Maia and Alex on the Instagram account https://www.instagram.com/p/BfRL6zIjIIh/?taken-by=instagram, big deal, almost 5 millions of views and 5,000 comments.

instagram: For American ice dancers Maia and Alex Shibutani (@shibsibs), their family bond is their greatest strength. “Skating with a sibling is unique,” says 23-year-old Maia (@maiashibutani). “But we’ve always gotten along well. Alex is an awesome big brother and now that we’re on the same team, we treat each other like equals. It’s a huge strength for us to know that we support each other unconditionally.”
Competing in their second Winter Olympics, in #Pyeongchang2018, Maia and Alex are no strangers to success in ice dancing, a ballroom dancing-influenced form of figure skating: They are three-time world medalists and two-time U.S. champions in their sport. And earlier this week, they won bronze in the team figure skating event. But being Olympic athletes — together — is their greatest triumph. “Our bond extends beyond our skating together as a team,” says 26-year-old Alex (@alexshibutani). “We’ll be best friends for the rest of our lives.” 🇺🇸

Some color from a credentialed journalist contact, who has been able to watch the figure skating practices at the Games. Almost half of the practices are held in a basement practice rink. Fans cannot buy tickets and even family are not able to attend.

He was struck that since they returned to the Olympic arenas on Thursday, Maia and Alex appear to be carrying themselves with a noteworthy level of confidence. He described their skating as having a "confident joyful energy. They truly look like they are enjoying attacking every moment" Their run throughs have been very strong and they are "skating and performing with consistency, command and conviction"

Glad to hear that they are thriving amidst the intensity of the Olympic environment.

Nice comment from Sandra Bezic :luv17:: The Shibutani’s skating technique is Patrick’s dance equivalent. Their Free Dance performance was pure, honest and the legacy of a lifetime of family commitment. They and Virtue and Moir were in a ‘glide’ class of their own. How could they be close to anyone else’s points?

GOOD LUCK MAIA AND ALEX, YOU CAN DO IT!!!! :agree2: :hap10::hap10::hap10:

I'm mainly worried about the calling. I think if the Shibs get their levels and have a high TES, then I would feel a lot safer. However, whatever happens, the fact that the Shibs are having such a wonderful Olympics and look as if they already struck gold here and are skating even better in practices than they had last week has already been such a wonderful experience. I just hope that they get a fair shake here and that they will cap off their Olympics with a result that makes them truly happy.

arugh if it wasn't for those perfect canadians the shibs would have remained at the top, tsk. :noshake: i'm beginning to think they are the shibs' new chock/bates. this isn't all a bad thing, really, because that means more rivalry. i'm probably not alone in my desire for the canadian couple to be defeated by them, they want that as well for sure!

i also loved it when the female commentator called them "the king and queen of twizzles", don't be afraid to say it twice darling! :yahoo:

:rolleye: at these scores... honestly, I would've had Maia and Alex slightly above P/C for tonight's performances. Oh well. Fingers crossed Maia and Alex can pull it off in the free and get onto that podium!

I don’t know about y’all but I’m just very upset at these judges that lowball Shibs. I’m tired, so tired of judges throwing them aside. They work so, so hard for their sake and the sake of the sport and it’s unappreciated by the ISU. It would have been beautiful and meaningful if they medaled because they would have become the first team of Asian descent to stand on the ID Olympic podium in Asia, like you all are very aware. I think that is very unlikely to happen now, sadly.

Regardless of what happens, the Shibutanis are iconic and their legacy will transcend. #ShibSquad

Let's look at the positive. They were the only team outside the top 2 to receive a 10.00 and that was from the Ukrainian judge of all people AND they were in the penultimate group. They enjoyed a GOE advantage of 1.05 and a PCS advantage of 0.68 over H/D in the SD. It was actually American Sharon Rogers who, with the Turkish judge, gave H/D the win here because they had H/D ahead by more than 3 points. The Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Ukrainian judges had the Shibs higher than H/D. Three judges that put H/D higher only had them higher by about a point which is pretty amazing considering H/D had about 1.70 advantage in base value. Four the judges will change and we will have to see how they enjoy the FDs and what the callers will do. I think if the Shibs keep it really close in base value tomorrow to H/D in the FD, they have a huge shot of winning the bronze.

