P.S. maybe I'm a "naive", but I want to believe, that and the "public pressure" (our comments on this forum) had a positive impact on this decision of the U.S. Court:thumbsup:

well a coworker of mine's sister is sitting in jail for the next 30-45 days because she can't make bail on a DUI charge... she'll miss holidays because of it. boo-hoo. she's not gone to court yet, she was picked up by the cops. her brother isn't screaming injustice (she is, but most people in trouble DO cry out that it's somehow unfair...)
I don't feel sorry for those who choose to be reckless.

If that's her first DUI, she needs a better lawyer. If not, then I understand why she's sitting in jail. The courts take a dim view of DUI repeaters.

Always glad to be of service.
Now I hope all of you who were so quick to prejudge this situation will sit back and realize a couple of things happened here.
1. Lutai had a good lawyer
2. They probably released Lutai from custody without bail
3. The owner of the garage/car did not press charges
4. A deal was worked out much faster than is typical for our justice system.
5, The court showed good faith towards Lutai by agreeing to let him leave the country and to settle this at a later date.
All things considered I think this unfortunate incident illustrates our justice system is pretty fair and compassionate.
Ultimately it is clear Lutai was treated as if he was innocent and not guilty.
If not, he would still be sitting in jail.

Well, now that young Mr. Lutai is safely back home, we should look on the positive side. First, Andrei will have a more interesting story to tell about his trip to the U.S. than just, I competed at Skate America and didn't do so well.
Second, maybe this will turn into an international incident, with Russia retaliating against U.S. athletes, President Obama threatening to boycott the 2014 Olympics, and politicians banging their shoes on the table in outrage That would be the best thing for figure skating since Tonya and Nancy!

i hope your second assumption of this becoming a bigger incident is wrong. This would only happen,if Lutai was actually framed in the case with someone spiking his drink and car owner collaborating with the those girls lutai was that night. I personally hope he just got drunk and stole the car than rather than he being framed.
As for Russia retaliating, if it becomes an even bigger incident and US boycotting the games. i would think that will not happen; remember US with all the sponsors is finding it hard to win the Olympic Bid, and any boycotts will never help the course.

Acc to Russian media, Lutai is indeed back home, but he's not in Moscow, he's in his home town of Belgorod.

Andrei Lutai has been disqualified from all upcoming international and domestic competitions for almost one year (till Nov 15, 2010).

I care about Andrey. I think this was a very reasonable solution to the problem from the Russian end. Any time one of their athletes gets into trouble in another country, I believe they see that as an embarrassment. This way, Andrey gets to cool off while his case is being decided in the U.S., but he is still permitted to vie for an opportunity to represent Russia on the ice in the future. That seems equitable to me.
I feel that our State Department in the U.S. did its job, and thereby prevented further harm. Well done.
I am a fan of Russian skating in particular, although I am an American. My three favorite pair couples ever are all Russian. My favorite male skater ever is Russian. My favorite dance team ever is British. My favorite female skaters ever are mostly, but not all, from the U.S. I also have favorite figure skaters from Japan, Korea, Canada, France, and other countries. This is a small world now, and I believe we must all try to be friends. My favorite saying in U.S. history is "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately".
