Marilena Kitromilis

I am afraid that Marilena has been replaced as the skater being sent to the Olympic Qualifying Event in Beijing to try to earn Cyprus a Ladies slot at the 2026 Olympics in Assago. Stefania, who was originally down as the substitute, is being sent instead.

To be honest, I saw this coming. Stefania has been on a great run of form recently, and finished significantly ahead of Marilena when they came up against each other directly for the first time at the Robin Cousins Cup.

The priority at the moment is to claim the slot. And right now, Stefania is the more likely of the two skaters to do that.

However, there are still 6 months to go until the Olympics. You never know, in that time Marilena may find her best form and be regularly scoring better than Stefania by then. And in that scenario, if Cyprus has a slot, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Marilena could still end up as the skater that goes to Assago.

So, hopefully Marilena will not let this setback get her down, and will concentrate on doing the best that she can at the other competitions that she has ahead of her.

:cheer: HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY MARILENA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I hope you have a good day, and that the coming year is a good one for you, both on and off the ice.

I am so sorry. This is a back-dated post. I had so much planned to mark this occasion, but unfortunately both the desktop computer and the laptop decided on Tuesday that they didn't want to go online. It wasn't the internet that was the problem - it was the computers themselves, because the online things on the TV still worked. So, I spent all of her birthday and the next day working on them. And although I have now finally got both of them going online again, I still have a lot of work to do to them today [Friday].

I will hopefully be posting more stuff in relation to Marilena's birthday in the coming days. So, keep your eyes peeled.

Anyway, what can I say about Marilena? I love her!

I first came across Marilena when she started representing Cyprus. And I wish I had come across her before that, and followed her whole career. Because I would have loved to see her growing and progressing through the years. But, that's the thing about coming through the American system. There are so many kids skating that it is hard to get spotted. And a lot of talented skaters remain totally unknown to the outside world. So, thank goodness Marilena was able to make herself known through switching to her ancestral homeland.

Marilena is one of those rare cases of a skater that completely skipped a level, going straight from Novices to Seniors. Of course, with the age changes that have happened since then, that is no longer posssible. But it was then. I have long had a theory that when Emilea and Marilena switched to representing Cyprus, that the original plan was for Emilea to go into Seniors and Marilena to go into Juniors. But then COVID happened, and the Junior GP Series was cancelled. So, to get Marilena competing, it made more sense for her to go into Seniors too.

It must have been such a challenge to go from Novice level to Senior level. Thankfully, her first Senior event was at her home rink in Boston, so at least familiar surroundings would have helped ease the nerves. And she did well. Over the next year, she was getting used to the international stage, and building up her scores. And then, barely a year after switching from Novices to Seniors, came the highlight of her career so far. Winning the Autumn Challenge.

There followed two strong seasons. But then she injured her knee. And it has been a long struggle to get back to full fitness since then. But, over the past year, things seem to have been improving. And now that she has competition again on the home front in the form of Stefania, hopefully that will also help her to improve further.

I can't wait to see Marilena in action again.

But, more immediately, I hope she has a good birthday.

Ahead of Marilena being back in action this week, whether it be the IceChallenge in Graz (AUT) or the Denkova-Staviski Cup in Sofia (BUL), I am finally able to reveal the surprise I made for her birthday:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLxfizW9G_U

Apologies that this is being posted three weeks after Marilena's birthday. I had major computer problems the week of her birthday, which meant I was not able to even start making the video until the following week. And then after I finished it, I discovered that I had been locked out of my Google account, and had great difficulty getting back in.

Denkova-Staviski Cup Senior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Marilena finished 18th out of 28 in the SP, with a score of 45.50.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Denkova-Staviski Cup.

Looking at the Protocols, Marilena had three issues, but we are only told what one of them was. The first issue was with the opening element, the Triple Toe. It had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.26, which meant that it went from having the second highest Base Value of the programme to being the fourth highest / fourth lowest scoring element of the programme. It got -4 from Judge 2; -3 from three Judges; and -2 from Judge 5.

We do know what happened the fourth element, the Double Axel. She fell on it. It got the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.65, which meant that it went from having the joint third highest Base Value of the programme to being the lowest scoring element of the programme. Unsurprisingly, it got -5 from all five Judges.

