Well I have to say, I'm a 32 year old male, and I'm probably the farthest thing from a "typical" figure skating fan. I'm the kind of fan who watches the Olympics and Worlds, but doesnt follow the sport closely outside of the few major events. Nationals was in my backyard, so I thought, "Hey, neat!! Opportunities like this don't come along too often, let's go and see what it's all about."
And I've gotta say, Thursday night was unbelievably exciting. I can't imagine what Saturday night is going to be like! I was getting butterflies today just thinking about it and normally, the only thing sports-related that has that effect on me are the NHL playoffs and World Series, lol.
I was struck by the lack of men in the audience in my peer group. I was on the lookout all night around the arena for other guys in the 18-34 range that were clearly not participants in the events this week. There werent many! I kept joking to my wife all night that I was the only male under the age of 50 there who wasn't skating. An exaggeration no doubt, but still, it struck me that this wonderful sport has some serious demographic issues right now. And that's really sad. I dont know what can be done to convince men in my peer group to get over the snicker-factor, but someone needs to come up with something. I'll do my part of course, because I've really had a good time this week and I'm gonna go out of my way to convince all my piggish male friends

that this is a sport
worth watching.