Also, whatever happens tomorrow, we know that the Shibs gave the best performance of that SD that they had all year, had an excellent team event with a FD performance they are so proud of, and received a huge ovation from the crowd in the TE and tonight. They are absolutely enjoying this Olympic experience and are coming away with such fanfare, new followers, much more attention, and have become bigger than the small figure skating fandom. Maia and Alex have gained about 100K new Instagram followers since the TE, an Instagram account post they were featured in received over 7 million views, and more people social media right now is talking about them than any other American team by far, which is not bad for a brother-sister ice dance team that did not win gold. They have an Olympic medal to boot. I will channel all of my energy to having them win another medal tomorrow night, but I'd say this has been such a great Olympics for Alex and Maia.

Remember where Shib fans were four years ago? Heck even two and a half to three years ago? We were afraid they'd be relegated to US no. 2 forever or even be relegated down to no. 3 or left off the Pyeongchang team. The judges wouldn't give them the time of day. Look at where they are now. They've come such a long way and they have done nothing but conducted themselves with dignity, class, and with enough personality and charm to attract people from all around the world. They are simply amazing.

You made be cry in my lecture, this is so well said. Crossing all my fingers and toes for them tomorrow, but whatever happens the most important thing is that they did the best they could and they know that we are all behind them :)

I am so happy with their performance, I just hope they will have a similar or better FD and judges will do whatever they want, as usual, and although with the skating community their SD had better reception, I think that their FD will have better acceptance with the general public. By the way, I don´t know if Dobre post here but Shibs fans should read her comment about the FD in FSU https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...ce-fans-2017-2018.101994/page-86#post-5301855. And Maia and Alex are fine, I watched their Instagram live after the SD and they look very relaxed and satisfied with their performance.

They should have been sitting in 2nd place or at least 3rd. Why are the judges marking them down. Commentators on Eurosport said H|D had no emotion or sizzle yet the got SB.

Despite score and technical calls, they still delivered one of top 3 performances in my opinion. It's a strange thing to see this dance scored at this kind of range, looking at actual performance and what other teams produced, but then seeing top 2 performances looked like AND then scored, it no longer makes any sense and is not worthy any more nerves.

People LOVED them. One of the loudest cheers and applause afterwards. Their dance was about pure joy of festivity, celebration of great music, their connection and everything they want to give to the audience. They sure for me brought brightness, youthfulness, this vibrant, colourful vibe of Latin music, but served in such polished, elegant way of ballroom-like convention. Those twizzles should go viral - no one, no other team does them in a way they do it: amazing tempo, coverage, timing, polish...And they really managed to move that music, enjoy the moment, not only to focus on execution for me. The performance exuded dynamism, energy and great sense of commitment by both of them in equal measure, which was not so common from top teams today. And I do not wonder why one of judges gave them perfect 10.00 for 'Performance' - that is what judging components like 'Performance' or 'Interpretation'/'Composition' should be like: ding the team for levels, if they are making some mistakes, but if they are still excelling in the performance area as a whole, give them credit for it. They have also a superbly constructed/arranged program comparing to many top teams, with right balance between technical difficulty and easiness in movement/expression. I personally love the natural abandon and reflection of the music portrayed by them - it creates very 'honest' and relatable image, without unnecessary 'story' put behind it.

As for FD - honestly, I think the order is good for them, they just have to fully go for it and watch execution in terms of levels, upping the ante achieved at TE would be best thing to do. They made a stunning impression during TE with that FD - it has uniting factor and right dose of realness mixed with vibrancy/dynamic of the song and message. They have come that far no without reason - and they were able to achieve that also because of faith put it them by more and more people each time. If they are feeling confident and ready before FD, I'm with them. And I'll stand for that FD regardless of judging and results which proved its 'value' yet again today, especially coming to PCS. I'm counting for them to make a special moment for themselves and carry the energy onto the audience, they have all needed experience and skills to do this. They'll will fight - as they proved so many times in past 3 years; they did not risk things without purpose.

It seems that Tanith was very complimentary with the Shibs this time

There is very little difference with the score of Hubbell and Donohue (0.02 It is nothing). I'm sure they will close the gap. But honestly since the team event, I think they are being underscored :palmf:. I was already suprised when the panel give them 75.46 for their SD. They were definately the strongest on team USA and with their accomplishment they deserve more points and credits. I always liked their SD and have some doubts with their FD this season but I change my mind watching them performing it without mistakes during the team event. it was perfect ! love it :luv17: I hope the judges will be fair. I wish them luck :yahoo:
