Marilena finished 21st out of 24 in the FS, with a score of 75.19. This meant that she dropped to 21st position overall, with a score of 120.69.
Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Denkova-Staviski Cup.
Looking at the Protocols, there was a bad patch in the first half of the programme, where four elements in a row had negative GOE, and then two elements separately had negative GOE in the second half. But, apart from the first of the two elements in the second half, the Protocols don't tell us what any of the issues were. So, I will only mention a selection of these elements in this report.
The third element, the Triple Lutz, had the third biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.98. It got -3 from Judge 2; -2 from three Judges; and -1 from Judge 1.
The fifth element, the Single Lutz, had the smallest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.24, but because it had the lowest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the lowest scoring element of the programme. It got -4 from all five Judges.
The sixth element, the Triple Toe-Half Loop-Double Salchow, had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at-1.26, but because it had the second highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme. It got -3 from four Judges; and -1 from Judge 1.
She fell on the ninth element, the Double Axel. It had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.65. Unsurprisingly, it got -5 from all five Judges.
Two elements got neutral GOE. The seventh element, the Double Salchow, also got 0 from all five Judges. The final element, the Layback Spin, got -1 from Judge 2; and 0 from the remaining four Judges.
For the elements with positive GOE, it ranged from +0.12 for the second element, the Double Flip, to +0.79 for the opening element, the Triple Lutz-Double Toe. Apart from two +2's for this combination, all of the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE were 0 or +1.
Only the skater that finished last in the FS, Adéla VALLOVÁ (CZE), had a programme with a lower total Base Value than Marilena's programme. And, consequently, Vallová was the only skater with a lower Technical Elments Score than Marilena. HOWEVER, Marilena had a much higher Programme Components Score than all the skaters around her. After the skater in 18th position, Marilena was the only skater whose PCS was over 40.
Marilena finished the Free Skate 0.45 points behind 20th position, Genevieve SOMERVILLE (GBR), and 0.22 points ahead of 22nd position, Marietta ATKINS (POL). All three of them are part of a group where 9 skaters are covered by 5.40 points, stretching from Eliška BŘEZINOVÁ (CZE) in 15th position, 5.18 points ahead of Marilena, down to Ana Sofia BESCHEA (ROU) in 24th position, 0.98 points behind Marilena.
Overall, Marilena finished 0.28 points behind 20th position, Beschea, and 2.16 points ahead of 22nd position, Ana ŠĆEPANOVIĆ (SRB). Marilena is the bottom skater in a group where 7 skaters are covered by 8.88 points, stretching up to Jogailė AGLINSKYTĖ (LTU) in 15th position.
Marilena has had a lot of issues with her FS both times she has done it, at the Robin Cousins Cup and the Denkova-Staviski Cup. And, as a result, her TES has been lower than the programme's Base Value. But, to be blunt, the programme isn't worth enough to start with. When she won the Black Sea Ice Cup at the end of last season, her FS programme had a Base Value that was around 4 points more than the programme she did here.
As Stefania has shown, if you have a programme with a higher Base Value to start with, then you can still get a high score even if you do not have a good skate. At the Gordion Cup a couple of weeks ago, Stefania won the FS despite making more mistakes than Marilena made here, and losing double the points in GOE that Marilena lost here. And it was all down to her programme having a high Base Balue to start with.
Perhaps Marilena and her team should try a similar tactic.
WELL DONE MARILENA!!!
