I don't like the fact that judges are anonymous either. But I invite your considered response up in the "Edge" section to the astute topic raised about exactly HOW cheating is going on. Saying "Irina is being held up" doesn't explain in enough detail for me exactly how the cheating is really being executed. I want to hear some REAL agent 006.0 theories.

The basic precept in cheating is that whoever commits it tries to do the deed as discretely as possible and without getting caught, but still gets the desired results. If this were a situation where anyone could explain to you how each judge is doing it step-by-step, then this request for some "REAL agent 006.0 theories" would not fly, as no one here would be worried about what's going on, no one here would be suspecting that there's anything fishy going on, and no one would be making any accusations at all, because the crime would have already been officially detailed out there, the ISU would have (presumably) already acted on it, and all this discussion would be moot.

Ha ha ha, yes, with skaters of the quality of Sasha (didn't someone call her the 'queen of falls' or something -- to which I added my own title for her: PFS), Michelle is a virtual lock for US Nats. If you get to be a US champ for falling each time you compete, then Sasha should have had the title years ago!

Ha ha ha ha, the last laugh will be when Irina wins the OGM. If you think that Kwan is a virtual lock for US Nats, same goes for Irina and the Olympics. "If you get to be a US champ for falling each time you compete, then Sasha should have the title years ago." Same goes for Kwan and the OGM.

Oh, Irina's already a lock for the OGM, so she can start laughing now. As for US Nats, unless Sasha skates a clean program FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER in the history of this competition, or unless she can do BIellman after Biellman after Biellman, it's only Michelle Kwan's to lose.;)

My Opinion

I don't think anything is a given as far as Nationals or the Olympics are concerned. Sasha can beat Michelle at Nationals, and irina is not invincible, even in the eyes of the judges. Irina ALWAYS scores high in the SP but that doesn't mean that Sasha and Michelle can't be close enough to beat her in the LP, where Irina sometimes has problems. I really do believe that the winner of the OGM will deserve to win it. Irina is not an artistic hack. She has some skills and energy when she skates that others don't have. She is always enjoyable to watch. She is not a snore or a refrigerator break.

Exactly. How many judges expected to be voting for Sarah to take the gold but that's what happened.

Have you looked at the scores for MK and SC at the last few Nationals? Michelle has won but not by huge scores and didn't Sarah also beat Sasha three years ago at Nats to place second? People are not saying Irina should not be winning they are questioning the margin by which she is winning. Irina is a terrific athlete, huge jumps and fast as hell, but she pumps like crazy and overuses the Beillmann and that should affect some of her PCS scores especially the choreography marks. IMHO. Rgirl you were a dancer. Irina's posture would not go over well in the dance world, would it? Or would it?

Ok I concede a 70 for Irina in the short seems very high, and a bit hard to believe, but I hope to see the performance and reserve judgement until then. It does seem a bit surreal though. Mao Asoda I believe after seeing her last year in juniors, at her best, is very close to any of the top senior women now, and that is without even knowing possable/likely improvements over the summer, and to have her have skated exceptional in the short according to reports and be 8 points behind is a bit of a surprise.

Oh, but Kwan didn't fall in 1998 so you can't compare that to Sasha. And I don't know what "last laugh" there will be. Irina still has to skate to win. And she may be peaking too early. Then again she may not. Who knows? All I know is that I don't like the biellmanns in a program every 6 seconds and that's a yawn. I like Irina fine. And I think she and her team have done what they needed to do. I also hope that what I think is going on isn't really going on. But hey, whatever.

IMO, Irina's posture would go over very well in pretty much any style of theatrical dance except flamenco, where you need a strong arch in the spine. True, Irina's legs are not built for a style such as ballet, but that's the way her bones are shaped; there's nothing she can do about it. But someone being bow-legged is not the same as having poor posture.

Irina would make an especially good modern dancer in the Humphrey-Limon technique. That technique emphasizes full range of motion in the upper body using a "fall and recover" method. You move the body as far off center as possible and just before you fall, you recover your center. This approach is the impetus for all movement in Humphrey-Limon choroeography and the many choreographers trained in that technique. You give into gravity and dance "into the floor" in this kind of dance, as opposed to ballet in which everything is antigravity and being light on the floor.

Of course there are many different styles of modern dance, some close to ballet due to the emphasis on line, others as much meditation as dance. Also, over the past 25-30 years, ballet technique has incorporated many principles from various modern techniques and vice versa. Especially in New York, the top dancers, whether ballet or modern, could probably, after a period of adjustment training, perform professionally in either discipline.

Anyway, a lot of people talk about Irina being round-shouldered, which I don't see at all. As I've said before, she doesn't have the naturally arched spine of skaters such as Sasha Cohen or Dorothy Hamill, but Irina is able to move her upper body with more range of motion in more planes of motion than Cohen or Hamill. (Talking about Hamill at her peak.)

Another complaint I read about Irina is that she pumps her back while she back strokes. True, when she was younger, Irina did have a bad pumping habit. My guess, without checking my tapes, is that Irina probably did this from about 1996 until about 2001. But over the last 4-5 years, I've found her stroking to be an excellent example of the Russian style, which tends to be with the body bent farther forward from the hips than US or Canadian skaters. When Irina does pump, it's when she's tired or tight.

Also, there's a biomechanical and kinesiological reason for bending far forward. The farther forward the body bends, the more the gluteal and hamstring muscles are stretched. The more a muscle is stretched, the stronger it can contract from that stretched position. So by using that forward position, the skater gets more power in his/her stroking.

