Re: Movie lines

Kasey,
Achk! For some reason I thought you had specified that it was a '50s film, but I was wrong, you didn't. "Pump Up the Volume" is a good one.

As for, "You're out of your tree"......"It's not my tree" Why that's Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson) to Sam (Johnny Depp) in "Benny and Joon"--Benny (Aidan Quinn) being Joon's brother.

For another Johnny Depp movie: "It was perfect." What movie and character?

Also, there's another '90s (or it may have been released in '00) movie I always think of when I think of "Pump Up the Volume," only because they both have a connection to recording, althouth "PUTV" is really about underground radio. Let's see, a good line....okay, this is slightly paraphrased, but if you know the movie, you'll recognize it:

"Do you have 'I Just Called to Say I Love You'? It's for my daughter."
"No! Go away! Do you even know your daughter?! There is no way she likes that song! Ooh, I'm sorry, is she in a coma?"

Re: Movie lines

Movie line questions from five movies. Hints: #1 is from the late '60s; #2 is from the early '60s; #3 is from the '80s; #4 is from very early '80s; #5 is from the '90s.

1. "I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal."

====================
2. "What changed your mind? Was it my pies?"

2a.
A--"Whenever you touch me, darling, I go as limp as a noodle."
B-- "Yes, I am familiar with that feeling."

======================

3. "I mean don't just walk in. You move across the room. And you don't talk to her. You use your face. You use your body. You use everything. That's what I do. I mean I just send out this vibe and I have personally found that women do respond. I mean, something happens... That's the attitude... The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude."

3a. "So what Jefferson was saying was 'Hey! You know, we left this England place because it was bogus. So if we don't get some cool rules ourselves, pronto, we'll just be bogus too.'"

====================

4. "I can still hear those cheers, they still ring in my ears and for years they remain in my thoughts. 'Cause on time I took of my robe and, oops, I forgot to where shorts... I recall every punch, every hook, every jab, the worst way a guy can get rid of his flab... As you know my life wasn't fab... And though... And though I'd rather hear you cheer as I delve into Shakespeare "A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse" but I ain't had a winner in six months. And though I'm no Olivier, if it was him he would say that the thing ain't ring, the thing is the play. So give me a stage, where this bull here can rage, and though I can fight I'd much rather recite: That's Entertainment."

4a. "I got these small hands. I got a little girl's hands."

================

5. "Where's pancakes house?....WHERE'S pancakes house?....Look, I'm f***in' hungry now, ya know."

5a.
A. "You alright there...?"
B. "Oh, I just think I'm gonna barf... Well, that passed. Now I'm hungry again."

5b. "OK, so we got a trooper pulls someone over, we got a shooting, these folks drive by, there's a high-speed pursuit, ends here and then this execution-type deal."

Have fun!:D

Re: Movie lines

ARGHH Rgirl! I have no clue what the "I just called to say I love you" one was!

The Johnny Depp one....is that from "Ed Wood", as he is playing Ed wood directing "Plan 9 from outer space"? I can see him there, with all this crap cutting in on his scene, and someone asking him to do it over, and him saying "It was perfect"! Not sure tho....but boy, do I love Depp! :)

HMMMMMMM.....I'm still out of my league big time with the 50s movies. But here's an easy one...

"Oh yeah, you blend".... :)

Re: Movie lines

For the Johnny Depp line: "It was perfect." The movie and character are "Blow" (2001) and George Jung (a real person, who presently is serving a life term in a federal penitentiary for drug smuggling) who was the American megacocaine smuggler in the '80s. "If you did cocaine in the late '70s or early '80s there was an 85% chance it came from us" meaning Jung's group of smugglers, who were in league with Colombia's Pablo Escobar.

But "Ed Wood" was a good guess. Though I think Johnny as Eddy tended to shout "Great!" more than "Perfect!" though I could be wrong. But in "Blow" George Jung was always getting to a place with the drug smuggling and/or the woman he loved and as soon as he would say, "It was perfect," you knew he was going down again.

RE the lines with "I Just Called to Say I Love You" from the '90s movie, which actually was released in '00, I always think of when I think of "Pump Up the Volume":

This exchange is from "High Fidelity" (2000) which stars John Cusack as a former nightclub DJ who now runs "Championship Vinyl," which sells hard-to-find vinyl albums. The basic plot of the film concerns why Cusack's girlfriend Laura broke up with him and then, why she goes back to him. There is a great small part played by Tim Robbins as "Ian," Laura's new lover replete with ponytail and patchouli oil. Cusack is flanked by two "employees" who, as he says in the movie, "just showed up one day and now I can't get rid of them." One of these employees is "Barry," an aspiring singer played by Jack Black, whom you may know from the movie "Shallow Hal." Black is hilarious in this movie. The exchange is between a customer at "Championship Vinyl" and Jack Black's character "Barry."

Custormer: "Do you have 'I Just Called to Say I Love You'? It's for my daughter."
Barry/Jack Black: "No! Go away! Go back to the mall! Do you even know your daughter?! There is no way she likes that song! Oh, I'm sorry, is she in a coma?"

I forgot the "Go back to the mall!" part when I first wrote it. Sorry. I'm sure that would have been the key clue;) I know, it's an obscure choice but it is really a great movie. It was written by the same guy, Nick Hornby, who wrote "About a Boy," the '02 movie starring Hugh Grant. I find both movies to be very funny, real life stuff about what it takes to make the scary transition from perpetual adolescence into adulthood for men.

Re: Movie lines

Rgirl,
5a and 5b...Sheriff Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) "Fargo".

Kasey,
Lisa (Marisa Tomei sp.?) to Vinny (Joe Pesci) "My Cousin Vinny".

Here's two more:

"If my answers frighten you then you should cease asking scary questions."

""Principles only mean something if you stick by them when they are inconvenient."

Piel:

"Principles only mean something if you stick by them when they are inconvenient."
Spoken by Laine Hanson (Joan Allen) to President Jackson Evans (Jeff Bridges) in the 2000 film The Contender.

"Oh, same-old same-old. "

In what film are the above lines spoken and by what characters and who played them?

Oh and before I forget, sk8m8 Some Like it Hot is the correct answer and kwanfan your Pretty Woman answer is correct.

Re: Movie lines

Rgirl:

<em>1. "I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal."</em>
From the 2001: A Space Odyssey (196:cool: film. Line spoken by HAL 9000 (a play on IBM) the computer to Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea).

<em>4. "I can still hear those cheers, they still ring in my ears and for years they remain in my thoughts. 'Cause on time I took of my robe and, oops, I forgot to where shorts... 4a. "I got these small hands. I got a little girl's hands."</em>

The above are from the 1980 film Raging Bull and spoken by Robert De Niro playing the boxer, Jake La Mota.
(as an aside, this is not my favorite boxing film. Perhaps it's because of De Niro who is not one of my favorite actors. And yes, I know I'm in the minority.)

My turn; #1 1990's, #2 1950's and #3 1930's

1. No, no, that's not what I was thinking. What I was thinking was, what could've happened to this girl to make her feel she had no way out?

2. Dignity. Always, dignity.

3. Sawyer, you listen to me, and you listen hard. Two hundred people, two hundred jobs, two hundred thousand dollars, five weeks of grind and blood and sweat depend upon you. It's the lives of all these people who've worked with you. You've got to go on, and you've got to give and give and give. They've got to like you. Got to. Do you understand? You can't fall down. You can't because your future's in it, my future and everything all of us have is staked on you. All right, now I'm through, but you keep your feet on the ground and your head on those shoulders of yours and go out, and Sawyer, you're going out a youngster but you've got to come back a star!

