Melissa Gregory thread

and of course you have the sickos who are claiming Melissa was never hurt and was faking her injury just to avoid skating.

What?! then why continue in the sport? this makes no sense. I'd be curious to know who thinks this.

Hey all just wanted to relay a message that Melissa's mom relayed to me...

I emailed her soon after the fall on Sunday and she sent me the email last night. :) She basically confirmed the story as we know it now :) So that clears up any of the lingering bits of confusion. But she also said that someone told Melissa and Denis about all the well wishes on the boards and that Melissa and Denis wanted to thank everyone who sent prayers, good thoughts, and messages via the boards! :)

here's part of the email
Denis feels like he has whiplash on his neck and his back is sore. Melissa when I spoke with her today sounds like she is still in shock. She doesn't remember anything except going into the lift and waking up with people looking at her. She says she is having trouble moving from the bruises on her chest, stomach and hip but she will take that any day compared to the thought of what could have really happened. Someone told them about all the people writing well wishes on the boards. They said if you could tell everyone they are so grateful to everyone and to thank them for their thoughts and prayers. It will make their recovery so much easier.

So I just wanted to pass that on to you! :)

Thanks for posting that.
I'm so sorry to hear they both are sore, but it could be much much worse. Now we can be sure they both will be OK it least.

Thanks for posting that. It sounds like things are better now. Thank goodness.

Thanks Tonichelle!!

I hope they take it easy and take the time to get well. That's more important than trying to rush things.

Poor Melissa...That would be a shock, but in a way, maybe it's a good thing she doesn't remember what happened. It's bad enough that Denis does and has to deal w/his own guilt over it.

As for sickos saying what they've been saying. I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I've been on the Net since 98. Not much surprises me anymore. :(

Thankfully *I* haven't seen anything like that (yay for class, people!) or I'd probably make a fool out of myself... OY...

I just wanted to add a little something:

Although I wasn't there when the fall happened, I entered the rink just seconds after. It happened just below where I was sitting, and if I had not been at the bathroom, I probably would have seen it all. Melissa was lying on the ice, looking in pain, and Anna Capellini, the italian dancer, was comforting her and looked quite distressed. She stayed nearby for a while even after the fist aid people had arrived and the other skaters had resumed warmup, but eventually skated away.

I thought she looked so sweet, being so concerned. I guess she has to be, she does the same "job" and knows the risks very well. I stayed by the ramp on the first tier a while myself, feeling quite concerned too. I almost cried!

Felt it was worth sharing!

It's been posted here and other places about the Italians comforting Melissa and Denis. I am so impressed w/them for that. I can imagine the others were in shock and weren't sure what to do, but the Italians did the right thing.

For a team so young and at their first GP event (I think), they showed great maturity and compassion. They deserve all of the praise for their actions they've been getting. :)

Melissa and Denis thanked them in the latest press release on the USFSA website... apparently V/M were also very supportive...

what a great group of people in the most stressful of times!

I'm very relieved and glad to hear that Melissa is going to be okay.

I hope that they did a cat scan on Denis too though. He hit his head pretty hard too as he went crashing into the boards.

From the video I saw Denis lost his center on the spin and fell losing his grip on Melissa as he fell. He then fell and slid into the boards head first;

She fell on her left chest. She was cat scaned and released. What is the news of Denis?

I hope that they are able to continue in the Grand Prix competitions. Will they get another chance to gain two scores? Or are they now unable to achieve any GP standings for the GP finals.

I love that Denis thanked their competitors in the latest press release. That is so classy but then they're classy people. :)

I'm glad to hear that they're doing better and I hope they kick some booty in Russia!

Thanks for sharing the good news, Tonichelle! I'm glad to hear Melissa and Denis are back home and their fellow competitors acted in such a classy way. Even if they don't make a full recovery in time for the rest of the season, I'm glad to hear they will be okay.

it sounds like they aren't giving up on their season... they're taking it easy but they're definitely still planning to skate this year... I think the only competition that *MIGHT* be a no go is their next GP assignment... I don't think we'll see them withdraw from nationals (or Worlds lol)

Thanks so much for this thread, and the newest news on how Melissa and Denis are doing. When I first read of their accident, I was numb with shock, especially since the earliest report seemed to indicate that Melissa had hit her head hard on the ice. It's great to hear about how other Ice Dancers helped them, and about Denis thanking them for it publicly. That kind of behavior uplifts the sport, and it means a lot to me to read about it.

Ice Dancing is more dangerous than it used to be, I think, because of the many lifts under CoP, especially the rotational ones. I am so glad that Melissa and Denis are recovering well, and I hope that they give themselves enough time to recover fully. I'll be looking forward to seeing them compete later this season.
