I think I liked their American in Paris FD the most this quad and the Paso Doble SD from a few seasons back. Maddie looked so disappointed to be third. But maybe this will be great motivation for them as they did win the FD. But either way I must say we're really spoilt for choice with respect to ice dance this season. Come winter Olympics we're going to be happy for the medalists but really gutted for three to five other pairs.

Their 'American in Paris' has the same 'feel' as their FD to Chopin. Both FD suited them to a T: the classic playfulness ... the jazzy style play up the best parts of their personality.

So bummed they won the FD for the second year in a row but were too far behind after the SD to move up. I hope their chance to participate in the team event isn't gone. :sad4:

Madi and Evan were wonderful at Nationals. Congratulations to them for winning the Free Dance and making the Olympic team. So happy they continue to improve their performances with each competition. So sad they were placed third. I think they should have taken the gold.

It was heartbreaking to see the pain in Madi's eyes when the placements came up. :sad4:

They have been pretty obviously a couple for awhile now, but they didn't officially say anything about it until December.

Evan was elected Team Captain for the Olympic figure skating team today per US Figure Skating:

EVAN BATES ELECTED TEAM CAPTAIN OF 2018 U.S. OLYMPIC FIGURE SKATING TEAM

(1/25/18) - U.S. Figure Skating announced today the selection of Evan Bates as team captain of the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.

Bates was elected by vote of his teammates.

“It’s an honor to serve as captain for this talented and ambitious group of athletes,” Bates said. “Together as Team USA we will represent our country with pride and bring home as many medals as we possibly can.”

This Olympic Winter Games will mark Bates’ third, and his second with partner Madison Chock. The duo recently finished third at the 2018 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

The Olympic Games are set for Feb. 9-25.

There has been some really great PR for Madi & Evan leading up to and during the Olympics! I don't see this posted but highly recommend listening to this ten minute interview they did with NPR in Michigan. Among other things, Evan says he told Madi he loved her and wanted to spend his life with her *before* they started dating. Bold, but then I'm sure he had a pretty good idea she would be receptive, haha. They also talk about things they do off the ice.

I wonder if this romantic drama caused some of their problems last year. When something major changes in a partnership, things may get out of kilter. More guilt over mistakes, perhaps?

But when "Imagine" was highlighted in the opening ceremony, they have to have been so stoked!

Definitely some drama there, as it seems Evan's overture to romance was telling Madi he loved her and couldn't imagine spending his life with anyone else. Most guys just ask a girl to the movies and maybe dinner at Chipotle after.

It made me wonder how long Evan had carried those feelings around inside himself, working up the courage to tell Madi how he felt. No wonder he couldn't concentrate on his twizzles.

AFAIR, wasn't Madi dating Deividas Stagniunas for a long time?...It has to have been tough for Evan if he was carrying a torch for a long time.

I suspected for a long time that he had feelings for her just by the way he looked at her and spoke about her. I'll never forget one interview a couple of years ago when they had to say what they liked most about each other, and Evan said Madi was "a joy to be around." His face just lit up when he talked about her.

I think when they did the Beyonce exhibition it inspired him to not hold it in any longer. :luv17:
