I come to retract myself: TALKED ABOUT THE LUTZ TOO DAMN SOON.:palmf:

Oh Misha... :slink:

The GOE on the Axel, though. :eeking:

It could have been better.

Gosh, I'm just heartbroken. I can't imagine what he's going through. On the bright side,
1) he's still in the final group
2) he got very good PCS considering the costly mistakes. The judges clearly love him as much as we do
3) he won't be skating under pressure to stay on the podium, but rather will be motivated to make the podium.
4) Carmen :luv17:

I stopped watching after the pop, but glad to know his axel/spins were gorgeous.

Also, I love this reaction. Handsome Meme King even in defeat

I was extremely nervous about this, that's never a good sign. But he can still make it. Pulling himself up by his hairs after a bad SP is nothing new for him. We'll see.

I was also nervous, but he can totally make up the difference. He just looked off, but his jumps were there. Let's see what happens tomorrow. He's gotta learn what to do when he's skating last.

I think he really, really wanted to skate well (his form seems to be too good for this time in the season if anything). And that is never a good thing with Misha, winding himself into a coil over his own expectations. Alina also felt like she was out there to prove something to everyone and it also didn't quite go well for her.

Anyway, there are photo of him smiling so at least he is not out there banging his head against a wall which is encouraging.

At this point, we can see he's in good form - the reports from training were all good. He just has to bounce back, but I fear that he wants to prove himself too much and I don't like that. The face Valentina made when he popped was very telling. She knows this is in his head.

I'm of two minds on this, though. I would like him to find outside help, but he needs to step back a bit from the expectations and work from the ground up. Had he landed his jumps he would have scored close to 100+ here, and his clean jumps are big guns, but I feel like he wants too much of himself. With his content he has a ceiling he can hit, and what others are scoring or how they skate shouldn't come into play, but easier said than done.

When one of the BESP commentators said at Worlds that he came off as "a very ambitious young man," I didn't understand what they meant, but I think I do now. I don't think he has doubts in his potential, like some posters in the competition thread seem to think. I think, on the contrary, that he fully realizes it and wants to be on top RIGHT NOW. But it takes time and nerves.

It sounds like psychological help has been useful for him in terms of dealing with the aftermath of events like the Olympics, Euros 2017 and such. It has been less successful in teaching him to put his head in the right place before skates. Or rather, it was relatively successful until the pressure really hit. Something about the pressure and the expectations, including his own, just pushes all the wrong buttons in him.

Oh, he is totally aware of his strengths (as well as weaknesses) even if he doesn't necessarily admit to it in his interviews, talking himself up isn't his thing but people who have spoken with him privately made it clear he has a good grasp on everything. He can deal with failing at things he is aware are simply not there yet, but knowing he can do something and not doing it is clearly the absolute worst for him. Which is why it is problematic if he wants perfect skates each and every time now, these expectations just make things worse. He needs to stop trying to prove things to himself and/or others.

I'm just not looking forward to the usual "there are certain mistakes I cannot forgive myself for" post-competition interview  and it will be even worse since he popped a lutz, his money jump, not the loop

Well, last season he fell in a step sequence and missed a spin, both once, these types of mistakes sound truly accidental, it's not about forgetting how to spin or do triple lutzes. There is a very good chance he never pops that particular combo again. I would be more worried if he popped an axel from this point of view. But this doesn't by any means exclude future mistakes in other places.

I feel like people would roll their eyes at me if I say this was a fluke, but it really felt like one - of course, triggered by his head more than anything else. I like that he landed the quad toe and the axel, just the camera wasn't good to look at why he didn't land the quad, it looked good. Perhaps if he had a worse practice beforehand he'd feel less pressured to compete well? I don't know.

It looked like he almost fell on the pop, didn't it? Something went very wrong there. His K/C reaction felt more like "well, these things happen and it really sucks when they do” than the usual "I can't forgive myself", so you may be right.

Ok, Misha needs to use Stasya's example tomorrow. They both have this thing going on where they can't skate two clean programs but they can skate a good LP after botching the SP, with occasionally botching the LP after a good SP. And Stasya's nerves are even worse, so if she can pull it off Misha definitely can.

I don't doubt Misha's ability to deliver a good LP tomorrow, but can he deliver a clean LP? It's been, what, two years since that happened? I don't think he can medal without one unless the top men have meltdowns

Loss of concentration after the stepout on the 4T leading to his takeoff timing being off on the lutz, something like that. He needs not to let an unexpected mistake affect his concentration for the next jump.
