Nam Nguyen

The point about changing your name, and or, the pronunciation of it when coming to an english speaking country is quite valid. My dad says his last name differently than his own brother... and both are totally different from the original "non anglo" pronunciation. You kind of just change it to make it easier for everyone in your new country because most Canadians could not say my last name correctly. When you use it the original way it is like a secret password only you and your ethnic community understand, lol.

I like that Nam says his name in an easy way so that I don't feel foolish trying to say it in its original way!!

Interesting that his dad is teaching kids to jump off ice...

My married name is also a butchered American version. The name is French, but nobody says it that way.

Kudos to Nam for speaking Vietnamese as well as he did during the interview, so proud of him. I have the same (married) last name but I don't really know how to say it correctly the American/English way either - I can say it in Vietnamese. The way "Ng" sounds correctly is very "foreign" to the English language then adding the punctuation (^~) makes it even more challenging.
I wish Nam the best in his new environment and will be anxious to see how he does in the coming season.

The interview was surpsingly frank, especially compared to what we see in most skating interviews. I was surprise he was so upfront on the financial investment. The interview was more than a year old, but I agree it shed a lot of light on the circumstances that could have lead to the coaching change.

Back to the topic. Sorry for the thread hijack, guys!

Thanks for the information. I just hope he doesn't push his son over the edge with all this emphasis on perfectionism. Frankly coaches should be allowed to do their jobs without parents interfering.

does anyone know anything about Nam? is he doing a summer competition? is he healthy? does he like calif? has he grown even more? just curious... so quiet in this thread....

All I know is that he was/is in Vietnam with his family. Seems like he's having an amazing time from the pictures I saw on Instagram :)

Oh, and his braces are off  seems like both he and Elena R. got their braces off recently... showing huge smiles!!! Now we're waiting on Satoko, lol.

I am really hoping for the best for Nam for the upcoming season. We enjoyed him so much at Skate America in 2014, and he showed so much promise when he won the bronze medal. He looked so sad after Worlds, and I felt so bad for him! I see that he is scheduled for Skate America again this year, so I look forward to cheering him on!

wishing good luck to mr spicy for skate america... i hope this season is one of redemption for you!!!!!

Yes! I wanna see spicy Nam again! He was full of joy of skating. Believe in yourself, Nam!:hap10:

Hooray for Nam! He looked so much better today. He did his FS run through with no jumps, but he had a lot more charisma and maturity than I think we've seen from him in the past. Even his body language was better and he seemed to be saying "I belong here!" instead of looking so dejected like he did in Boston. I am really cheering for him! I thought he showed so much promise at 2014 SA when he won the bronze medal. Go Nam!!!!

Happy for Nam. It seems like he has mastered the growth spurt and is starting fresh after that big blip last year. It was especially good to see his big smile after the dejection he showed last year. Onwards and upwards... but no more growing taller!!
