Medvedeva WDs from GPF

Euros are signfically less important than Grand Prix. It's competition between three Russians and Carolina Kostner. How could it be important?

European championships, for EVERY sport born and widely practised in Europe, are very, very important. They are not 4 CC, in which three skaters of USA, Canada, China, Japan, etc, can participate with no previous selection Whatsoever, and in which everyone advances from the short to free programmmes without, again, a selection.
For GP you’re invited thank to your Federations networking, unless you’re the 1st-6th at last Worlds.
Euros are much older than Worlds and until 20 years ago they were, more or less, “worlds” for pairs and dancers.
Euros in 2014 propelled Yulia Liptniskaia on world and Olympic stage, not to mention Adelina Sotnikova. It was the winning at Euros that convinced the Russian Fed to send the very young, just senior, Yulia to Sochi.
Furthermore this year Euros are in Moscow. In Moscow, Xhenia’s home.

Go back and a few pages and every other post is about it.

I am here from the beginning, you are referring me to my own posts lol. Nobody said there was no injury, they said there was something unusual about the statement and others begin writing "What do you mean, of course she is injured etc."

If the rumors are true, then her injury has nothing to do with boots whatsoever. It was just a stupid accident.

Also when did Ambesi say this that you are mentioning? He said she was injured pre-CoR yes, but I don't remember anything else. Which podcast?

Ambesi has FB pages.

No, it's the opposite. Euros are massive for europeans, GP are insignificant next to them. It gets so much media coverage, prestige, etc.

I don't know why 4CC aren't as important though. Maybe because it's several continents...

And I speak Italian so it's not a problem but if you'd be so kind to link me to what he said, thank you.

Go on FB, look for “Figure skating” group page and search it. Sorry, but I’m not so good in linking to other blogs, FB, Twitter etc.

It’s a matter of tradition and reputation and also practical: all Europe plus Israel and Turkey are included in three time zones and jet lags are nearly non existent. When in Moscow it is, say, 6 pm, in London is 3, in Paris 4, in Helsinki 5. So not long nights awake for fans, no flights lasting 9 or more hours for skaters...

I wish 4CC carried the prestige that Euro does. Of course, part of it is that there isn't nearly the long history of the competition.

It seems that last season was the first time all the top competitors have participated, and that was no doubt because it was held in the Olympic arena.

But also, it 4CC always seems to happen much closer to Worlds/Olympics than Euro does.

European Fun Fact: Dick Button was once the European Champion.

I think if she rest by now, she will be healed enough for Nationals or Europeans. GPF no need at this point if she’s hurt. As long as she does well Europeans, she will gain her confidence and it will be good.

I remember that was the competition the A-team avoided for the US (still kinda does), especially for the ladies. Like, if you were 1-3 on the podium you didn't go to 4CC, but 4-6 would go. Kwan or Cohen at a 4CC? Nah. GPF for me seems important because many of the challengers for world gold go head to head so you can see where people are at relative to one another before worlds.

You are too optimistic. Bones recovery is slow. Also do not forget about muscles rehabilitation after forced inactivity and "training anew" period - going to high-level competition without it is suicide. I would honestly advice to skip both GPF and Nationals at least.

4CCs took a number of years to become established, but today 4CCs is just as significant during a non-Olympic year as Europeans. (Ask Sui & Han, who competed at only 4CCs before going to Worlds last year and then took home the World title). During an Olympic season, however, 4CCs is less significant than the GPF for 4CC athletes because the timing & travel for 4CCs makes it too hard for most top athletes to compete there and be mutually prepared for the Olympics. It's all about who competes. There is not much prestige in winning 4CCs if none of the other top athletes attend. This year 4CCs is in Asia so some of the top Asian athletes may attend; but the field will be less competitive than during a non-Olympic year.

However, last season 4CCs included 6 of the top 10 dance teams in the world, 6 of the top 10 ladies in the world, 5 of the top 10 pairs in the world, and 7 of the top 10 men in the world.

During an Olympic season, the GPF is the most important international competition for 4CC athletes. Combined with Nationals, which are the last major event and, of course, the major Olympic qualifying event, for most 4CC athletes. Europeans, on the other hand, are often used by European countries in order to make final decisions about their Olympic teams.

WADA may make the decision if any Russian goes to the Olympics. As of now, the decision hasn't been made. This doping scandal from the last Olympics hasn't ended yet. In my opinion, there are strange things still going on....who knows...

Actually WADA can only make recommendations. The IOC makes all decisions on these matters.

Euros may be very important but Evgenia is in a very different situation than Adelina and Julia. She has already proven herself on every international stage except the Olympics. She does not need to win Euros again to prove herself or be recognized around the skating world as the favorite for Oly gold.

Nobody in this topic said this. Period.

No. There are comments that look a lot like the implications people were making against Anna after her GP. There are specific comments I was referring to and I don't want to single anyone out- nor did I single anyone out in my original post.

The point I was making is that implying there is some sneaky reason for the way the Russian Federation disclosed this is not really helpful. Of course there is politicking in skating but this is a lot of searching for something in nothing.

I think last year every top skater/team and their dogs wanted to be at 4CC because it was in the Olympic venue and they could get an experience of how the ice/sound/venue was like. It may seem unimportant but I remember Yuzuru Hanyu commenting on how he slightly adjusted his music to be better audible after the 2013 in Sochi (the same rink of the 2014 Olympic). I think that in general 4CC is regarded as a less important competition by athletes (the bad timing during the year and the distances don't help). However, it may not be bad if you think that in this way a wider range of skaters are allowed to skate on bigger stages, get better recognition for their work.

Europeans predates the World Championships, the Olympics and the founding of the ISU. Forty years later they even let women compete.

Four Continents -- that was just something they came up with because they felt sorry for the rest of the world. ;)