The fifth element, the Flying Camel Spin, got the smallest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.23. It had the lowest Base Value of the programme, but because the GOE hit was so small, it actually became the second lowest scoring element of the programme. It got -3 from Judge 2; -2 from Judge 1; -1 from Judge 3; and 0 from the remaining two Judges.

The third element, the Flying Change Foot Combination Spin, had neutral GOE. It got -1 from Judge 4; and 0 from the remaining four Judges.

For the remaining three elements, the GOE ranged from +0.39 for the second element, the Triple Lutz-Double Toe, to +0.66 for the penultimate element, the Step Sequence. Apart from a +3 from Judge 5 for the aforementioned Step Sequence, the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE ranged from 0 to +2

Marilena is currently 0.40 points behind 17th position, Julia BROVALL (SWE), and 0.71 points ahead of 19th position, Yelizaveta BABENKO (UKR). All three of them are part of a group where 10 skaters are covered by 6.00 points, stretching from Genevieve SOMERVILLE (GBR) in 14th position, 1.43 points ahead of Marilena, down to Ana ŠĆEPANOVIĆ (SRB) in 23rd position, 4.57 points behind Marilena.

That was using my usual guide of using 2.00 point gaps to define groups. If I cut it down to 1.50 point gaps, then the three of them are at the bottom of a group where 6 skaters are covered by 2.14 points, stretching from Somerville to Babenko. The gap behind Babenko to Marietta ATKINS (POL) in 20th poisition is 1.94 points.

If Marilena has a good Free Skate, there is a good chance that she can move upwards, potentially as high as 14th position. The gap currently between 13th and 14th positions is too big to overcome. But, she has extra reason to need a good Free Skate, because she has Babenko breathing down her neck, as well as four more skaters who, although they are further back, are within striking distance.

So, let's hope she does have a good Free Skate.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

The Senior Ladies FS at is due to start at 14:00:00 EET (07:00:00 EST / 12:00:00 GMT). So 8 hours from now.

Marilena will be the 7th skater to start. So, first skater to go in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 14:46:30 EET (07:46:30 EST / 12:46:30 GMT). So 8h 46m from now.

Marilena is due to start at 14:53:00 EET (07:53:00 EST / 12:53:00 GMT). So 8h 53m from now.

Denkova-Staviski Cup Senior Ladies: Results

No video uploaded yet 😞

Marilena finished 21st out of 24 in the FS, with a score of 75.19. This meant that she dropped to 21st position overall, with a score of 120.69.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Denkova-Staviski Cup.

Looking at the Protocols, there was a bad patch in the first half of the programme, where four elements in a row had negative GOE, and then two elements separately had negative GOE in the second half. But, apart from the first of the two elements in the second half, the Protocols don't tell us what any of the issues were. So, I will only mention a selection of these elements in this report.

The third element, the Triple Lutz, had the third biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.98. It got -3 from Judge 2; -2 from three Judges; and -1 from Judge 1.

The fifth element, the Single Lutz, had the smallest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.24, but because it had the lowest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the lowest scoring element of the programme. It got -4 from all five Judges.

The sixth element, the Triple Toe-Half Loop-Double Salchow, had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at-1.26, but because it had the second highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme. It got -3 from four Judges; and -1 from Judge 1.

She fell on the ninth element, the Double Axel. It had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.65. Unsurprisingly, it got -5 from all five Judges.

Two elements got neutral GOE. The seventh element, the Double Salchow, also got 0 from all five Judges. The final element, the Layback Spin, got -1 from Judge 2; and 0 from the remaining four Judges.

For the elements with positive GOE, it ranged from +0.12 for the second element, the Double Flip, to +0.79 for the opening element, the Triple Lutz-Double Toe. Apart from two +2's for this combination, all of the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE were 0 or +1.

Only the skater that finished last in the FS, Adéla VALLOVÁ (CZE), had a programme with a lower total Base Value than Marilena's programme. And, consequently, Vallová was the only skater with a lower Technical Elments Score than Marilena. HOWEVER, Marilena had a much higher Programme Components Score than all the skaters around her. After the skater in 18th position, Marilena was the only skater whose PCS was over 40.

Marilena finished the Free Skate 0.45 points behind 20th position, Genevieve SOMERVILLE (GBR), and 0.22 points ahead of 22nd position, Marietta ATKINS (POL). All three of them are part of a group where 9 skaters are covered by 5.40 points, stretching from Eliška BŘEZINOVÁ (CZE) in 15th position, 5.18 points ahead of Marilena, down to Ana Sofia BESCHEA (ROU) in 24th position, 0.98 points behind Marilena.

