Men's Short - Notes & Results

OMG, I just saw Lambiel's program on TV, and I'm SO in love with him. I don't think I've seen a skater like this. So free, so expressive, so fluid, so musical, so much passion

ITA Lambiel is just wonderful. He's had such a tough schedule with skating and school this season and he has major exams to do in May. After that he says he will devote himself solely to skating if that is what he wants to do! He's a really intelligent guy and if he does give all to his sport he will be rewarded I'm sure. If he skates clean tomorrow he should get a medal and if he does he might just get the confidence and consistensy to challenge for gold leading into Turino!!!!

But he is the only male skater other than Johnny Weir who ever made me  WONDERFUL!!!!

Berthes, don't you think it's a bit of a generalization to say that all Russian coaches are cold and non-supportive.

Guilty as charged. I guess I was being a bit sensational  and feeding off a steriotype, which I read quite often on the web. My bad.

So sad for Emmanuel who totally choked - I felt like I was watching Kurt Browning at the Olympics once again. But at least the judging was better for the mens than it was for the pairs. Name recognition - forget it. Sandhu was deservedly buried while virtual unknowns soared. I agreed with the placements. But the two performances I enjoyed the most had to be Johnny Weir - too bad he didn't have the technical oomph - and the Swiss skater who had the one fall, but oh the spinning. I want to watch him spin some more and am looking forward to the LP.

Oh good, at least it won't just be me sitting by the TV yelling "Spin for me, baby!" at him then....

what....don't look at me like that.

I wouldn't say that Weir "skates like a drag queen" (it is, after all, really hard to glide around the ice in 6-inch heels), but at least in the long program, he comes pretty close to DRESSING like one.

Kudos to Stefan Lindemann and Neil Wilson --- Stefan is really stepping up to the plate on home ice (and Germany has had so much bad luck with their skaters the last several years any highlight they can get is a good thing), and I'm glad to see Neil make the final cut.

Emanuel, I think, could stand to get his head examined. I had a feeling something like this would happen because he's done variations of it before. I think winning his qualifying group was not a good thing for him because he ended up putting too much pressure on himself. Had he been 3rd or 4th in his group, I think he would have done a much better job in the short.

"Am I the only one who feels like I'm in some sort of non-reality place this week?? MAN it's hard to concentrate on "real life!" -- DoggyGirl
Me, too! Me, too! That was the greatest men's competition ever! I usually don't care much about the men -- no skirts flying up, no matter how Johnny Weir might dress, LOL -- but that was a tremendously exciting show!

Plushenko is absolutely in a class by himself. A world by himself. Joubert was good. Lindeman -- Wow!, what a thrill that must have been for this young skater after so many ups and downs in his career.

Strangely enough, I don't really find Weir's skating to be effiminate at all. I think there is a certain reservoir of understated strength in his artistry. But next year his approach will have to be "quad or bust" if he wants to compete with the big boys.

Mathman:)

LOL Mathman...

It's going to be a Hard Crash back to the Real World come Sunday!

I don't find Johnny's skating effeminate either. As a matter of fact it's hard for me to even come up with a descriptive word. Somebody somewhere described watching him skate as being more like watching art than sport. I suppose that comes close for me.

LOL after listening to the action all yesterday afternoon and being so excited for him and for Michael, I drug out the video of Nationals and watched them both more than once last night!! I should probably take a sedative before I have a heart attack waiting to finally see some action on the tube!

evgeny even with a torn meniscus is in a class by himself. :D

I watched the Mens SP's last night and WOW what a show! Aside from the mega Sandhu meltdown (too bad, I love his skating!) and not the best from Klimkin,...DId I already say what a show? My goodness, it was fantastic! So many quality skates, so much intensity and passion!

To start Johnny Weir was simply superb (quad or not)--he flowed, flowed, flowed, everything effortless, positions all breathtakingly beautiful. I can't say enough about his line/carriage/positions,...stunning. He is very artistic, very lyrical and has a grace about him that few men can achieve!

