Mikhail Kolyada

New interview is up on RusFed website:

http://fsrussia.ru/intervyu/3755-mikhail-kolyada-opyt-ne-prikhodit-s-neba.html

Alas, no time to translate it but a few points of interest:

-The whole SP choreographed by Stephane including idea of music (great!)
-Mika doesn't like heat - what he was thinking when planning a trip to California for JULY!? (I can relate to this as we are having a heat wave in Ireland here and it is unbearable, to work at least, lying on the beach would be a different matter of course:)
-His idol, Philippe Candeloro, came over to him in Milan to give some advice (wow I am happy for Mika)
-Mika didn't part with any further info on his LP :(
I found it amusing that "close to +30" is intolerable heat for him, and +16..+20 with rain is perfectly acceptable weather for June. That's what you get after living your whole life in St. Petersburg, I suppose. That city has a lot to recommend it but the climate is a deal-breaker for me. Summers should be actual summers, not a smooth transition from spring to autumn. As for the timing of his trip to California, I doubt he had much choice.
Misha doesn't like to part with any relevant info. He can talk a lot around things but gives away few meaty details.

Well, if he manages to lose to Erokhov and Krasnozhon he will only have himself to blame. He is kind of in a different class to them right now.

Absolutely. My aim was mostly to compare how well they are going to compete against each other, but with the amount of success Misha had last season he must be above and beyond those two. In fact, he has to show he can even compete with Hanyu, if he's going to win over him that's another matter.

I don't know where you live of course but you have to factor in humidity as +30 in a dry climate could be okay but intolerable in humid conditions. Oh God is it too much to ask for a normal Irish summer? It is +32 now and it is like inside Finnish sauna so I am with Mika on that! Lets hope air conditioning will aid his stay in California sufficiently for him to enjoy it...

I think a podium place in both events is assured barred any major disaster, the problem is that after his win at CoC last season, he'd like to to win a GP again but with Hanyu in both it is a bit doubtful, not impossible but... I wonder what the RusFed was thinking? Or that homeless GP messed up all the negotiations that much?
Finland is very handy but somehow hasn't been very lucky place for Mika so far - Worlds 2017, a disaster last season at Finlandia Trophy and honestly I'd steer from home events if I were him... I wonder was it his wish to compete at CoR or the Fed sees him as a ticket seller?

It will depend on quads number. Mikhail skating skills are far above many skaters, but if he doesn't jump those quads while the young one do, it will be difficult .... Perhaps the new changes will work for him and reward his skills.

+32 and humid is highly unpleasant. But I doubt Champery is particularly humid and it wasn't even +30 when Misha was there last summer, yet he still found the heat intolerable. Where I am everything under +30 is normal summer weather, "hot" starts at 30+. And under +20 isn't summer.
Ironically the only time I was in St. Petersburg in the summer there was a heat wave and +32.

Somebody has to compete at home, everyone can't turn it down. And the top Russian skaters in all disciplines will be there.

What did he graduated? Can he become a coach or a sport teacher? Or did he went for sport management?
Huge congrats! To be a full time athlete and also study is not an easy task if you want to make both ok not just skip through it.
Yes, he can be a coach with his education. He did not specialise in management.

RusFed obviously wants him in the final more than they want him to win an individual event. But I hope he and his team won't have to go down the same road (which they talked about before the beginning of last season) of somewhat forcing his form early on to impress the Fed in order to be chosen for the main competition (Olympics), and by the time he got to the said competition he was worn out at least mentally. On the other hand, not bothering with the first half of the season completely is also not an option.
At least he got later GP events this time.

That's why I'm a defender of the one-quad SP, even if just for the first half of the season. It can give him breathing room to test his jumps in the FS, which is expected to have a fall or two, and he will get a score close to the 100s anyway, against getting marks in the low 80s.

I'm sorry, about the part Misha says he need to do well to impress the Fed early on, from what I can recall, I don't remember he had said such things, could you please link a source or elaborate it a little bit more?[emoji144]

Also if he is lucky, the best he would get is 2&3 on each gp ranking. It isn't a solid guarantee I supposed.

Yes, a one-quad SP at the beginning may be a good idea. He is not going to be given an easy time about it though even if it is temporary, it's enough to remember TAT's reaction to last Worlds. And that was just in the media, a lot more goes on behind the scenes.

He didn't say it, Valentina did in an interview from last summer. She talked about how in 2016-2017 they had only got themselves together by Nationals, but they couldn't afford it in 2017-2018. We now know they ended up leaning too far in the other direction in 2017-2018. I hope they can figure out a balance this time.

As long as Misha doesn't lose to anyone other than Yuzuru and possibly Boyang he should get through. Of course he could potentially bomb and lose to a bunch of other skaters but RusFed can't insure him against it.

And now there is a search party for Boyang who apparently should have arrived to TCC by now but hasn't :drama:
I can't remember such a wild off-season and I suspect this will be followed by an equally wild and unpredictable season, with new rules, skaters who never thought would return (Dai!!!! I demand now un-retirement of Machida!) etc so I can't even try to think/predict anything.
The main thing is to remain healthy for Mika, the rest is workable, he's built his reputation with the judges, it is all in his hands (feet) now
Hope he had a good celebration yesterday on Russian team win!

Misha in California:

And on the beach!!! With a thank you to Mika's VK Group
Mika looks happy (and very handsome!)I think my worries about California climate were exaggerated

Also both Valentina & Olga received a recognition the Honourable Coach of Russia (not sure how to translate it):

Congrats

I wonder when exactly Raf is leaving for Japan. If it is precisely two weeks, Misha's training there ends on the 1st.

He could stay on without Raf though it doesn't make much sense? 2 weeks seemed to be too short a time for internship to start with but if it is turning out to be even less... :scratch2:

Valentina and Olga were awarded 'Honoured Coach of Russia' :cheer: :cheer2:

Valentina is now the only coach in St. Petersburg (and one of three in the country) who has two skaters on the main senior Team Russia, and one of them is the Russian champion and World bronze medalist. I hope she stops being so damn self-effacing. She should be able to dictate conditions, particularly at the Academy since she brings in the best financing, not behave like anything given to her is a huge favour.
