Mao Asada

I saw someone else making the same statement on youtube. If it is true, it could explain a few things. I hope she'll have this fix asap.
During her skate I feel like her boots would be torn anytime. I wonder why. To get used to new boots is not easy anyways, it can be hurt so maybe she used her old boots.

NBC showed her lutz in the free skate warm up and the edge looked much improved. Hopefully she will be able to show it at NHK!

Thanks to the poster Sylvia who found this compliment about Mao's SP program that the American competitive skater Grant Hochstein made in a report for IceNetwork.

I've never seen Mao skate in person and I was so impressed. There is such a wonderful and refined quality to her skating. She takes it to such a level that you just don't see in skating anymore. My favorite part of her program was the footwork sequence. She moved across the ice so fluidly with twizzles that even ice dancers would surely kill for.

can anyone translate what the russian commentators were saying about her?
thanks!

The Russian broadcasters on the video I saw said that Mao had a very elegant costume in her SP. They said that she executed a remarkable triple axel. Then, they mentioned that very few women have ever executed it successfully. One announcer said they thought her 3F / 3L was rotated to their eyes in real time, but the judges don't always give her credit for it. In the slow middle section, one announcer said how interesting it was to see the artistry of mature woman with a lot of talent (guessing on this word), while mentioning it was choreographed by Lori Nichol. They said Mao's triple lutz was absolutely rotated and even had the right edge. That is the way I hear it. Then, during her Biellmann spin before the step sequence, they said Mao had corrected a lot of mistakes from the past and that today she looked very strong. When she finished, they said, "Remarkable program and Remarkably executed. Welcome Back Mao." Then, one said that he seriously doubted that the world record would stand. While looking at the instant replay, they called her triple axel rotated. They did say they thought the back end of her 3F / 3L might possibly be slightly ur'd but that it shouldn't change the score much. They didn't say anything about the triple lutz on instant replay. After looking at instant replay but before seeing the scores, they said that if Mao had rotated her 3F / 3L, she would have broken the world record. It is my impression that they sounded surprised when they heard the scores, but they didn't say anything definite about it. The only things they said she could have improved was holding her positions a bit longer and her expression a bit more, though I thought these qualities were outstanding, but overall they said it was very, very good, a 1st class performance.

This is a beautiful HD copy of Mao's SP by the way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lSPnBevRcM

I have watched it many times and love it more and more.

I loved both 3As, especially the one in the FS. Mao is still in her own league (and will most likely always be :)) . I'm so excited for NHK!

Mao's FS in Cup of China reminded me of her wonderful FS at Sochi. I think I've heard that her Sochi FS got the all-time high score for a women's long program. Is that right? The skate was certainly good enough. BTW does anyone have a clip of that? Youtube has two but they're poor quality. Thank you.

Unfortunately, Mao's Sochi FS only gained around 142 points which is about 8 points shy of the world record. However, many people (including myself) feel as if it was underscored due to Mao skating in an earlier group and some other factors.

As for Youtube videos, it's difficult to find any because the Olympics channel (or something?) blocked most videos. I'll see if I can find anything though!

The Sochi FS videos are posted in the original post (page 1) - thanks to gotoschool and tulosai of course
Enjoy!

Also if you go to the japanese site niconico and search for Mao Asada, you can find her Sochi FS broadcast from different countries (BBC, CBC, NBC with Scott and Sandra, NBC live with Tara and Johnny, Russian with Tarasova, Chinese, Italian, etc.) I never get tired of watching them (even the Russian and Italian ones although I don't understand what they are saying).

Yes the SP is nearly impossible to find (at last on English speaking sites) but the LP is definitely out there!
