Mikhail Kolyada

People are alredy seeing this post as proof Misha is not serious about Nationals. Apparently panicked or depressed pre-competition posts would be proof Misha is in the appropriate psychological state.

If I were him, I wouldn't post anything anywhere until the season ends. People are unbelievable.

oh it seems a lose-lose situation for him, no matter what he says (or HOW he says it) it will be interpreted in unfavourable way by some.
A week to go at least next Friday it will be all over!

What?! He might not have even posted it himself, if he does indeed have a social media manager now (apparently not a good one). People are wild. :laugh2:

Actually if people question Liza's pneumonia, then I guess Mika is getting off quite lightly

Yes, because you need to do this in time. Saying "I am perfectly fine" and later admitting to an unhealed injury didn't even work for Medvedeva PR-wise. Ideally a health problem should be known beforehand, then good results make you a hero battling against impossible odds and bad results are to be expected and earn words of support. Imagine what Misha training the quad lutz despite it killing his back could be spun into in the right hands! Remember TAT and Samarin last season. Misha's team managed to gain the least benefit possible from it. Instead of a hero narrative we have a narrative of someone who has had it far too easy compared to skaters who have struggled with real problems, which were real because they actually said they existed, in words. People are not going to read between the lines and fill in the blanks and wait 6 months for explanations unless they are fans and fans are not the ones you need to preach to.

I so agree with you, they have to re-work their PR strategy, I guess both Mika & Valentina are just too nice people, but they can't afford to be anymore now when any move of his is scrutinised under microscope

That's how much he sees the need to keep his negativity in check and raise others' spirits, even his teammates don't get to see the other side of him.

Sounds like textbook oldest child syndrome :sad21:

I guess this is why not winning probably doesn’t feel like an option for him, for his own personal perfectionism and for the damage it would do to his reputation.

I am an oldest child but I can't imagine ever assuming responsibility for others' emotional state because I suck at that sort of stuff. Misha is good with people and has the perceptiveness and skills.

I remember his interview where he said that after the FS at last Nationals he was trying to get the other guys to perk up a bit with conversation and humour as he understood everyone had skated badly and was in a depressed mood. He wasn't feeling much better but he still characteristically saw it as his job. And course to onlookers it seemed as if he was the only one happy and not weighed down despite a bad skate (i.e. once again proof that he doesn't care). Putting on a brave face just doesn't work, people never look beyond the surface, if you are not overtly miserable it means you do not feel bad.

Yeah, in my family it was/is the middle sibling who played the “Misha role,” so to speak. My oldest brother and I (I’m the youngest) are both terrible with keeping our feelings in check and consoling others. But there’s only six years between the three of us; I would imagine having siblings that are so much younger forced Misha to take on this kind of role. But enough with my armchair psychology.

Misha is going to get criticized for whatever he does, whether he has a bad short and refuses to speak with the media, cheers other people up, or answers with the mechanical and inoffensive “I’ll work harder.” We’ve seen all three, and people have found problems with each reaction. All we can do is hope for a good result at Nationals, because at the end of the day that’s what the press/typical viewers actually care about, not his psychological state.

As we are trying to understand Mika a little better (and also make time go a little faster) why not to turn to astrology I thought and looked up my old time favourite - Linda Goodman's Star Signs:

''Lots of people like rainbows. Children make wishes on them, artists paint them, dreamers chase them, but the Aquarian is ahead of everybody. He lives on one. What's more, he's taken it apart and examined it, piece by piece, color by color, and he still believes in it. It isn't easy to believe in something after you know what it's really like, but the Aquarian is essentially a realist, even though his address is tomorrow, with a wild-blue-yonder zip code.
Like the bewildered Alice, taken through the maze of Wonderland by Aquarian Lewis Carroll, you'll have to be constantly prepared for the unexpected with Uranians. Generally kindly and tranquil by nature, Aquarians nevertheless enjoy defying public opinion, and they secretly delight in shocking more conventional people with occasional erratic conduct. These normally soft-spoken and courteous souls can suddenly short circuit you with the most amazing statements and actions at the most unpredictable times. The typical Uranian is half Albert Schweitzer and half Mickey Mouse.
To this end, Aquarians are always analyzing situations, friends and strangers.
Uranians are a curious mixture of cold, practicality and eccentric instability
Another reason why Uranians often meet with hostile criticism is that they're so full of surprises. They can lead you west, then suddenly turn and march east, without warning. Aquarius has an obstinate way of not letting you know what he's up to.''

Does it sound familiar? :)

Misha has a sister who is only two years younger, there is no reason why he would be forced to take that role and not her since they are both much older than the other two siblings. Maybe he was simply better at it. Or this it isn't even about his role in the family.

I don’t presume to know what the dynamics are in Misha’s family or how his mind works. I don’t know the guy after all

Actually if people question Liza's pneumonia, then I guess Mika is getting off quite lightly

:otopic: Putting aside how awful it is to question a diagnosis like that, this is literally the worst thing that could have happened to Liza in terms of securing her Worlds spot, no? If the Fed is going to use the bye on anyone, it will be on Alina first (if, God forbid, something happens to her or she underperforms at Nats) and then on Zhenya, if she performs well enough to convince them to do so (and I do wish the best for that girl, really). People are insane.

Russian Nats is going to be exciting and heartbreaking, in all disciplines. Pairs and men are the ones I’m personally freaking out about.

Who are you freaking out about in pairs? I only care about Mishina/Galliamov beyond mild concern in the current Russian field and they have so far shown themselves reasonably well in terms of not suddenly crashing and burning. But you can never be sure of anything of course. How they are going to be scored against others is a question but I am not expecting them to be sent to Euros/Worlds this season anyway. I am freaking out about the ladies though, in addition to the obvious.

I love Boikova / Kozlovskii (more than M/G, sorry!) The third spot at Euros should be theirs to lose, but then so was their spot at the Grand Prix Final.....and we all saw how that turned out. :palmf:

I’m curious to see how M/G and the other juniors stack up against the seniors as well. B/K and P/K are only first-year seniors, and E/K are only second-years (I believe?), so this will be an interesting competition to see who RusFed wants to push as the future of pairs.

I’m not emotionally attached to any of the ladies, but I’m dying of curiosity to see how it all turns out. I have never been a fan of Zhenya’s skating, but I admire her as an athlete and would like to see her have a victory over herself (same with Alina, although her situation isn't as precarious). To be honest, I would love it if Stasya surprised everyone, but that would just subject her to even more hatred than she normally gets, especially if she were to go to Euros and not do well àla Worlds 2018.

I talk about these things as if all of my thoughts/feelings/concentration won’t be completely absorbed in Misha all week.....

That is what I hate about being Mika's fan - the intensity! All other disciplines I will watch and enjoy watching next week not so with men's even if it will go well, oh my poor heart :drama:

I don’t know about Misha’s psychology, but this is definitely how I would describe being his fan :laugh2:

And btw many here recalled how stressful it was being Sasha fan but lets be fair - Sasha was a model of consistency compared to our boy - no offence, Mika!

Man, I feel like I'm over the tension? Or most of it, at least. I love watching him skate, and I have fun when he does well. When he doesn't, I kind of resign myself to the fact that he can do great things when he's on. And once or twice each season he'll get there. Most of the time it'll be a bust, but that's life.

Ah you are a sensible one! I wish I were... Do you feel like that about all your favourites or there are some you are more emotional about?

I definitely see where you’re coming from. I find myself rewatching his “bad skates” because I still enjoy watching him more than any other skater right now. If I’m upset over a bad result, it’s on his behalf, because I can see how disappointed he is in himself, but it doesn’t ever discourage me from the uber life haha. Honestly, he could pop all of his jumps from here on out, and I would still find so much beauty in the sheer height of those pops, as well as his spins, steps, and posture. And his face.