Overall, Marilena finished 0.28 points behind 20th position, Beschea, and 2.16 points ahead of 22nd position, Ana ŠĆEPANOVIĆ (SRB). Marilena is the bottom skater in a group where 7 skaters are covered by 8.88 points, stretching up to Jogailė AGLINSKYTĖ (LTU) in 15th position.

Marilena has had a lot of issues with her FS both times she has done it, at the Robin Cousins Cup and the Denkova-Staviski Cup. And, as a result, her TES has been lower than the programme's Base Value. But, to be blunt, the programme isn't worth enough to start with. When she won the Black Sea Ice Cup at the end of last season, her FS programme had a Base Value that was around 4 points more than the programme she did here.

As Stefania has shown, if you have a programme with a higher Base Value to start with, then you can still get a high score even if you do not have a good skate. At the Gordion Cup a couple of weeks ago, Stefania won the FS despite making more mistakes than Marilena made here, and losing double the points in GOE that Marilena lost here. And it was all down to her programme having a high Base Balue to start with.

Perhaps Marilena and her team should try a similar tactic.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

Marilena and Stefania will be going head-to-head again today at the Golden Spin Of Zagreb in Croatia.

The Senior Ladies SP is due to start at 09:15:00 CET (03:15:00 EST / 08:15:00 GMT / 10:15:00 EET). So 3 hours from now.

Marilena will be the 31st and penultimate skater to start. So, fifth and penultimate skater to go in Group 6.

The Group 6 Warm-Up is due to start at 12:57:50 CET (06:57:50 EST / 11:57:50 GMT / 13:57:50 EET). So 6h 42m from now.

Marilena is due to start at 13:29:00 CET (07:29:00 EST / 12:29:00 GMT / 14:29:00 EET). So 7h 14m from now.

Marilena finished 14th out of 30 in the SP, with a score of 51.13.

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch the Golden Spin Of Zagreb, as I was concentrating on the Grand Prix Final and the final round of the Formula 1.

Marilena is currently 0.56 points behind 13th position, Elizabet GERVITS (ISR), and 0.11 points ahead of 15th position, Olesja LEONOVA (EST). All three of them are part of a group where 10 skaters are covered by 4.81 points, stretching from Ava Marie ZIEGLER (AUT) in 12th position, 0.70 points ahead of Marilena, down to Taisiia SPESIVTSEVA (UKR) in 22nd position, 4.11 points behind Marilena.

Marilena finished 17th out of 30 in the FS, with a score of 89.90. This meant that she dropped to 16th position overall, with a score of 141.03.

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch the Golden Spin Of Zagreb, as I was concentrating on the Grand Prix Final and the final round of the Formula 1.

Looking at the Protocols, there were a lot of elements with negative GOE. Seven out of the twelve elements. However, nearly all of them were barely more than into the minus range. So, I will focus in on the two elements that were further into the minuses.

The ninth element, the Double Axel, had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.12. This meant it went from having the fifth highest Base Value of the programme, to being the third lowest scoring element of the programme. it got -4 from three Judges; -3 from three Judges; and -2 from Judge 2.

The eleventh element, the Flying Camel Spin, had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.34. And since it already had the second lowest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the second lowest scoring element of the programme. The Judges gave it five -2's and two -1's.

For the remaining elements that had negative GOE, the GOE ranged from -0.14 for the fourth element, the Change Foot Combination Spin, to -0.04 for the fifth element, the Single Lutz. Apart from a +1 from Judge 7 for the aforementioned Change Foot Combination Spin, the Judges marks for these five elements ranged from -2 to 0.

The second element, the Triple Flip, had neutral GOE, and because it had teh second highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme. It got -1 from Judge 4; 0 from five Judges; and +1 from Judge 1.

For the elements that had positive GOE, the GOE ranged from +0.11 for the final element, the Layback Spin, to +0.59 for the opening element, the Triple Lutz-Double Toe. Apart from a +2 from Judge 4 for the aforementioned Layback Spin, the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE ranged from 0 to +2.

Marilena finished the Free Skate 0.67 points behind 16th position, Alexandra FEIGIN (BUL), and 0.24 points ahead of 18th position, Aleksandra GOLOVKINA (LTU).

