Mao Asada news

She looked more mature and ethereal than last year, and I love her sp, I m so excited that she skated well, i have missed this Mao!Even the last year competitive programs didnt do her justice like her exhibitions!

I'm so happy for Mao! It couldn't happen to a more deserving athlete and person.
I'm so glad to see her season starting to turn around. That 3F really rocked!
Good luck, Mao, in the FS!

Thanks for linking to the video! What a pleasure to watch this. It had some small mistakes, but who cares! She did all her jumps, more or less, and the other elements were lovely. Her carriage and arm positions are still splendid. Go, Mao!

I agree, it's all a bit silly IMO. Sure the costume draws focus to her bubbies, but she's not revealing much skin. it's pretty tame.

Bubbies, hehe. But don't most skaters use illusion fabric anyway? So in a sense, skaters rarely show any skin regardless.

I'm so happy for Mao. I was so worried given her performance at the GP series, but it looks like she's going to do well in the free skate. :)

^^Mao takes my breath away, beautiful FS. I am so happy for her.
Thanks for the link.

So happy for Mao! Yay!!!!
She can still do much better, but this competition is the first sign that her skating is definitely now on an upward trajectory again. I especially love the smile on her face as she skates. It's great to see her enjoying skating again!

She takes my breath away, too, Demarinis5. How silken her movements are from one action to the next. And she did a triple axel in combination? Sheesh!

Whenever I see her skate, I'm always astounded that someone who jumps like that has a spiral position like that. And as Feraina points out, she can do even better. What a privilege it is to watch her skate.

By the way, kudos to Nobuo Sato for helping her so much this season. I think he and she are proving that the risk she took to rebuild her jumps will be worthwhile.

I think she did a 2axel in combination but that doesnt take anything away from her program, it was so nice to see it at last clean (or almost), it is really magical. I cant decide what to rewatch, her sp or lp:) Actually I m kind of feeling relief she had just one 3axel planned in lp (i hope it stays like this) , cause the 2 3axels were making her think a lot and she was skating very reserved, like with fear. But today she was great and her sp even more, her movements are so mature and refined, she is of few skaters I m watching from head to toe simultaneously. I m thrilled for Dai´s Lp also!

I guess Nationals really is Mao's miracle event. Haha.

Soooo glad to see her doing well after a difficult GP series.

Very happy for Miki that she is Japanese champion again after sticking it out and working so hard all of these years... Her jumps are exciting and raise the bar. I also think her camel spin shows off how much she has worked on her stretch - it was nicer than Mao's this competition. This is the best Miki has done that program so far.

Mao is magical. Sooooooooo nice to see her on the ice and doing well. As soon as she started moving she transported me and I think her program this year shows off her lightness and grace so much better than last year's. So happy for her and she looked beautiful.

I just now watched Mao's Exhibition Skate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ht5OP_abusM

This rates as one of my all-time favorite programs of hers, in terms of beauty, eloquence, and sentimentality it put a catch in my throat and made my eyes misty. And also for some strange unknown reason it brought to mind the 1983 movie "Anna to the Infinite Power" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-SfFnYo_5k&playnext=1&list=PL634220C2A0E79F79&index=37). I'm pretty sure it's because of the music ~ so evocative, entrancing, powerful, soulful.

Every move Mao does is a work of art; she makes the simplest moves come alive with such beauty & awe, hard to describe. The closest most apt description I can think of would be to liken her to a white ribbon blowing in the wind...

p.s. Mao's always been balletic, but I see an even bigger improvement in this area now, her toes are pointed to the nth power, her back supple, and her arms are almost to the point of Oksana Baiul; the latter being the biggest compliment I've ever paid anyone in this area btw. :)

I agree; this program is really beautiful. I kind of wish they would have reworked it into a competitive program as it really does showcase Mao's strengths. Plus, I love the simple, white outfit on her--I really think less is more when it comes to figure skating outfits (don't really care for her new black/red outfit!).

Well, her new FS is in a similar spirit. I don't know why some people say she skated to her LP without much relation to the music at her National's, I actually find it quite musical. There were moments in the first half when she was obviously more focused on the jumps, but even then, she did pay attention to the little musical details in between elements, and then she was even better in the second half. I think she totally deserved a higher PCS than Miki, and not just a little bit higher...

That white dress is beautiful but wouldn't show up well against the ice in competition lighting -- it works a lot better in darker exhibition lighting. I like her violet FS dress, but I wish it had a little more illusion fabric and little less flowery, frilly ornamental details. It looks old fashioned somehow...

Thanks for the translation. Mr. Sato assessment of both Mao and Taka was very straightforward. He does not sugar coat anything. I like that.

Q. So it's been half a year since starting the process of correcting her jumps in June--
A. It was September.
Note: The interviewer asked this question because it was announced that Asada started reworking her jumps in June. For Sato, Asada began this process in September, when she became his student.

Well if this is the case, no wonder Mao was a hot mess at NHK. That competition was about a month after she "officially" started.

That said, is Sato saying her time with Akiko's coach doesn't count as rework?
