Mirai Nagasu's future prospects

I am not sure Meryl is a great example or analogy. Meryl really was a top level skater; I am not sure Davis and White really improved so much; perhaps V and M falteredmore or were more experimental plus it appeared the tide had changed. Mirai has taken some time; remember Mao - she spent years working on her jumps and really in the end or temporary end she wasn't all that consistent. Then there is Caroline Zhang it is hard to rework jumps. Although Liza T is doing fairly well. We will watch other skaters like Mirai and Julia L.

Yeah that is why Mao won almost everything in 2013 and got bronze at worlds. And lets not forget winning WC in 2014. OMG she was so inconsistent, she never won anything again:confused:

Well maybe Mirai needs to work with Rafael or Caroline Zhang's old coach that was married to Karen Kwan. Mirai needs someone who can take some control and make her work for it and improve her technique. Her UR's should have been dealt with many seasons ago. Tom Z is too soft and Frank Carol is more about making every girl into an ice princess. Rafael would be perfect for her.

I'm not sure if Rafael is the answer either. His track record with Ashley and Adam and their jumps isn't that great.

Ashley is showing improvement under Rafael, her bronze at the GPF is proof of that - she only had one call on her salchow combo. IMO, Adam's problem isn't his jump technique but his nerves at competitions.

We haven't seen Mirai skate since COR, so I'm not counting her out yet for Nationals.

I sorry if you might have taken my response in the wrong light or if I am taking your response as almost a personal attack. However,Kostner won a lot with often bad performances which some would say is similar to Mao unlike Davis who for the last two quads has been consistently at the top or the last six years or so at least :) Please chill out and start 2015 on a good note:) Mao never really fixed her jump issues and the triple axel even to the Olympics was inconsistent. Results weren't too bad of course but the skating was not consistent like Meryl or D and W :)

Tom Z is too soft

That is the first time I have ever heard someone call Tom "Sixteen year old student is bawling his eyes out in the knc with a broken leg so I'll tell him what he did wrong and that he should be glad he did it" Z "too soft".

Mao had her wins and her disappointments over the years. What she was able to do was achieve some of her major goals, including four WCs, altho the OGM she desperately wanted was never to be. She did win Olympic silver in 2010, three 4CC championships, and four GPF championships. She was a great champion, even though she frequently underrotated her jumps. But Mao has always been an incredibly gifted performer with great musicality who skated her heart out, and created that magical bond with her audience, whether live or on TV.

Mirai's performances, with her blank face and restricted emotion, just do not have anywhere near the impact that Mao's have.

How about you chill out and stop using every opportunity to make digs at Mao and Carolina. Remember in another thread your point about Mao was her horrible costumes, as if that has anything to do with consistency.Whether you like it or not Mao was able to make it to the world podium in 2013 and set the SP world record.

And what does Davis and White have to do with your digs at Mao
And no I dont make personal attacks at my fellow posters

I hope it's okay to ask the question in the thread, but I read somewhere that the skating world treats Mirai with kid gloves and has for a long time. Is there a specific incident that made this happen, or is it just that she could be emotionally fragile?

I want her to skate well at Nationals- I guess she really has to rotate her jumps. I would love to see her Medal again.

I've never heard of this. Not sure what it means as I certainly don't think her federation treats her with kid gloves nor do judges at international tournaments.

I too hope she rotates her jumps and medals at Nationals.

That was said by Dave Lease from the skating lesson. He said that everytime he critices Mirai people on their facebook page attacks him. So fans in general treat Mirai with kid gloves

It's an attack to say that Mao and Kostner often win with bad performances and that Mao never fixed her jumping issues, as if the Sochi LP and her Worlds 2014 among many others never happened. Over 1.5 million hits on Tarasova's commentary of her Sochi LP speaks for itself. Carolina's Olympic performance was also a great performance that will always be remembered by those who love figure skating. It's strange how two of the top skaters are dragged into a Mirai thread in a derogatory manner as you have often done with Mao in the past. Apologize and then pounce.

I really liked Mirai's SP performance at Rostelecom a lot and wish her the best in Nationals. I'll be cheering for her.

Well, I will be rooting for Mirai this Nationals as I always do. But after another lackluster Grand Prix she doesn't have a solid foundation to expect USFS support. She is a good competitor, you hardly see any falls, but she has been marked as a chronic UR. Some definitely are, but there are times when I have to go to slow motion to notice and see the < or <<.

Funny I was reading an article about Mirai by Jack Gallagher on JapanTimes about her controversial exclusion from the Oly team. He seemed a tad bit angry that Kristi Yamaguchi was contacted and never responded. I guess he just likes to strike up controversy, but it was clear before Nationals that Ashley was going to be on the Oly team. Two decent though not spectacular performances in three days despite years of poor performance does not an Olympic team member make. You can either be hardass and tell Ashley "Sucks to be you for bombing this Nationals" kind of like Dan O'Brien when he was literally the best decathlete in the world and miss his pole vault and got no points and therefore didn't place at his Olympic Trials and he was left off the team. I forget the year, 1992 I think, but he was left off and had to work his butt off for four more years until he finally won his Olympic Gold Medal. I like the idea of looking at an athlete's body of work to determine teams. Sometimes you're sick, or took a bad fall the week before and your muscles are still sore, and don't perform to your best. That shouldn't negate an entire four years of being the best American athlete who gets left off. It was further reinforced when Mirai was given 4CCs and completely bombed. Of course maybe her heart wasn't in it at 4CCs, but didn't she place like 9th??? She is so up and down even I didn't feel she deserved Olys over Ashley. With all the promotion and probably contracts it was clear that Gold and Wagner would be in Sochi. Mirai just needed to beat Polina, and she didn't. Them's the breaks. We've all (or most of us) have gotten screwed at one time or another, but before you call conspiracy you have to see how you contributed to what seems like an unfair decision. Mirai showed up without a coach, and had average results on the GP, when Wagner made GPF.

OT, but does Jack Gallagher have any connection to Japan? Like a wife who skated or something. I read his article about Machida's sudden retirement and didn't understand where he was coming from. Is he in bed with JSF?

I don't remember Dave from TSL saying Mirai was treated with kid gloves. Maybe when she was 13 and won her first and only National title... She was clearly a special talent. But if they were favoring Flatt over Mirai at 2010 Nationals, there were no kid gloves. She was smacked with huge UR's when she clearly had the best freeskate. And I mean, over FLATT?? Mirai was a potential star in the sport and they went with Flatt? Lucikly Mirai produced in Vancouver and really placed the best she possibly could, and several places over the US National champion.

I don´t know. But wasn´t he the guy yhay wrote the article about Gold injury being false?

I was confused by that because I follow the Skating Lesson on Facebook and hadn't seen ANY responses (at least this year) where people criticize or attack them for their comments on Mirai (or via comments on their page). Weird.

I don't agree with him a lot, but I did agree with that. Mirai seems to be a "protected species". As evidenced by some fans' disgusting behaviour last season.

If they can they delete unacceptable comments off their facebook, they probably deleted them?

Yeah, I was wondering that (though if the comments are so bad that they have to be deleted, I consider them to be the weirdo fringe and not representative of the "skating world" protecting Mirai, as they have plenty of their regulars who agree with their comments. They actually have been very fair with Mirai this season I think, as opposed to some of their comments on Ashley and Gracie which I have found unduly harsh).

Fans "in general" most certainly do not treat Mirai with kid gloves.
Talk about revisionist history.
She gets lots of criticism on GS alone regarding her technique, expression, etc.
And she received a TON of unfair criticism after Wagner was chosen for the Olympic team.

When Mirai was with Charlene Wong Mirai was often in tears at competitions....from nerves. It might have been U. S. Nationals in 2009 that the TV commentators mentioned that Mirai was crying and a bundle of nerves and hardly able to compete. After Mirai switched to Frank Carroll in May 2009 I remember hearing Frank say to her as she came off the ice "no tears no tears". Perhaps the crying is why some people think Mirai is fragile.
