Mao Asada

I think it's a good decision. Lori was in Japan last week, so they may have polished programmes a lot.

I met Mao at a party last Sunday, and she was fine and cute as ever.
Good luck, Mao:cheer:

I think so too. So she can recovery from fatigue and will be able to prepare for the worlds.
I hoped Kanako could go to 4CC. My wish came true. Good luck Kanako, Rika and Satoko at 4CC :hap10:

Can anyone tell me in which starting group Mao will be in at worlds?
Her current world standing is 12th, but Kanako and Yulia are in front of her, who wont be at worlds.
I had hoped to see her amazing programs at 4CC and that she could gain some points so that she's not at a disadvantage at worlds for the starting order.
But for Mao to relax and get completely healthy is of course more important. I hope she will give her best performances at worlds and be happy :)

I'm not worried about the starting order.
If she gives a good clean skate, she will score highly, and she will move to the first group for the free skate.
If she makes mistakes, she will score less, and she will probably stay in an earlier group for the FS.
This will happen no matter which group she starts in for the short program.

I'm sure starting group does occasionally have an influence. (And all bets are off if it's an Olympics).
But most of the time, I don't believe it's a factor and it makes little/no difference.

There are countless examples of people with no rep/history scoring big from an early group. But these are either conveniently ignored by people determined to "prove" that their favourite skater is "underscored" or "held back"... or, another unproven theory is invoked to account for these "exceptions" (eg. "they have a strong fed"). When counter examples for that theory are also brought up... ever more exotic conspiracy theories must be conjured up and invoked to try and explain them away...

...When actually there is a much simpler explanation: Skaters end up in earlier groups BECAUSE they are low scorers, or they have not skated consistently enough to maintain a high ranking.

In Mao's case, her ranking has dropped due to a year out, and she didn't do any Challenger etc competitions like many other top skaters. So yes, she probably will start in an earlier group.

But I'm not expecting to need the pitchfork or burning torch. Like I said, I'm not worried.
I think her fate is in her own hands, not the group she starts in.
A good rest and good preparation will help, starting in the last group will not, IMO...

Thank you. That's right. I guess I just hoped for as many advantages as possible for my favorite skater.

Of course, her performance is the only real factor for how she will score. I hope she will be at her best at worlds :)

And when I think of it, skating last in Sochi didn't help her at all.

Yeah, she knows Mao but I am also curious if it would be Akiko or Jeffrey Buttle

And Buttle would change the music to another work by Chopin eventually (he said so in an interview with Japanese newspaper that, if he were to choreograph for Mao, he'd pick Chopin for her)

umm pity…It’s like a honmatsutentou(本末転倒) (sorry I don’t know what should I say in English)…

By the way, Here is some cuts from the Morioka EX…I love it!..awww.

CONK posted this message about Mao's training: To follow up on the skipping of 4CC, saw this from local newspaper posted on twitter:

真央四大陸欠場 佐藤信夫コーチ 「私のところで今週から練習を始めましたが、体が重いということで練習量も軽めにし、いまはジャンプなんかもやってません」

Coach Sato: (Mao) just resumed training with me this week, since (she) felt on the heavier side of the body, she's taking the light amount of training without jumps right now (NB: the news in from Jan 15, and in the quote Coach Sato didn't explain why she felt on the heavier side of the body, could be fatigue or due to other reasons.)

The words "heavier side of the body" is kind of difficult for me to understand. I really hope Mao is recovering and getting back to good health. But, I believe Mao took off a couple of weeks off after Nationals in 2013 to recover from a back injury and she just skated about a week ago. So, maybe she is taking a similar course of action, since she ended her 2013 -2014 season so successfully and Mao's freeskate this last Nationals was actually better than the one in 2013.

Yes, absolutely. The third movement in particular. (And yes, probably with Tarasova's choreography. Though I'm not sure if TAT would give up her dream of Mao winning the Olympic gold medal to the great music of Rachmaninoff!)

Speaking of Rachmaninov, I would just DIE if Mao did her Olympic SP TO "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini"...

This brings about the age-old debate: quirky Prokofiev or brooding Rachmaninoff? Lolol

Is there someone who could cut together a FS music? :luv17:

体が重い means ”feel sluggish” but also" heavy body". So, she is just tired or put some weight during the New Year's vacation- however I'm sure he wouldn't say that. I think there is nothing to worry about.

I read it as 'sluggish' too, not heavy in a literal sense.

Thanks a lot to rosewood for posting this translation of Mao's and Mai's conversation on the night of Mao's Madame Butterfly freeskate at Nationals.

I did not know that Mao, so dispirited after the GPF, had thought to "draw the line," i.e., retire, after her skate at Nationals and so asked her sister Mai, who for a long time had not attended Mao's competitions else she disturbs Mao's focus, to be there at the free skate which might be Mao's final competitive skate. Thank God it was not so. The support of the audience who love Mao probably most carried her through. It was not a perfect performance but in the words of her sister Mai, "the first performance that she could be satisfied with in this season." The foregoing to my mind makes Mao's "Jupiter" performance later even more moving and transcendently beautiful to me. Wishing her all the best in her preparations for Worlds.

Thanks for linking us to rosewood's translation gotoschool. My thoughts and prayers are with rosewood who I understand is undergoing personal travails.

ETA: Just saw that I missed Iron Lotus' brief summary upthread.
