Mirai and Mao: the flow of the program

I wonder if you remember Mirai's LP program last season. It had fast, fresh music and flowed smoothly throughout the program. It suited Mirai's smooth skating very well.

Despite the difference in tone and choreos, Mao's Chopin LP program gives me a little bit similar impression in a sense that it flows very smoothly throughout the program. It again suits Mao's smooth skating very well. Although I love this flow very much, I feel that she could emphasize the slow part and pauses a bit more to underscore the contrasts with the fast parts. The music has a slow part in the middle, but it doesn't really look slow in the way it is skated right now. On the other hand, I enjoy the last one minute towards the end, which more precisely underscores the fluctuation in the tempo. But overall, I think it a bit challenging piece of music to skate to as a LP, rather than as a SP, because of the limited changes in melodies.

Although Mirai's program also might have been lacking the slow part, it was less noticeable because of the shorter length in the junior LP program.

In contrast to the last season, Mirai's this season's program has more variations in melodies and some interesting dolly moves in the middle, which I consider to be the highlight of the program. Although I'm not quite sure about the effect of putting the spirals in the beginning (what would you think of it??), I really enjoy the middle dancing part that gives a lively contrast with the rest of the program (Besides, she can do that move only now as a 14-year old!).

I feel that, for skaters like Mirai and Mao, who have very smooth flow, it might be a bit difficult to bring in a drama because everything looks just so easy. But Mirai's this season's program seems to me to have done a good job in combining the beautiful flow with some theatrical effects that catch eyes. Likewise, Mao's gala Chopin performance has a lot of interesting variations and changes in the melodies and moves that give the program a greater range of expressions compared to her LP. I wonder they might be better off by such music choices for their LPs.

I'd have to rewatch both programs, but I don't mind spiral sequences at the beginning because it's a departure from the usual program structure, which is nice to see.

Love Mirai's doll moves. She's very fresh and age appropiate, which is really enchanting.

:love: Yes. I personally love both of Mao's and Marai's fresskates this year. They both have a very easy style and lovely flexiblity that makes thier skating look effortless. I can't wait to see Marai at Nationals. She is a very cute and talented young girl....and the rivalry with carloine will be reborn!

i found this nice little video. of miss nagasu trying a 3 axel at the Skating Edge Ice Arena. I belive th voice on the video is her coach, Charlene Wong.

Yeah, that's true. It's very original. I also basically like the calm start. Further, spiral is certainly Mirai's strength and the way it is performed is very impressive. She looks like a swan on the water.
I think that I might enjoy that spiral even more if it doesn't have to be that structured, i.e., if she is allowed to have some more transitions and a bit more dancing to start with. Perhaps especially because the spiral sequence is front loaded, it strikes me as a set of "required elements." Although this might be the same wherever it is placed, this is somehow more noticeable to me when it's front loaded.
But it certainly helps the audience remember how beautiful her spiral positions are when it's front loaded.

Putting the spiral at the opening of the program enables her to back end load the jumps better because that 30-50 seconds isn't stuck in the middle, it's upfront. It IS a required element no matter where you put it in Junior and Senior ladies and it does fit there well.
