I wonder how many times she has to make the GPF for people to stop calling her lucky. I suppose 4 times isn't enough?

But she is lucky in that she's gotten breaks--would she have medaled at Worlds if Gracie had performed her LP the way she had at Nationals? Or even just okay? She got to go to the Olympics in place of Mirai Nagasu. She's lucky that the leaders at Skate Canada imploded.
What's not luck is that Ashley is good at rising to the occasion--when an opportunity presents itself, she goes out there and gets it done. What's also not luck is her perseverance. She doesn't give up. She rolls with the punches.

One thing really surprises me that people don't realize the effect of injuries and are saying that "oh, 2 weeks is enough for her to get better". It is a fractured bone, not just some muscle pain etc. Anyone who has had any experience with injuries as an athlete knows that you cannot be in prime condition in two weeks after an injury like that nor that it is even in any ways smart. Even if she doesn't feel any pain at the week of the GPF there is no reason she should compete because the long-term effects of that could be even worse than what she has now. I understand that Evgenia is eager to compete because she is a fierce competitor but her team should know better and think of staying healthy for the olympics rather than winning the GPF. It really is hard for me to understand why she even competed at NHK in the first place.

Oh, I don't know. If Wagner wins Skate America, she will have 26 points, tied with Osmond and ahead of Kostner and Sptskova on the first tie-breaker. This isn't exactly the skin of her teeth.

Well, Worlds was also an example of Wagner rising to to the occasion. If Grace had performed her LP the way she did at Nationals, Wagner would have been pushed down to 3rd.
She went to the Olympics instead of Nagasu because of her body of work prior to Nationals, including a silver at Skate America, gold at TEB, and bronze at the GPF - being the only American representative in the GPF at that. Nagasu by comparison was 3rd and 8th in her Grand Prix events.
Also, other skaters imploding isn't a skater being lucky. It's how the sport goes. If we name our favourite top skater(s) I'm sure we could point out an event where they "got lucky" because other skaters didn't perform at their best. You're right - Wagner is a fighter who doesn't give up, and that takes a lot more than luck.

And let's not forget that she was seen in a cast literally 2 days ago. I don't think she can prepare properly for GPF and I honestly wouldn't want her to risk it. I think Russian Nats are going to be way more important anyways.

oh gosh, I would hope the girl would focus on Euros forget nats too. I don't think we want or expect to see someone in a cast a month before Nats to be skating at Nats. She has to think Olympics.

Oof, all the injuries! Like her or not, not having such a dominant figure in ladies' skating competing at GPF is going to make the event seem kind of incomplete. A speedy recovery to her and may she be in full form by February.
Bold prediction: Wakaba gets called up once Evgenia officially withdraws and ends up medalling (I'm going to say bronze to make this not a ridiculous prediction, but screw it. She ends up getting silver).

I was listening to Max Ambesi's podcast with Angelo Dolfini, and they talked about the Evgenia situation too.
Dolfini said if he was in her shoes, he would not risk worsening her condition by skating at GPF, since she has already won it twice. Ambesi agreed, saying that even if the others are getting closer Evgenia still has a good margin over them. He also said that he believes that Evgenia will decide to skate anyway and will manage - whether that's for the best, he said he didn't know.
imo, for her reputation is better not to show up than to skate and not win. If she doesn't go to GPF, people are going to assume that whoever will win will have done so because of her absence. If she does go and underperformes due to her injury, people (and herself) might start doubting her as the OGM favorite. Just my 2 cents.

I'm still wanting her to rest up, she doesn't need a 3rd GPF title and so what if someone else won in her absence? It'll give another girl a great boost on the home stretch to South Korea but, Evengia will be ready to tell the other girls who reigns supreme come the Europeans and Olympics

Yes but remember Nagano Olympic, Kwan also stayed out of GPF to heal from injury. Tara won GPF and got momentum for Olympic. In the end even Kwan won National, judges at Olympic chose Tara (who had more difficult layout) over Kwan.
So I get why Med thinks she can not afford to skip GPF. Alina is getting alarming scores.

I am sure there is pressure for her to compete now that Satoko is looking like a threat to Maria (though maybe not Alina).
If another Russian was instead the 1st alternate, there would be a higher likelihood of her withdrawing before the competition, I would say.
It's not to cast any suspicions or negativity on Evgenia - it's just the way politics work in federations.
Still, I cannot at all imagine Evgenia withdrawing in the middle of a performance. Right before the competition, or during practice, maybe, but I still think she would hate doing it. But no way Rusfed wants Satoko at GPF.

At this point I am afraid Medvedeva will still go to GPF. I am praying for her ankle.

I also thought about this that's why earlier I was looking at the rules for Withdrawals and Alternates. I have a feeling that the Russian Fed won't allow Med to 'officially' withdraw so as to stop Satoko from going to the GPF. And yes, it is more on politics. Med will probably just not show up or just show up but eventually announce that she can't skate due to lingering pain.
I don't think the Japanese fans will be too happy about her not formally withdrawing though (if she can't skate)... especially as the finals is in JP and the first alternate is Satoko. We will just see how it goes.
