Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani

My post was in response to naz, whose post did not seemed to be intended as a joke.

nope, it was not a joke :)

I do agree that there really is no solid proof of them being named after the Russian team. Nevertheless, it would be an interesting fact.

P.S. Sorry, that was said during their NHK FD, not GPF.

Google is amazing. Dig little further. Learn a lot. Their mother seems to go by her maiden name, Naomi Uyemura. She was born in Japan but grew up in the US. She was quite a piano prodigy, competing at the Chopin competition at 14 or 15. She also won the piano competition at the prestigious Aspen Music Festival.

Their father, Chris, has had quite a few careers (LinkedIn). Growing up, he performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center as a flutist. At Harvard he was the assistant conductor of the orchestra. He also played the piano, but lost to Naomi in the Harvard competition. Chris has medical and business degrees from Harvard and Columbia, and has worked at some elite centers and companies throughout careers first in medicine (SloanKettering Cancer Center) and then in finance (JPMorgan).

Regardless of their parents impressive accomplishments, I'm a fan of Maia and Alex for being the kind of people they are on and of the ice. They are so generous with fans, super dedicated to causes they support and at the end of the day, just seem like really good kids.

Couldn't be prouder to have them as US champions and ambassadors for the sport of figure skating.

Wow, I wonder if Maia and Alex play an instrument.

If you look at Chris Shibutani's resume, at the bottom, he states under "Personal Life/interests"; "Rooting for daughter and son Maia and Alex Shibutani, Ice Dance partners, #5 in the World, Represented the United States in the Winter Olympics inSochi, Russia."

I thought it was kind of cool he made a point to mention them.

Also Alex looks like dad!

Came across an enjoyably candid-without-being-mean blog which had commentary about Maia and Alex's Nationals win which resonated with my own views.

http://thefinersports.sportsblog.co...ed-from-2016-us-figure-skating-nationals.html

"Perhaps the only program more perfect than Gold's free skate was Maia and Alex Shibutani's free dance. That's partially because the baseline goal of ice dance is perfection: one stumble or bobble, a split second of lost synchronicity or missed rhythm, and you're down two levels and out of the running. (If you're wondering what happened to 2015 Champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates, that's a pretty good summary.)

The Shibutanis were beyond perfect from a technical standpoint, with maximum levels on every element, plus high positive grades of execution. They earned 11.43 points for their diagonal step sequence, roughly what Gracie Gold earned for her triple lutz-triple toe loop, and more than Adam Rippon got for either of his triple axels. If ice dance doesn't look that hard, keep that point comparison in mind. But like this year's other National Champions, the Shibutanis excelled not only in their technical execution, but in their impact on the audience.

If their free dance doesn't move you, then you need to pack up your hipster robot self and find another sport to follow, because the whole point of figure skating is that it can make you cry and cheer at the same time.

I couldn't help but think of the Shibs while watching Coldplay's performance during the Superbowl half-time show.

Most reviews found them to be underwhelming compared to guests Beyonce and Bruno Mars. They did a little bit of "Fix You" and I almost wish there was a way for the Shibs to come out and do their twizzles or something to liven it up, LOL.

That would have been cool - although anything would have liven up Coldplay's performance last night.

That would have been TERRIFIC if the Shibs were featured with Cold Play. Wonder if Cold Play would ever do one of those skating/music show? Probably not.... too big and too expensive...Cold Play, that is... Can't wait to see the Shibs at 4CC and Worlds!

The moment 'Fix You' started playing, my mom and I turned to look at each other and said 'Shibs!' at the same time. We couldn't help it and we had to watch their FD at Nationals again after them game.

This was a cool post by Maia to her Instagram that both the NBC Olympic and Team USA re-posted.
Maia commented that she "made Alex stand on a chair" after she arranged the elements for the picture. "#bossysister #nicebro"

... No wonder the Shibs have such excellent blade and edge work.

Now that I know that it was Janet Lynn's coach, Slavka Kohout, who was their developmental coach. I was wondering who instilled that in them because that really sets them apart, and I am sure that was the first thing people took notice of as they were climbing through the rankings as young kids, and even now. All the comparisons to Yuka Sato due to their soft knees and excellent basics (I know Yuka like many Japanese skaters of her generation were in love with Janet Lynn) make sense now. We need to thank Kohout for instilling that attention to fundamentals to Alex and Maia, and it's great that they and their parents understood the importance of that ....

She will be attending Worlds in Boston.

Does Coldplay even know about the Shibs' FD? Do we know whether they have seen it and/or commented on it?

Nice compliment for Maia and Alex from Michael Parsons:

If you were senior skaters, who would you want to try to skate with and why?

Michael: If we could train with any senior team, we would train with the Shibutanis. They are another brother/sister team who have been extremely successful and we really respect them for their skating and their personalities.

it is very sweet but Marina could :hpull::whack::gaah: having two top brother-sister teams

Not assuming that Michael is seriously saying that the Parsons are looking to move to Team Zoueva.
And I am no cheerleader for Marina.

But within her years of coaching the Shibs, she coached the Reed sibs and the Hasegawa sibs as well.
So if the Parsons really do get serious about Marina, would not seem like an unthinkable move to me. (She has juggled more than one top U.S. couple at a time too, of course.)

Yes, I know, she had the Maekawas (mexican team) too, but you know, Shibs and The Parson are in another level, anyway I guess Scali is the difference now.
