Mariah Bell

Kori Ade has a brief quote in this IceNetwork article about Mariah: http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2015/10/20/155035268

"I don't think we're dealing with a skater with classic, crack-under-pressure anxiety," Kori Ade, Bell's coach, said. "We're dealing with a skater who was able to get by on sheer athleticism for many, many years and do a decent job. Now that she's fully invested in her training, the stakes are higher and there's a little bit of a defense mechanism. She's maturing in that way."

I been picking my brain trying to figure out what Kori is saying here. That she's putting more pressure on herself because she's invested more in herself? Because she has more ownership of her skating?

I think maybe it's because now she's super duper serious about training and it's Serious Business now so she expects herself to be improving/succeeding a certain amount? Like, if talent alone can get her a decent job, then along with training and hard work, she should be doing a great job and it's some kind of failure if she doesn't?

I remember on the TSL interview Kori said that under her previous coaching situation Mariah just did whatever she was told. She then said that Mariah was learning to take ownership of her skating and to define what SHE wanted. So maybe she psyched herself out? I guess I wonder what kind of defense mechanism would come out in this scenario.

I think so. Kori alluded to something like that in her TLS interview saying that Mariah was starting to make, for lack of a better way to put it, better big picture choices in her skating career. The example Kori gave specifically was regarding better diet/food choices. I got the impression that basically Mariah is going from a high schooler who skates for fun and is rather successful, to someone actually training both on and off ice as an Olympian.

I also mentioned this after i saw her at the Broadmoor jump event, she did not really look comfortable with the attention she was getting - and she was getting the most cheers or was tied with Mirai. I think she is kinda still trying to process and adjust to her popularity and that she actually has fans. That is a very different kind of pressure and one that she likely is still adjusting to. I could well see a young lady react in a way that could be described as defensive while learning how to deal with new found popularity, or arguably minor celebrity. She is now a recognizable face of figure skating - and that is something humans have to learn how to deal with, it is not instinctive.

It was also interesting that she sat with Kori and Rohene on the sidelines pretty much the entire event and watched with them, while other competitors pretty much all slunk back stage between their goes (well Jason did sneak out for Jordan Moeller but that was about it). I don't know if she wanted to, if she needed calming or if her team was doing to get her to see that she is on the same level as the other skaters. But what was more interesting was how well it worked, you really could see her relax and get more comfortable each round - so it did work even if it was unusual. There was a really obvious change in her comfort level throughout the event.

Yes and I think this has all pretty much changed over the past year- I saw her as I was walking out of the stadium at Nationals 2014. She was with some friends, and everyone was basically ignoring her, despite the fact that she was very clearly recognizable due to still having her costume on. I went up to her and told her I'd really enjoyed her and she seemed very surprised (almost astounded honestly) that I was speaking to her, and she basically just blushed and was like "thank you so much." She seemed rather shy and definitely not used to the attention (as again evidenced by literally hundreds of skating fans just ignoring her at that time in her career at that competition). So i think the reality of having fans and quite a few of them is new to her, and that the focus of her life truly being primarily on skating and not split with school is new to her too.

I am cheered at the possible implication that she is landing her jumps more consistently not in competition.

Here's hoping Mariah has a good outing at SA! She's not in my top 6, given the competition, but I hope she'll be at least top 8 here.

Mariah has one of the best FS this season. Can't wait to see it today. Best of luck to her!!

Congrats to Mariah on a pretty strong free skate that got her her personal best FS score ever, and that moved her up from 11th to 8th! I think this is a great step in the right direction for her :cheer:

Mariah placed 8th here, so my wish came true! My predictive powers for the rest of the ladies, on the other hand....

:laugh2: Don't even talk to me about predictions!

I do indeed thing she placed about as well as could realistically be hoped at this point. It was good to see her seem happy after the free!

I agree. I hope that she'll get assigned another senior B, but I'm not sure if that's in the cards. It would be great if she got one so 1.) She could avoid sectionals and those poor girls who are in that really competitive section have a shot at getting to nationals and 2.) Just to continue to get more international mileage on her programs.

I hope for this too but I have a terrible suspicion that USFSA is just about done giving out fall assignments :scowl: They haven't added any in several weeks and they don't really have that much time left to realistically add people to most of the upcoming events. They could add her or others to Golden Spin or Warsaw Cup, and that's really about it that I know of... most of the others are too close to today's date to really believe they're still going to add people.

I know I'm weak and maybe it's a bit out of bounds for me to say this but I just think Mariah seems 100% one of the most huggable people. Jason Brown seems to agree because he is always hugging her.
