Mens SP

why can't there be more skaters who are light and effortless like jeff buttle in this world??? he's so wonderful... i heart him and lambiel.

and this is the very first time i've seen daisuke's program this year. i was laughing so hard. now, don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing! i think johnny weir once described one of his programs or costumes as a care bear on acid... well now daisuke, if there ever was a swan lake on acid, i think he's been channeling it. his style might not be everybody's cup of tea, but he does have his own unique type of "musicality."

and the korean crowd just cracks me up to no end. all those girls going "wooooooOOOOOOOAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!" hahahahaha. fun. and then all these skaters, they've only been in korea a few days training, and they've already picked up on giving the "V" sign to the cameras. hahahahaha. cracks. me. up.

And that's not true. They get the same levels, this season Lysacek had always one more level 4-element than Buttle in his SP. Buttle got level 3 on all his spins and footwork at Cup of Russia, at Skate Canada he had one spin level 4. Lysacek has always two level 4 spins and only once got level 2 on his circular step sequence.

Perhaps Lysacek skated really sloppy and didn't get GOE, botched up a spin or had no drive... Still, my guess is that he messed up the Axel and underrotated it.

Jeff isn't using the same program that he used for the Grand Prix events. If they show the exhibitions on TV, you'll see that Jeff is using his Grand Prix short program for his exhibition program. That short just wasn't working as a competition piece. But what he is using now, does work competitively. I'm thinking Jeff has all Level 4s for both spins and footwork and probably got some positive GOE's on them as well.

Takahashi

3A GOE 2.43 OMG!!

Come on! this is ridiculous! I think the best Triple Axel internationally was this year Vaughn Chipeur at Skate Canada, and that one got +2,0 GOE. And this one was not better - it wasn't higher, the position in the air is not the Yagudin-triple-Axel-position, and he took the normal time of preperation going into it. I would even say that Chipeur's was still a bit better, even with the harder landing.

I am so swamped I won't be able to catch up on this comp until the weekend - but thanks so much for the interesting comments; this sounds like a great sp round for the men. Possible score inflation or whatever aside, this is really exciting.

I love Takahashi and can't wait to watch the program (and will gush then), but did want to quickly add: Yeah for Evan for skating well, that's fantastic. I'm with everyone else who loves his twizzles (Tanith effect or whatever effect, they are cool) and I love his walley's in the LP too.

You got to be kidding me. Takahashi had equal speed comming in and out . He had great flow, ride out, and exteded free leg. His air position was of reasonable hight a very tight. It also fit well into the beat of the music. All his jumps in the short was +2GOE material. If they had more difficult entrances I would Have given them a +3GOE
Love Buttles program
Evan did very well. I still think his choergraghy is to simple, but you can't beat his foot work.

Just watched the top three skaters' performances from the Youtube. I agree with the placement regardless the inflated scores.

I can't find any better words to describe my feeling for Takahashi's SP, except the word "Cute". - cute costume, cute hair, cute arms, cute idea for the music, and cute movements. It is indeed a very difficult program, and he executed it very well.

Evan was so handsome! Add me into the Evan's twizzle lovers club. To be honest, I got so nervous everytime I saw his arm flailing, and was afraid of his next flailing was coming. He does need to change choreographer - like it was the choreographer's problem.:p

Jeffrey was as great as usual.

I suppose if Johnny doesn't put it in at Worlds, he has a chance to win..

IMO, compare with Takahashi's SP, Johnny's SP is too simple and technically less challenging, specifically in the footworks. So if they both skated perfect SP without a quad, Takahashi will win.

Takahashi got 2,43 +GOE on his triple Axel - that means at least half of the judges awarded him +3 GOE. The Axel was great, but in my opinion it wasn't the best Triple Axel ever under COP - I looked through the protocols and really couldn't find a Triple Axel with more points, from none of the Triple-Axel specialists (Chipeur, Plushenko, Takahashi himself, Weir, Griazev...).

The judging should be somehow consistent, it is enough that the judges at Nationals inflate and at the Grand Prix events (Takahashi is always best at the NHK-Trophy) - but they should try to keep it consistent for the big championships. I don't like inflated scores at Europeans - and I don't like it here. And I think that the judges should think twice before awarding an element, in this case the Triple Axel, the title "best ever".

It will accumulate to the point one day that ISU has to do something to CoP. It's so inconsistent from competition to competition, and that big mysterious PCS, make the scores less and less creditable.

Do we have ISU people and/or judges check on this forum from time to time? I hope they do.

Congratulatios to the top 3!
For me , despite the lutz, Jeffrey was simply sublime!

Vaughan Chippeur

We know he will not win before he even takes the ice, yet when he does take the ice, one can not turn their eyes away from him. His style is a hockey player that does a bit of figure skating. I think he's terrific.

Joe

I don't think that Takahashi was inflated because he is Asian. Judges are from various countries, not only from Asia. Regarding the audience effect, Jeff is very popular in Asia, too.

This is from 2008 Nationals, Vaughn Chipeur
Rate this 3 axel [/QOUTE]
I give it +1.5 unbelievable hieght, speed, and fast rotation but lack of control.

Skate Canada 2007
I give it +2 he had better control, only a little dip on the landing

I believe +3 means technically perfect with added difficulty. Not that the element was done the best or better than everyone. If so only one skater could get it.