Overall, Marilena finished 1.00 points behind 15th position, Meda VARIAKOJYTĖ (LTU), and 2.07 points ahead of 17th position, Nargiz SUELEYMANOVA (AZE). Marilena was the bottom skater in a group of 3 skaters covered by 1.65 points, which was headed by Niki WORIES (NED) in 14th position.

Although she dropped a couple of positions from where she had been after the SP, it was only by a couple of points. At least she was still in the same group as 14th position.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

You know, it's a good job that Marilena told me a couple of weeks ago that she would be doing the Sofia Trophy, because her name didn't appear on the Entry List until the Start Orders were released last night. So, I could so easily have missed that she was competing here.

She may have skipped the opportunity to compete there as a guest skater at the Bulgarian Championships three weeks ago, but Marilena will be back in action on home ice at the Winter Palace today for the Sofia Trophy.

The Senior Ladies SP is due to start at 19:15:00 EET (12:15:00 EST / 17:15:00 GMT). So 10 hours from now.

Marilena will be the 1st skater to start. So, first skater to go in Group 1.

Sofia Trophy Senior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Marilena finished 10th out of 16 in the SP, with a score of 38.92.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch LIVE.

Looking at the Protocols, it was a rocky start, but after the first two elements, everything went well.

The opening element, the Triple Lutz, was laded on the quarter, and she fell. It had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -2.95, but because it had by far the highest Base Value of the programme, it only dropped to being the fourth highest scoring element of the programme. Unsurprisingly, it got -5 from all five Judges.

The second element, the Double Flip, was downgraded, which meant that she couldn't attach another jump onto the end of it like she intended. It had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.25, and because it already had the lowest Base Value of the programme, it remained the lowest scoring element of the programme. It also got -5 from all five Judges.

The fifth element, the Flying Camel Spin, had neutral GOE It got -1 from Judge 4; and 0 from the remaining four Judges.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from +0.13 for the third element, the Change Foot Combination Spin, to +0.55 for the penultimate element, the Step Sequence. Apart from a -1 from Judge 1 for the aforementioned Change Foot Combination Spin, all the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE were in the 0 to +2 range.

Marilena is currently 0.84 points behind 9th position, Marietta ATKINS (POL), and 0.49 points ahead of 12th position, Saskia OUDEJANS (NED).

Although there is a chance that she could jump the 2.29 point gap to the next group, where there are three skaters covered by just over half a point, Marilena's priority has to be to get to the head of the group she is in, and to make sure that she does not lose any positions. Fortunately, there is only one skater within striking distance behind her.

So, let's hope she has a good Free Skate and does just that!

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

Marilena finished 6th out of 15 in the FS, with a score of 86.86. This meant that she climbed to 7th position overall, with a score of 125.78.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch LIVE.

Looking at the Protocols, there were five elements with negative GOE, but two of them were negligible. So, I will just look at the other three.

The second element, the Triple Flip, was landed on the quarter. It had the third biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.71, but because it had the fourth highest Base Value of the programme, it actually became the third highest scoring element of the programme. The Judges gave it two -2's; and three -1's.

The fifth element, the Triple Lutz, was under-rotated. It had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.94, and becasue it had the fifth highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the fifth highest scoring element of the prgramme. It got -2 from four Judges, and -1 from Judge 4.

In the seventh element, the Triple Salchow-Double Toe, the Triple Salchow was landed on the quarter and the Double Toe was under-rotated. It had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.72, but because it had the third highest Base Value of the programme, it became the fourth highest scoring element of the programme. It got -4 from four Judges, and -3 from Judge 1.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from -0.08 for the eleventh element, the Flying Camel Spin, to +0.79 for the opening element, the Triple Lutz-Double Toe. The latter also had the higest Base Value of the programme, and so remained as the highest scoring element of the programme. The Judges marks for all these elements ranged from -1 to +2.

Incidentally, the sixth element, the Triple Toe-Half Loop-Double Salchow, was completely neutral in terms of both GOE and Judges marks. And because it had the second highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme.

Marilena finished the Free Skate 0.47 points behind 5th position, Marietta ATKINS (POL), and 3.05 points ahead of 7th position, Kristina GRIGOROVA (BUL).

Overall, Marilena finished 0.40 points behind 6th position, Grigorova, and 4.46 points ahead of 8th position, Genevieve SOMERVILLE (GBR). Marilena was the bottom skater in a group of 3 skaters covered by 1.31 points, which was headed by Atkins in 5th position.