As for flailing arms, from about age 16 to 21, I think Irina tended to overuse her arms in an overly elaborate way. Since then, her choreography has been toned down and usually tones down from the start of the season to the end in terms of extraneous arm movements.

I say Irina is especially expressive with her upper body because she doesn't just keep her spine straight as if held up by a rod or arch it for Beillman's and laybacks. She uses her upper body fully in all directions to express various feelings. She also moves with what dancers call "breath," which just means that the movement looks as if it's breathing rather than just moving through space. The only other lady competing currently who does this as well as Irina that I've seen is Joannie Rochette and man, I love it.

Hope that answers your question, Yelyoh--thanks for asking, BTW.

Now for my really important question: Does anybody have download links to Irina's SP other than the one Kwanford Wife provided? (Thanks, KW; it's just my stupid computer that won't download that link without error for some reason.) I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Rgirl

Hi RGirl...

Interesting post with explanations as always. I enjoy reading what you write!!

There are numerous copies of the COC events (and the other events as well) at http://fsvids.9.forumer.com/ You have to register in order to get access to the current season events, but it's free and to me anyway, I love it!!

I'll be interested in your further comments after you see her programs.

Soooo many posts about Irina. Finally, she is getting the attention in this forum she deserves. Far too much talk about SC and MK, imo.

Irina has the points to win and to win it is all about the points. From my view, Irina has been a very cautious skater after her fling in Nagano, and after her flubs in in SLC. She became more intent on being a better competitor and despite her seasons of poor health was able to make a remarkable comeback. There won't be any more flings in Torino or flubs either. She's going for her third try, and she means business.

One thing she has learned that lyrical skaters are beatable with high level technical. Both Lipinski and Hughes showed that and Irina noticed.

She seems to be a nice lady. Seldom do we hear any gossip about her. She's kind of quiet. There is rumor that her interviews in English and Russian are two different Irinas. So what? Who cares even if that is true. She's a determined skater in the vane of Heiss and Lipinski.

The closest competitor to her is Sasha Cohen. A very talented American skater with many of the attributes that Irina has, but not all. Irina has a very calculated program which on paper is, imo, the best. I'm even saying this without seeing her yet this new season.

IMHO, a clean Irina is unbeatable unless something shows up in the GPs that is genuinely something I haven't seen before.

That maybe Alissa if she gets to the Olys. She could keep the Ladies teenagers the best shot at an Olys.

But all this is too soon. Let's see how everyone fares in the GPs.

Hey Doggygirl,
Oh, us Xgirls have to stick together. Thanks for your kind words and also for the link. Unfortunately, that link took me to "you send it" but for some reason, fortunately, that way at least the file downloaded. Unfortunately, I have an iBook (OS X) and even though I have Microsoft Office 2004, the file wouldn't play as a video. It tried to turn into a spreadsheet.

I've downloaded other video files that work just fine. WHY! WHY! WHY! WHY can't I download Irina's SP to video on my iBook, OS X?!

Is there anybody with a Mac who can help me? I'd appreciate it.

BTW, DG, earlier you asked why Sasha would attempt such a lame Beillman, referring to what I call her "Blahman" at Campbell's. She was behind the music, probably because she messed up her jump sequence and wasn't spinning as fast as she had been in practice. So, from what I saw, she didn't have time to get her free leg up over her head, spin, and then get it back down in time to end with the music.

However, I too think Cohen could come up with something snazzier than a Beillman to end her program, especially when she is being compared to Czisny and Slutskaya. With so many skaters doing Beillmans, Sasha could really distinguish herself with a different final spin that still packs a wallop. Unfortuntely, I'm afraid she'll probably stick with the Beillman. I just hope she doesn't end up behind the music again and doing another Blahman.

Rgirl

Rgirl- I used to have a Mac, so I think I can help you out. But before I do that, I need to know the format of the file you're trying to play. If it's a Windows Media file just do what the poster above says.

Love the "Blahman" description!! Of all skaters out there, I truly think Sasha is among the LEAST of the "Biellmann Needy." Timing of the 3/3 SEQ or not (Campbell's), I hope she has already dumped it. And I hope you figure out how to get situated for on-line coverage, or "shortly after" coverage with your Mac. If my hubby could help, I'd ask him to. But unfortunately, we don't follow the Mac stuff. :(

I think they are .asf files, but WMP is playing them for me. I don't remember adding in any codecs or downloading any extras.

Boogars! Man, I am an idiot! I downloaded Windows Media Player and Irina's COC SP still wouldn't play--Microsoft Office Excel kept trying to open it as a spreadsheet--so idiot me trashed my most recent Irina COC SP and even bigger idiot me emptied the trash. (Most things I can get back out of emptied trash, but probably because this was a downloaded file, no deal.) So I go back to You Send It to download Irina COC SP and the 7-day time period had expired. Aargh!

I think something is trying to tell me I've spent enough time on this and I should wait till it's on TV--and it dang well better be!

Thanks, of course, for all your help Hockeyfan, Red Dog, and Doggygirl. BTW, I think it was an .exl file.

Rgirl,

I just saw your post now. I also have an iBook. Sounds like your using IE as your browser. I had the same problem. You need to use Safari as your browser for the (I assume your talking about) Skating Videos website. You won't have this problem with the file being downloaded as an excel file. It will download as a .wmv file (even if it is an .asp file). So, try it and let me know if it works for you.
