Mirai Nagasu's future prospects

Her dress is beautiful, the choreography is beautiful - now......clean up the technical.

The URs are still clearly a problem but I'll be a typical Mirai fan and point to the positive:

1. She went for everything: I can't recall the last time Mirai attempted a program with that much content. That shows that she's gained some confidence over the summer and that's a plus.

2. She attacked the whole program: She didn't back off of any of the jumps...not even the 3S. Usually she starts off with speed and attack but gradually slows down. Her stamina has improved. She didn't look winded by the end of the program. Again, that's a plus.

3. She didn't give up: After that fall on the 3S she didn't back off or give up. She hit the remainder of her jumps and finished up strong. Again, that's a plus b/c in the past a fall would take all of the wind out of her sails.

It sucks that she got so many URs but I do see a lot of good things that prove she's trying and is getting better. It may not come together all at once but I do think (even with all of the URs) this was a better performance than at the US classic.

I am a rabid Mirai fan and I don't know if she has the will or the finances or the time to rework herself like Mao did, but I will tell you this.....technical shmectial....
Watch Mirai's 2010 national free skate. Despite the mistakes, would you rather see that again or Ms. Flatt's program?
Look at Mao's world winning program from last season...would you rather see that again along with its mistakes or any of Miss Polina's programs? I am not here to bash Miss Polina or Ms. Flatt.
I am here to tell you Mirai has IT. She makes me feel a program. I don't think I am alone. Look at the number of posts here. I wish her the best and will cheer her on at Nats as usual.
I just hope she remembers what MK said....that life is about more than triple jumps....and I hope she has a long and happy life full of love....
In the meanwhile, she has every right to be bitter about the USFSA decision to not send her to Olys. But I don't see that bitterness...I see a bit of spark coming back with this performance....maybe the biggest spark since 2010.
You go girl!

to be honest, Polina's pink fairy program is one program that I revisit quite often these days....

ITA. Another positive despite the UR's is that she is looking a lot stronger at this point in the season than she has in the past. Even with an all over the place coaching situation last year she still managed to do well at Nationals. Tom Z. Seems to be working well, she attacked everything in that program. I love the 7 triple layout. Being unhappy with her score she will go back and work harder. Can't wait to watch her at SA!

I think it's great to see Mirai getting these opportunities to really go out there and prove that she loves to skate and is working hard to improve what she needs to. There's no sugar coating now that she's more grown up, been celebrated at the top, had collapses and controversies. You get the sense that all of these experiences are still being blended together in her complicated persona, and (1) her story hasn't been written yet; and (2) it's gonna' be interesting to see what she do this season.

It all depends on how she does in the GP vs a vis the other US ladies. If Gracie, Polina, Courtney, and Ashley all place well and don't garner a bunch of URs and Mirai has an up-and-down GP season with URs going into Nationals, she could be facing even stiffer competition than she did last season.

That's a lot of "ifs"... I'm just happy that it appears mirai is finally back in the right mentally and training environment that may actually have a chance to tap into her full potential that has never been realized, even if she never becomes national champion again

The confidence and drive is back - she's serious about getting back in the game, and I really admire that. She needs to clean up her technical and maybe add something to the beginning of the program, but I'm seeing sparks of the old Mirai, and that's really exciting.

There's always the possibility that it won't end up well, but why disregard her now? Let's count her little victories now instead of dwelling on what might happen. This is definitely a step in the right direction.

I think a renewed focus and improved fitness will help Mirai enormously. If her coach can convince her that her technical end is improving and, with more work, those under rotations and GOEs will improve, then she has a chance. Ashley has to produce; she's used her mulligan. Gracie is still the premiere US girl but she, too, must show her worth. Polina is the spritely wunderkin. Not feeling her as the whole package but time will tell. Looking forward to the GPs and Nationals. If I had to guess now I might see 1. Gracie 2. Polina 3. Mirai 4. Ashley. Just like last year. But this time the World ticket goes to Mirai.

Just looking at JO vids. It's sad that this spindly middle school student was 30 points ahead of Nagasu and Wagner. Radionova's leg positions are terrible. They are never togeather or straight. Everything looks like it's on a pait of stilts. Ugly to look at.

I agree. It might be a lot of "ifs" but Mirai has to sustain this level - and in the not too distant past that was a challenge for her. I'm glad to see her moving in the right direction but I'm not getting my hopes up again just to be dashed.

If Radianovas leg positions are terrible, where does that put Pogorilayas?

Pogorilaya's? If anyone, Anna has gorgeous presentation and great skating skills. Just for example, look at her mastery of one-foot skating.

It's good to see her trying 7 triples but, with all due respect, I don't see any improvement from last year's nationals. The underrotations are a persistent problem and not something to look past and say "she's almost there." She needs to perform well, not underrotate, and not fall to get scores that can threaten Polina and Gracie if they skate well. To me, she is nowhere close to that form. I hate saying that because I do like Mirai.

She did look a lot more like the Olympic Mirai but the UR's a huge issue and she seems to have problems with this consistently that it is the norm. She does have the full pkg though folks really nice. The Russian babies don't have the power the Americans have or the maturity and nice lines yet. Mirai might be running out of time and money though; I hope she can put in a good show this year still Gracie looks as good a s Gold. Ashley looks or reminds me a bit of Rachel Flatt in someways; i wonder if her time has passed = for irai the clock mayu be ticking.

Skaters don't get deductions because some viewers think their legs look funny. :rolleye:
Radionova may be young and her leg positions may be odd, but darned if she doesn't take off on the right edge, complete full rotations, land on one foot, and manage to do so on all her jumps with no falls! No wonder she was 30 points ahead of a pair of skaters neither of whom could get through a program in the same fashion.

And gee, Radionova looks as if she actually ENJOYS skating the whole time she is on the ice, unlike Mirai, who looked grim until the final 15 seconds when she realized she was supposed to be SELLING the program.

ROFL. What are you watching? Anna cannot extend her leg straight, travels all over the ice on her spins, and constantly lurches about whilst spinning that makes me afraid she'll fall over every time she does a spin. At least Radianova can stick her leg out straight and stay centered.

Good points. I'd like to add that Elena R's program has much more going on in between the elements than either Ashley or Mirai.

Anna cannot extend her leg straight

Apparently.

travels all over the ice on her spins

How is it connected with her legs' straightness? More, I have never heard that not bending knees is an advantage of any skater. And about spins, they aren't her best element, but she doesn't execute them badly. She travels sometimes, true, but has great positions, especially the donut one and good speed. She isn't lurched either.
