Mao Shimada

Mao's short program at Japanese Nationals was my favorite with a gorgeous triple axel, charming expression, great skating skills and picturesque spins with stunning acceleration. Extremely difficult to find a video of her fabulous performance, so I am leaving a link for the only one I could find that hasn't been taken down. I hope Mao skates great in the freeskate. https://www.tiktok.com/@quadloopexpress/video/7585585299019812127?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc
Agreed, this program is so well choreographed and very difficult; it’s one of my favorites this season. Her speed and complex steps, as well as her incredible spins, make it even more fascinating, and with a 3A it’s just phenomenal. Next year, if she stays healthy, she will surely score well over 80 points.

Mao Shimada has accomplished something truly extraordinary and unprecdented looked at in the broad prospective of this her 4th and final season in Juniors. Namely, she has won every Junior Grand Prix and Worlds championship she has entered (a total of 21 in a row) and only her own federation's extreme relative deflation in PCS has prevented her from in my view rightfully winning Nationals the last two seasons. Meanwhile, she has successfully endured the extreme changes in the age rules which have forced her to miss this Olympics and likely made her the oldest champion skater ever to be denied entry based on age. Her mental fortitude and consistency in the face of these huge obstacles is amazing and caused me to focus a lot more on Juniors skaters now.

Congratulations to Mao Shimada for winning her fourth straight Junior Worlds against such difficult competition. Achieving this four seasons in a row is unprecdented for women in Juniors or Seniors and Mao did it when she was obviously sick and totally exhausted and appeared near collapse at the end of her freeskate. What's most amazing is that she was able to land all of her jumps including an impressive triple axel even though she didn't even attempt a triple axel in practice and had falls and numerous mistakes on her other jumps. Mao Shimada really is a noble warrior who inspires with her resilience and amazing grace under pressure.
