Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani

Here is the Shibs' newest vlog. This one is all about their week in Switzerland with Stephane Lambiel right after Worlds:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz8p4S9f47s

In their livestream, they said they were able to piece some footage from their phones and other devices for this vlog. Hopefully, there will be more vlogs coming up despite their lost camera.

I like the direction of this one as it comes off like a stream of consciousness.

It looks so professional, I wonder if Alex studied something related. I think that reflects that they are perfectionists. You compare their videos with the videos of TSL, there is no comparison, Maia and Alex are in a whole different league.

Here's a YouTube link to Latin Ballroom dancer Jenna Johnson short clips that she posted on Instagram of her working with the Shibs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCtGcLs2ctQ

You can hear some music in the background but I don't know if it's their music or not.

I love that position she's in during her and Alex's stationary lift. I wonder if Maia can replicate it.

first things first - LOVE Your avatar, VietgrlTerifa!!!, it's so 'pure', and I love the simplicity of it, the real, raw beauty is shining through it!

and YASSSS to Jenna Johnson working with Maia and Alex!!!WOOOT:cheer:

one of my favourite Ballroom dancers ever in SYTYCD history, and I love her also in DWTS. I trust that collaboration due to Jenna's modern approach and quality she puts in her every work. From what I saw from her, I see a lot of care and stress put not only of dance being effective (tricks etc.), but mostly being sharp, musical, well-constructed and 'complete' in terms of cohesion (movement to music, etc.). Shibutanis' crispness of movement and sublime technique sure will be an excellent match to Jenna's ideas, energy and quality, I have no doubt.

And I do wish Maia would have an emerald green dress for SD, the idea just stuck in my mind and can't get from there:love:

I agree. For me, 'being professional' is one of first things coming to my mind thinking of Maia and Alex - there's that work ethic, seriousness of being athletes, representing themselves, country and discipline in general. All laced with so much elegance, dignity and respect. It really seems like everything they do, they want to do it the best way - for themselves, for their 'brand', but also for people, it really shows through their videos, interviews. I know that for some they come across reserved, cool and not expressive people, but real feelings and care do not have to be say aloud or express vividly to be there and felt by others, that's my experience. Personally, I adore this calmness, purity around them, their skating, and I love the approach I receive from them to make their basis, pristine, sharp technique, crispness and unity of movement as a departure point, a canvas for their skating where they can express themselves how they want to do it.

I think the green color is not very popular in figure skating. I always wished that Mao would wear a green dress since I watched the movie Atonement, I did not like the movie :noshake:, but I loved the green dress that Keira wore http://imgur.com/a/awMdO

I think green is one of those colors that is really hard to look great in if you don't have the perfect compliment of hair color, skin tone, and eye color. Add the contrast to the ice and I think it magnifies any mismatch.

I do think that a dress like what's in the link would look beautiful on Maia if it were in a bold red, purple, or blue color.

I don´t like purpule very much, but I would love she wear a red dress, but she loves wear black, so I would not be surprised if she used black or blue again. Anyway, she looks fabulous in black https://www.instagram.com/p/BVlR3wBlNsL/?taken-by=maiashibutani, she got 100,000 followers on instagram

Kiera's dress:love:, and yes - the problem with green in general for me is that it is quite difficult to match the shade with your complexion and beauty type...It's quite easy to miss the mark with choosing too bright green or too 'muddy' green. I do think that Maia would look amazing with emerald shade, with sequined/slightly shiny structure of material, or with fringe texture (for example I love Jenna Johnson's SYTYCD audition dress when she auditioned herself - black one with fringe layers:love:). I think that a mix of emerald green and gold would look fantastic on Maia, too, e.g. fringe-y dress in emerald green with gold underside - it would look like a bomb in movement! Apologies for dress rambling, but Maia's beauty is very 'pure' and inspiring for me, she rocks both pastel and deep shades in my opinion. And yes - black is her colour too!

As for Mao - oh yes, she looked amazing in bold-coloured dresses, I just love this magenta SP dress with open back or red SP dress from last season:love:

ETA - and chapis - congratulations on 3.000 posts mark!!!:hb::cheer:, always a pleasure to read your posts!

Wow. Impressive for Maia to attain that "100k" follower threshold on Instagram.

Comments on her posts suggest fans and followers include people from people all over the world. Also, a healthy contingent of other "verified" types (celebs, etc.) consistently send their love for her quality posts.

Amongst currently active ice dancers, Maia is by far at the top of the list. Tessa seems closest at 68k.

100k Queen Maia

To be honest, I was surprised that she just reached 100k! I thought it was already over 100k since a long time ago. Cheers to Maia and Alex for keeping their social media alive, God knows the once a day post is not enough to keep me satisfied. Me want more of them Shibs <3

Maia is definitely very popular for a figure skater. As for Tessa, you also have to consider that she started her Instagram account later than Maia (Tessa's first post was in August 2014, but Maia's - in May 2012). I think, overall, their popularity is about the same. Tessa is an Olympic champion, after all, and also went more "public" after the 2013/2014 season - opened accounts in social media, took part in some campaigns, made her own jewelry line etc. + her and Scott's return was quite noticeable at least in the figure skating world.

Random comment: I was in a cafe yesterday with my sister and her boyfriend, there was music and suddenly in the place I heard the song Paradise, they started to sing it very excited and I was like "Do you know that song?", they looked at me as if I was a weirdo and could not believe when I told them that I did not know that song before Maia and Alex announced it . I hope they like Shibs program.

I remember what a big deal it was for me when Tessa started utilizing her Instagram account on a regular basis. I remember being surprised that it took her so long to do so. Same with Madison Chock and Evan Bates actually. They always posted on Instagram, but it looks like they recently signed up with an agent and took it up a notch.

I seriously hope I like it too,.

Oh, that rink is in my area and very familiar to me from my son's hockey days! What exactly is a monitoring session and why would they have had to come to MD for it?

Presumably because whoever they wanted to show their programs to was already there for the competition (Chesapeake Open). I am not sure how monitoring sessions work, I thought it was like in Russia but closed to public but apparently it is different. They are now in Utah (SLC), I guess getting to someone else to show their programs

Yes, there seems to be USFSA monitoring sessions that are held in conjunction with club competitions.

Thanks for your replies, Chapis and Mrs P! LOL, I happen to be in SoCal now visiting family in Orange County, and we were just talking about Vidcon as we drove by Anaheim today (regretting not having planned ahead to get tickets). The chances that the Shibs will be flying back east on United out of John Wayne airport Sat late morning are probably nil, but I'll keep an eye out for them just in case. Anyway, can't wait to see their new programs!
