Mao Asada

Thanks for the photos. rosewood posted them earlier and I was going to post them, but you beat me to it. Mao's arms, shoulders and back look more muscular now but in nice proportion. Her poses and posture are simply pristine: a perfect prima ballerina.

Agree. She has no longer a girl-like proportion, but a very womanly now. I envy her's which I believe many women are probably dreaming. ;)

Thank you so much for posting the link. Mao's 3A has improved so much. If she hadn't gotten sick, she would've been unstoppable even with a flutz.

It's wonderful to see so many outstanding 3A's back to back. Thanks yhma fan. I am optimistic Mao can hit her elements after a long rest and recovery. Mao did her great Japan Open LP and Cup of China SP after a long rest, Mao's LP was better at Nationals this season than it was in 2013 / 2014 and look at how high she peaked at the end of that season, and now she has a true triple lutz too.

Yes. If one thing she really needs to do is that to believe in herself more as I think she has some kind of mental block with her jumps so if she could get more confidence in her ability, she will be able to do well that she can do. :yay:

I would love to know what they were talking about Mao in this video.
Because they speak too fast for me to understand. I will appreciate if anyone gives me the summary. :)

Basically they are excited about her returning, asking themselves how she will fare, mentioning Lipnistkaya and Tuktamisheva. Then that she'll be skating against a tough Radionova in China. He's a little bit nervous for her, but he loves her skating. They agree that her skating is purer than Liza, Lena etc and they feel like having Mao back would put the inflated PCS scores for the others back where they belong. But they also mention that it will come down to jump ratations as well, but he thinks that if Liza or Lena get similar PCS scores as Mao "that people will lose their minds" and he mentions that it could become a "Sotnikova-kind-of-conversation".
Then they compare her directly to Liza and she even thinks that her skating skills, speed and command over her blade and interpretation could be even better than Mao and they almost argue a little. He mentions Mao's better flow, knee bend? and then she kind of changes her mind and is praising Mao for unique interpretation.
Then they agree that she needs two great programs and to fully rotate the 3A, about which they are always nervous. She says that Liza has the edge there because her Axel is always fully rotated (she even says "it's hard to put the two in the same box there" meaning that Liza's is better, which I think is quite foolish to say, when Liza has only been doing 3As for such a short time and has landed like 3 in competition. That doesn't stand against Mao's countless ones in both programs) and Mao has to worry about the caller, Shin Amano etc.
They say that she had a couple of injuries but also a year to rest and recharge, but they dont know what will be the outcome.

That's it. I think it is really interesting hearing all of this when the season is nearly at it's peak and everything has happened, but differently than expected. No one thought Liza would struggle or that the PCSs would go so high for all the top ones. Obviously, Mao's return did not put PCSs back, but it rather rose higher than ever for everyone. Also, no one could have imagined that Medvedeva would be the one with the highest marks, just slightly under Mao in the SP!

I hope Mao has fully regained her health and strengh and will give two performances at Worlds that she will be satisfied with :)

I also hope Mao skates great, that she is satisfied with her performances and that she is also scored well. I think she has been scored unfairly this season in relation to other top skaters, even though many of her performances have had jumping issues. But, her last LP at Nationals really moved me deeply as did the one at the Japan Open, her New Jupiter, the Cup of China SP and the Grand Prix Final SP except for the lutz. A great performance from Mao that is clean or nearly so is timeless and speaks loudly all by itself and draws in a huge audience like a magnet, no matter how it is judged. I also think the last thing Mao should worry about is Shin Amano or any of his ilk. I want her to visualize flying freely through the sky with big, beautiful jumps, picturesque elements and dynamic expression- an angel with wings that lets her heart sing with no tech crew or judges scrutinizing her every move.

Here are some links to great pictures and memories of Mao's past performances. Thanks to rosewood for posting.

Today, February 20th, is the second anniversary of my all time favorite skating performance: Mao's Sochi LP. The hardships of life redeemed in 4 minutes time and more priceless to me than a diamond mine. A performance that displayed the full depth of expression in Mao's genuine soul, as she reached her athletic peak and moved a mountain of emotions in so many around the globe.

The great American writer, William Faulkner, who shares Mao's birthday on September 25th wrote this:

The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life,..... and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.”

100 years (and many more) from now people will continue to view this performance as a timeless embodiment of fortitude with Mao rising up as the Phoenix to express the true essence of beauty and consummate artistry with the bittersweet mix of redemption as the special ingredient that gives it such a compelling human element. Thank you Mao for giving me a chance to see your incredible achievement!

It's been two years already? I still remember setting my alarm for 5AM or so in the morning to watch Mao live (from the television). I'm so glad I did, because witnessing her FS as it happened was one of my only fond memories of the 2014 Olympics :luv17:

Thank you so much for the summary, Nocturne. I am very grateful.

I am glad that they were basically praising her considering what I have heard about them and it’s a bit surprising to know that they had cared about Shin Amano etc.
As for the mentioning about Mao in comparison with Liza, that something shows how things are suddenly changing in this sport field year by year…

Thanks again. :)