I am not normally a big Weiss fan, but need him to skate well so the US has a chance of sending 3 to next years Worlds. That said, this was one of his best SP's IMO. Sure he did his usual 2-footed quad but he really sold the rest of the program well. It was a powerful performance...

Plushenko--perhaps his jumps were not the textbook sort we are used to seeing (perfect air position, perfect run out landing), but they were all clean and landed. Between the jumps he sold this program--he was on fire! Happy to be there, happy to be skating so well, happy to show the World "I am Evgeny Plushenko and I am making my run to win the gold!"

The German skater Lindeman (sp?) was great too! So thrilling when the home town favorite steps on the ice and skates his heart out! He too was selling it from start to finish!

Lambiel--bummer he fell, but he didn't let it distract him! I love to watch him skate and I lurve to watch him spin--especially his ending spinning sequence...

This was such an amazing competion and I only saw it on TV! It must have been one fantastic experience live! I hope the LP's are as exciting as the SP's!

Thanks Eliza88 for the update!

It's great to know that the top performances "came through the tube" like that. I cannot WAIT to see it! Great report.

Who needs to go back to the real world when we're all taping this and can watch it a million times after Sunday:laugh: But seriously, there is real life to get to...later. In the meantime, Plushy really took it to them...I felt this undercurrent of spunk and attitude just screaming, "don't you even think for a SECOND that I can't land these!" Great to watch that controlled aggression. Joubert...well. Not that impressed, I confess; being a huge Alexei fan, I think the similar choreography and program concepts just invite unfavorable comparisons (again, for ME) to the wonderful Yags. I too am not the biggest Weiss fan, but that was a killer performance, two-foot and all. Haven't seen Weir or Lambiel, but being a sucker for flow in the men's comps, and missing Abt as much as I do for that reason:cry:   , I'm dying to see them.

BTW, THANKS DOLLYGIRL for the tipoff on somebodyelseslife.com--great, clear, fast downloads...the irony, of course, being that I got greedy and rushed to download all four men's programs before they got yanked offline, and after a good hour and a half of simultaneous downloading on dial-up, at 99% finished, the LAMBIEL download, of all of them, the one I most wanted to see, was the one that crashed:cry:   Oh well, at least I know ESPN or ABC will be showing him, and I have something to look forward to:)

Got Lambiel?

I DO, I DO Let the gushfest begin, ladies and gents; I just got the Lambiel SP--I have never felt this way about a male skater:love::love::love: Fall and all, he NEVER gave up on the performance...such an artist!!!!!!! Literally BREATHTAKING!!! SUCH good use of the music--exquisite! What is it about Swiss sportsmen these days? Between the gorgeous Roger Federer in tennis (his effortless grace on the court deserves artistic expression marks) and now Stephane Lambiel--who will hopefully start landing all his jumps and send all the competition packing!!! WOW:love::love::love:

Sorry for the rambling; I just HAD to get that out--now you all know who I want to win the title:)

Sarah...

that site is absolutely awesome, julia at somebodyelseslife.com really does a great job; low MB and vids with great resolution.

www.somebodyelseslife.com/figureskating

in case anyone hasn't checked it out and wants to; right now Lambiel, Plushenko, Joubert, and Weiss' SPs are a click (and minutes--or hours--depending on your connection) away!

LOL on the typo Sarah...

BELIEVE me, I have been called MUCH MUCH worse than Dollygirl in this life. I'm sure daily in fact. :)

Well, as far as I can tell, you are nothing but a doll:laugh:

Another good tipoff you gave me, re: the live Eurosport audio broadcasts, paying off right now--I'm listening to the pairs final--S&Z are up! Looking back at the best of the SPs right now...

Cheers!

Sarah

Watching the programs on somebodyelses life... wow, Mikey Weiss did sit spins that would make Eldredge proud!! And Yevgeny was on fire...what a skate god!!!!

I am quite thrilled for the US mens team fighting back after very poor performances in the Qualifying round to have 2 of them in the final group.

As for Emanuel Sandhu I am quite disappointed...:rolleye:

reminds me of Paul Wylie...*smh*