Re: Movie lines

4dogknight - I absolutely lost it. I didn't think this would generate a response that much, and I am not a movie buff. I do know all the standards:

Make my day.
Is that pistol in your pocket or are you just glad to see me.
I never loved you, I only kissed you for the money.
Though I've battered you and flayed you.....
The murderer is in this room.
etc., etc.

Re: Movie lines

Okay, a couple of my favorites:
"I like the smell of napalm in the morning."

"At my signal, unleash hell."

"It's okay, I wouldn't remember me either." 42

From Rgirl on 6/7;

2. "What changed your mind? Was it my pies?"

All:
I won't be answering any further questions because I have a source on line to look up quotes and it wouldn't kosher for me to answer each and every quote question. I'll toss out some quotes but I won't be answering.

This is a great off season thread. Thanks Joe for starting it.

Re: Movie lines

There are a couple of sites and ways to look up movie quotes on the 'net. How about we try an honor system of not using the 'net databases until a quote has been up for at least three or four days without the correct answer, just to make it fun.

4dk: That's interesting about not liking "Raging Bull" or DeNiro. "Raging Bull" was up for Best Picture in 1980 but did not win. The consensus in retrospect is that it indeed was the best picture, in fact it is considered a classic (individual opinions not withstanding:D ). <strong>Question</strong> What movie did "Raging Bull" lose to for Best Picture in 1980?

BTW, I happened to see "42nd Street" early this morning (it was on at about 5am) and reading the "42nd Street" quote it occurred to me that there is a modern day movie character named Sawyer (the Ruby Keeler character) who is also picked out of the chorus to become the star. Anybody know what it is? There's a figure skating reference;)

Here's another Rgirl question:
6. "A strange man defecated on my sister."

Rgirl
Love the thread, Joe.

Re: Movie lines

From Rgirl's challenges:

<blockquote><strong><em>Quote:</em></strong><hr>3. "I mean don't just walk in. You move across the room. And you don't talk to her. You use your face. You use your body. You use everything. 3a. "So what Jefferson was saying was 'Hey! You know, we left this England place because it was bogus. So if we don't get some cool rules ourselves, pronto, we'll just be bogus too.'" [/quote]

#3 is from Fast Times at Ridgemont High when Dom(?) is talking to Rat (Mark Ratner) about picking up girls.

#3a is from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

My challenge:

"Compared to you, Mitch, most people have the IQ of a carrot."

"I'm old enough to be your mother - Almost......Besides, I have to go to the G.D. Senior Honors Banquet."

Re: Movie Lines

4dogknight:

Oh yea! I have not watched "All About Eve" for quite sometime! It's now available on DVD.

I also like:

"Frankly Scarlett, I don't give a d...."

and

"I won't think about it today, I'll think about it tomorrow"

and of course:

"Something tells me we're not in Kansas anymore."

Re: Movie Lines

LAD!!! Finally my fav movie...and another great one from 1939
Gone with the wind
1. Rhett as he leaves Scarlett
2. Scarlett's words 30 seconds later as she vows to get him back and return to Tara.

3. The Wizard of Oz

give me a minute...i'll think of a good one for you guys

Re: Movie lines

So close, Cynic. Of course the first answer is from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and is said by Mike Damone (played by the where-is-he now Robert Romanus) as he tells Mark Ratner (Rat) how to pick up girls.

But 3a. is from the same movie. The line is said by Jeff Spicoli/Sean Penn in one of his first film roles, when he is being tested on history by Mr. Hand. The "bogus" probably threw you off.

Remember when Spicoli/Penn sees the dead body during the field trip to the hospital and says, "Gnarly!"

I've got an idea for your "IQ of a carrot" line, but I'm tired and hungry. Next time:lol:

"What is this? A centre for ants?! How we can be expected to teach children to learn how to read if they can't even fit inside the building?"

And heres a couple of keys words from this movie

"MER-MAN"
"Orangefrappamochachino!"

Karabear,

As I recall, aren't all those lines or words from Zoolander?
That movie was so funny!
