Mikhail Kolyada

The thing is, he'll never get completely healthy with what he has. At this point, I believe he can only manage the symptoms, which is why it's better if they can treat them now instead of everything that happened last season.

Yeah, I am happy that he is at least withdrawing instead of forcing himself to compete.

Very sad but hardly surprising news- get well soon Mika :luv17::pray:

Its a tricky condition (chronic sinusitis) to beat for anyone but for a figure skater who trains for hours at a cold damp rink combined with the equally cold & damp climate of St Petersburg it is virtually impossible. He probably has to sit out the whole season if he wants to have a chance... sigh..

It seems he WD from Finlandia too. At this point I wonder if skipping the Grand Prix might be the smart thing to do, given the travel time required for his assignments.

I stand by my sigh. I’m bummed because I don’t follow many sports, so I’m not someone who is happy or sad if, say, their football team loses that weekend. But I do get frustrated as my faves seem to be those that have soooo much natural talent but can’t ride it to its potential—whether from nerves or injury or sickness. From Jeremy Abbott to Joshua Farris to Mikhail. I don’t mean to sound like an entitled fan—that he *owes* us this—but it just is heartbreaking. I was looking forward to this season so much and he just resonates with me. I don’t have another skater I feel I can cheer on as much and men’s is my favorite event by far.

I am just so very sad...:(
Trying to stay positive but it is getting harder by day...
I remember Sasha Cohen in her last two seasons was competing much less than before, skipping GP almost entirely due to poor health, even so she got 2 more World medals and Oly silver in those seasons!
Hopefully by playing it smart Mika still could do RN (would he need to be in at least one GP?) and Euro/Worlds which are way more important than CS and GP

Get well soon Mika

I wish Mika to get healthy quickly! Sometimes if one begins the season with the left foot will finish with the right one :agree2: . He will now has longer time to polish his programs without the pressure of the competitions. I think he has learned from the last season to watch out his health, so better slowly than with all the power at the beginning of the season and to lost the power till nationals.

I mean, we knew this was a thing. He should have obviously done that last season. I hope he gets healthy again, but I'm not sure I'll expect much of a comeback, though I want him to come back.

Stay healthy, Misha!:hap10:

Very sad news to know, if Mika doesn't compete, I don't even know whom I should follow.
Wish him a speedy recovery:pray:. In any case, his health is more important than any competition.
PS: Rumor says that his wife is pregnant and he is going to be a father, does anyone have any news about this?

May he recover soon!

My niece had a similar surgery, and had a good outcome. I hope the same for Misha.

I am trying to stay positive, he missed the whole season before due to injury and he had his breakthrough season then. At least it didn't happen in Oly season, he can come back strong. If he wants that enough he can do it
Right now his health is more important than anything else

I feel sad, we cannot prevent diseases from invading our life, but I think Misha does not deserve such a bad luck after all the bad moments lived last seasons. I wish him the best, a good and total recovery. We will wait your return Misha, wishing for a fast improvement of your health. All my support to him, all my love to Misha.

Very disappointing news. Fingers crossed that Misha is able to recover quickly and well. I wonder whether this is a different kind of surgery than the kind he had twice last season. I will miss him at Skate Canada. (He’s probably the main reason I initially decided to go, but fortunately many others I like and am excited to see will be there.)

I saw that on Insta.

Poor Mika! I hope the surgery works for him, I had sinusitis once and it was excruciating, I can't imagine it reoccurring!

I'll keep him in my thoughts.

Last season Misha had two sinus punctures, in December and after Worlds, these are simply to drain sinuses to relieve acute pressure buildup, but they don't solve anything long-term. This must be a more radical operation that will (hopefully) fix whatever the underlying cause of the flare-ups is.

Misha must have been forbidden from ice training (cold environment) because apparently he hasn't been seen around the Academy lately. The alternative is that he is too sick to train.

Could be both, in any case doctors as a rule want a patient to be free of an acute infection for this type of surgery, that's why I suspect it's a month away and not done now. We don't know what surgery exactly, it could be widening of nasal passages for example, but the goal of any surgery is to improve the flow from sinuses. It could be rather invasive, could have complications and might not work in the end so I for one do not blame Mika for not rushing into it in the spring/summer when he was feeling better, yes the second stay in hospital with another puncture was an indication but I guess their reckoning was that the first one didn't work because he didn't rest after as he should have done (heroics at RN - what's else to say) and that that time round with proper rest it would work.
I personally was in doubt about it the minute I heard that he went to Bali for a holiday. A month in a Black Sea heath resort specialising in treatment of this kind of condition might have done the trick but not a partying holiday with a jet lag, unfamiliar food etc...Understandably he wanted to enjoy himself, which is fair enough but a valuable time & opportunity for a recovery once again was missed :scratch2:

Now I think the only sensible thing he could do is to cut his losses so to speak , and say a goodbye to this season. The surgery will do nothing if he rushes back to training he needs at least 2 months after that. I do hope he understands that.

I myself feel like for me too, the season is over before it even started - first the news that there will be no figure skating on BESP anymore, at least on the TV - the end of the era! and then Mika's illness...I just can't get into a mood and haven't watched any comps yet :(