That's my girl!!!

There I was hoping for Marilena to get to the top of the group she was in after the SP. And what does she do? She only goes and jumps two of the three girls in the group ahead of her group as well!

That said, Marilena will probably be annoyed with herself that she didn't jump the other skater in that group too. Because if she had got ahead of Grigorova, then Marilena would have been the highest skater from the host club. And she was so close to doing it too!

Nevertheless, this was a great comeback!

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

Marilena finished 13th out of 20 in the SP, with a score of 39.53.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch LIVE, as I was watching the final day of Formula 1 pre-season testing, and then catching up on the overnight action from the first day of the opening round of the World Superbikes.

However, I have now watched her on the archived livestream, so here is the sort of comment I would have written about the Warm-Up if I had been watching LIVE:

I was going to say "Oh drat, apart from one girl who is not wearing a jacket, they are all wearing black jackets!" But, I spotted which one was Marilena straight away.

With this competition having a bigger field, the start order was on the screen for longer. But while it was up, we still managed to see Marilena lining up a jump, which she did out of shot. And then she came back into shot and took her jacket off.

When she came back into shot, she lined up a jump, but did it out of shot. She then came back into shot, circled around, and then started jumping as she went out of shot again!

She then went across the shot, turned around, came back again and lined up another jump, which she did out of shot! She then came back into shot, and started lining up another jump at the other end of the rink, and she did it right at the edge of the camera shot. So, we didn't get the full effect.

After a while, she came across the shot lining up a jump, and did it just out of shot. And after another while, the same thing happened again, although this time we saw her taking off. And then she circled around, and the we again saw her taking off at the edge of the shot.

But then we finally got to see her do a jump in shot. And she ended up on her backside! But then she circled around and had another go, and this time it was beautiful.

When the one minute warning came, she was in shot doing her Step Sequence. And when she finished it, she did a beautiful Camel Spin.

So, after a frustrating start, we ended up seeing some nice things from Marilena. Hope the programme goes just as nicely!

Here is the sort of comment I would have written when she was being introduced if I had been watching LIVE:

Skating straight after my adoptive son's girlfriend, it is my adoptive daughter!

:cheer: ALL THE BEST MARILENA!!! :cheer:

And here is the sort of comment I would have written about the programme if I had been watching LIVE:

Beautiful opening section.

Whoa! Really freaky looking fall on the opening Triple Lutz.

Combination jump good.

Change Foot Combination Spin beautiful.

Double Axel good, as was the Flying Camel Spin that followed.

Step Sequence beautiful. And so was the Layback Spin that she finished with.

As soon as she finished, she went to put her head in her hands in despair of the freak fall, but then decided to make it look like she was fixing her hair.

But, as she was coming off the ice, it was obvious that she was upset, and in shock.

Seeing the slow-motion replay, that fall was even scarier than it was in real-time.

Awww, she's sitting ion her own. And she does look very disappointed.

She goes into third position.

Well, apart from the fall, that was really good, so:

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

Looking at the Protocols, it was a rocky start, but after the first two elements, there was only one more element with negative GOE.

She fell on the opening element, the Triple Lutz. it had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -2.95, but because it had the highest Base Value of the programme, it only dropped to being the joint third highest scoring element of the programme. Unsurprisingly, it got -5 from all five Judges.

In the second element, the Double Flip-Double Toe, the Double Toe was called as an invalid element. It had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.90, and because it already had the lowest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the lowest scoring element of the programme. It also got -5 from all five Judges.

The fifth element, the Flying Camel Spin, had the smallest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.37. This meant that it went from having the fourth highest Base Value of the programme, to being the lowest scoring element of the programme. The Judges gave it two -2's; and three -1's.

Marilena is currently 3.44 points behind 12th position, Julija LOVRENČIČ (SVN), and 0.36 points ahead of 14th position, Kaia KLEVEN (NOR). Marilena is at the head of a group of 4 skaters covered by 2.11 points, stretching down to Salma AGAMOVA (TUR) in 16th position

But I am afraid that we are not going to find out if Marilena can make up any ground, because she has withdrawn from the Free Skate.

Now I'm getting really worried that that freak fall has aggrevated her knee.

I wish her all the best for whatever happens next.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:
