Mikhail Kolyada

The first practice session has just started but apparently, the two Russian boys did not show up. Maybe they are still en route to Boston and will show up in the evening session. Since they can have more ice time at New Jersey, probably they don't see the point of moving to Boston early.

When I watched Kovtun and Kolyada this past Friday that they both practiced hard again and both did their long programs from start to finish and then worked on specific elements. They are very different skaters. Kovtun seems to be calculating and measuring his program, executing it in a technical and intellectual way as he skates. Kolyada seems to be more involved emotionally in his skating, though maybe I am fooled because their programs are so different.

Kolyada’s program is kind of loose, with a few wacky, unusual positions and uncommon music. When he jumps he seems to hang in the air a long time like a creature that belongs in the air. He’s a little more animal-like.

Kovtun seems not to hang in the air as long and is not quite as high off the ice as Kolyada – it’s hard to explain. He’s more machine-like. Kovtun jumps with a kind of dry precision and practices hitting his jumps over and over (sometimes six times in succession) with excellent timing.

I’m not sure either skater “sells” his program as much as he should but maybe it’s only the discipline of ice dance where skaters tend to connect with the audience. After all this isn’t the Ice Capades!

It seems they did not show up at the evening session either, but Kovtun's instagram suggests he's in Boston already :)

Ah... and it seems with Nam IN (instead of Liam) and Majorov OUT, Mika might have been pushed down to the first half groups for the draw. That is not a good news... :noshake: (I need to check the regulations though)
 
So he's drawn #2 in the first group...! They better give him a good PCS, seriously. It's the same order from RN where he did well under pressure so I'm trying to read this as a good token...:yay:

According to Jackie Wong, Max and Mika both showed up in the morning practice.

He went through most jumps in runthrough, but in a Periscope someone broadcasted, I saw him land 3Lz as beautiful as always.

Thanks for all the updates on his practice. I'm glad to hear he landed 4T3T in practice, so all he needs to do with them is to land them in competition.

Mika is in the first group?!!!! :scratch: I can't get how the draw works - it is not for each group? Worst of luck but I hope Mika will be able to turn this into his advantage and shine brightly as we know he can!
One concern that he will inevitably robbed on PCS due to his early start but what really worries me that the arena probably will be empty as many people will start coming for the third + group, and I think Mika is one of those skaters who 'feeds off' the audience. Thats I believe why he didn't skate well in Vienna (IMHO)

In the first group? That's some rotten luck... I do hope I'll be able to see it - I mean, hopefully someone will post videos, but I wanted to watch it on TV.... Oh, well... I do agree that he definitely benefits from an audience, I can only hope enough people wanted to watch the opening ceremonies and will be there for the men's SP.
 
The last group, the penultimate group and the last 3 skaters of the third last group are determined according to WS and the draw for each of those group takes place within each group, but the rest is all mixed. Mikhail was the last one on the borderline (after Nam replaced Liam), and if Majorov did not WD, he could skate in the third last group. It really is a bad luck but I hope this will be the last bad luck he gets in Boston...! There weren't much audience at the Nationals but he did pretty good so I believe it should be fine, though I can't help but wish more people could watch his fun SP!!

4T+3T! (at the last practice before SP) His hip comes off a bit too low and I think that's the issue he's been having for the whole season... Hope he can fix that problem :think: (Japanese commentator at the Nats said he can land his quads even when his hip gets too low because he has a very tight air position though :agree:).

Thanks for the explaining how the draw works it does not sound like a fair system but nothing we can do about it ;)
I too wish more people could see his SP! But ohh well. I am sure Mika is 'cursing' his luck with the draw but in the end of the day he just needs to do his job if he skates his content as planned he will be shooting through to the LP. At least the ice will be fresh! Lets look for the positives! Gooooooooooo Mika!
 
Yay! Kolyada nailed his 4-3 and everything in the SP at his first Worlds outing! :love:
