Lutai arrested for car theft

Well, he had his whole life ahead of him and he threw it away, his skating career and everything, it's both stupid and reckless. It pisses me off that he did that -- with so many people out there that would do anything for a second chance. It's such a bloody waste, still, I hope he gets a second chance -- but will life grant it?

I mean, he could have ruined someone elses life too, you know, with him driving drunk and all. He should be thankful that nothing truly bad happened.

I believe that there is maybe a misunderstanding in the whole thing. But in order to excuse Andrei, this is the worst comment and the fact that they put it on media. Not the fact that Mishin might have yelled, was angry or whatever. That could be very much real for every coach. But the fact that the poor boy went to drink because of his coach who might have yelled is at least ridiculous. It insults Andrei, supposed athletes of this level have been facing numerus failures, fights with the coach to start drinking because of that and even if it is real, insults Mishin that looks like a monster who sent him to alcoholism,and the resume is what? That every time we will face a difficulty, a fight, a failure and someone will upset us maaaaaaybe we will drink to face it?

In a way it would be worse if he wasn't blind drunk because it means that in a (relatively) sober state of mind he decided to steal a car....

In any event, an hour is plenty of time for a young lad who doesn't ordinarily drink to be extremely intoxicated especially if he just started drinking spirits as opposed to beer.

How unfortunate. Once again, this proves that figure skaters are just people with flaws like everyone else in society. Some are honest, some not---some have good sense and some are clueless.

This error in judgement will cost him big time. How very sad to see someone so young mess up his future. Hope after this experience he wises up and decides to take the high road in the future.

So sad to hear about this. I really liked his funky approach to skating. I hope this works itself out so he can get back on track with his life.

This article gave me the impression that quite possibly Andrey thought the car belonged to one of the girls who asked him to drive them. I definitely think we need to hear more before we jump to any conclusions. Poor Andrey; first his skates do not arrive on time, and now this.
 
After reading this article, I looked down at the comments section. Here a few funny comments from the cbc.ca article:

Yeah, According to the local news I was watching they have dropped the car theft charges but the charges of his drunk driving are still up pending another hearing. There is also talk that someone may have spiked his drink according to the defense attorney. The hearing is scheduled for tomorrow (today) and if the other charges are dropped, he will be able to return to Russia.

BTW, They shown him with his prison clothes, I feel bad for you Andrei. Good luck

I thought the same thing too. It's really weird for someone to steal a car if they were going to be on a plane back home the very next day.

Lutai doesn't seem to be getting a chance to say anything at all. Right now, it's all 'the attorney says', 'the police says'...
 
Since Lutai had to have a bobsled coach interpret for him, it's not surprising that the press has not been able to get to him for quotes. And a good thing that is!

Yeah, the car thing is really the big charge here. Still want to hear his side of the story but that will have to wait till the hearing.

Was he drunk? or is that being used to explain the reason for the car theft?

Did the car belong to the family of one of the female admirerers? and the father of the admirerers reported his vehicle was missing?

Car theft is a serious felony. but these charges could be dropped, hopefully.

The less Lutai says right now the better off he will be.
His attorney will do his talking and has probably advised Lutai not to say a word. As Doris pointed out he apparently does not speak much English so this should not be a cause for concern.

It looks like this may turn out alot better than what was initially reported.
He may even be able to return home in a couple of days and resume training.

Yikes, Andrei, what were you thinking? :no: I hope he learns a valuable lesson from this and is able to turn his life around . . . so sad. :cry:

But I am glad to see that this is getting resolved quickly. It's also nice to see that people are stepping up to help him like the bobsled coach. It's my understanding that he is Russian but it an American bobsled coach. But I could be wrong!
 
Poor Andre, and all that publicity. What do those letters mean on the prison garb? I can't figure them out for anything in English.
