Nathan Chen

It seems a flu epidemic is going on in California area right now, and indeed, lots of skaters and fans had a hit during 2018 US national.

People are worried about Nathan BOI's health.

Only 20 some days left before the big game.

I hope Nathan BOI can take great care of that sexy body(flu shot etc.etc.etc. God Bless)!!! stay focused and close only to people who will unconditional love you.
The 2018 OG game will be the most pressure game for Nathan BOI more than anymore else, also more than himself can imagine.
So be PREPARED, grounded, train systematically, strategically and efficiently, consider ALL possible situations/scenarios (boots, blades, ice, ice rink shape etc. etc. etc.).
Also, I hope Nathan BOI can do full and complete SP/FS run-throughs in practices (including those precious choreo nuance), in my book that is the only way to be consistent and be confident in the real games. As for lay-out...
Remember, Nathan BOI may need to do 4 programs in the games (2 for team, 2 for individual).

A side note, I just realized that Vincent has the advance to train on high altitude at Colorado, which is really good for his stamina. Nathan BOI does not have this advantage. but I also heard that it is easier to do quad jumps in high altitude...

Anyways, fans always worry too much... Trust your training(good training), Nathan BOI will be good. Best luck!

EDIT: a couple of words about Yuzuru (arguably Nathan's biggest rival), I have a gut feeling that Yuzuru will come out gunblazing. also, since psychologically, Yuzuru will be the underdog due to injury, it may help with him mental strength (could check out his track record)

I'm glad Nathan is 18 since otherwise that would probably not be very approprite. But I totally get your sentiment!

This program is incredible!! I love the leap he took with the rock music and it TOTALLY worked. It's so classy yet totally spunky and hot, haha.

But it is still illegal for him to drink and go to nightclubs :p

I hope I did not offend anyone though... I guess I will be relatively quiet from now (finally out of the frenzy of US nationals) to OG (would be toooo nervous then)

I may post something about Nathan's FS and Nathan fans' kind words to him during this period of time.

NBC Olympics has put out a 2 part Netflix series profiling winter olympic athletes. Nathan is featured in "Go for the Gold."

https://www.netflix.com/title/80222681

There are also some other features on team usa:
Behind the scenes at a figure skating photoshoot.
Figure skaters describe the state of their feet
What do figure skaters carry in their bag?
What is their first Olympic memory?

They were also asked which beauty products they used, but there was no answer from Nathan (not surprisingly).

Cute TBT when Nathan was interviewed after the Novice SP in 2010.

Nathan will be featured in one of five NBC produced commercials to be aired during the Super Bowl. He'll be in very exclusive company!

You’ll see skier Mikaela Shiffrin (and a child actor playing her) in a paean to girl-power. You’ll see snowboarder Chloe Kim and her father in a passion play about sacrifice. You’ll see snowboarder Shaun White in a mind-bending parable about redemption. You’ll see figure skater Nathan Chen in a salute to the manly side of a sequined sport. And you’ll see skier Lindsey Vonn in a ligament-tearing hymn to toughness.

...You’ll see figure skater Nathan Chen in a salute to the manly side of a sequined sport.

...manly side...

:rolleye: Well, whatever draws butts to the seat cushions, I guess. Stay classy, NBC.

Though I guess if we're not expecting a costume change, it's more accurate than not - it just makes me twitch with the hyper-masculinity needed for the general public. Maybe they'll tune in for the Benjamin Clementine and stay for the ballet? :)

E: In either case, I live for Nathan promos! Also, fervently hoping he stays focused and doesn't let outside responsibilities encroach too much.

My thought is the spot probably focuses on the quads. Which NBC considers the "manly side of skating." :roll5:

They really hate those sequins, don’t they… :rolleye:

Why are men always so desperate to prove their masculinity in a sort of archaic, macho way… makes them look so desperate and insecure.

While every reasonable person knows that it’s way more „manly“ when a man has the kind of confidence, where he’s not afraid to come across as „feminine“, doesn’t worry about what others think and does NOT feel the need to prove anything…

In either case, I live for Nathan promos! Also, fervently hoping he stays focused and doesn't let outside responsibilities encroach too much.

Yeah, I do find it ironic, that the ones with the biggest pressure on them, get overwhelmed with so much promotional/media stuff, keeping them from focusing on their training, so that they can actually fulfill those expectations.

I'd rather they just film him while he's training and use that footage for whatever they need... win/win for both sides.
(I'd love some training footage )

Just watched the Netflix special "Go for Gold" featuring Nathan. Nathan's segment consists of NBC clips we've seen before (clips of him playing guitar and mini-interviews of Ashley and Mariah reminiscing about his bowl cut from and Ashley joking about how Nathan didn't speak to her until 2016 ). There is also a slew of spots of Ashley :(, as well as cute snippets of Adam, including one of him showing off his "secret talent." Adam actually demurs from showing off any vocal chops when prompted, which is funny since he has a respectable singing voice, and chooses to show off his dance moves instead.

Despite the smattering of other skating clips, though, Nathan is the one spotlighted in the Netflix special, so that's extra cool for him. The emphasis in this special is on his quads, and de-emphasizes Nathan's other admirable qualities, but that is unfortunately to be expected. Like penniavaswen, I cringed a little at the description of the upcoming Super Bowl ad pronouncing Nathan as "manly," in contrast to "sequins," and hope the media tries harder to come up with ways to promote Nathan without falling back on such lazy stereotypes about skating.

I'll be honest, I kind of hope that we get a super bejeweled costume change for the Team Event just to shut us all up. Then we'll be glad for the high-class athletic leisurewear.

@1111bm Nope, NBC is just playing with what they have, right now they have Nathan as their Ace, if they have "Sequins" as their biggest star, they will spin around. Actually, that is exactly what they are doing when it comes to Nathan's team mate.

Let's face it, in figure skating you need to brand yourself and the media are just playing to this angle. I mean, there are going to be a zillion stories on Adam being the "the first openly gay American athlete at the Winter Olympics," Bradie's "Cinderella story," and Mirai being the "comeback kid" so this is probably just a way to try to make Nathan stand out a little bit in the crowd. In the comments to Nathan's EX skate someone praises him for his "masculine artistry," and it doesn't seem to be a slam on other skaters. I've read similar comments from Japanese fans as well so it's not just an American point of view.

Judging by Nathan's latest IG post a lot of fans agree that his new FS costume makes him look quite manly!

I hope everyone goes out gunblazing :luv17: the most gunblazinger of all take the top spot and it will be the most awesome men's event and people will finally stop complaining. Big dreams I know.

He looked just as 'manly' with his costumes last year, which were a lot nicer than Vera Wang's, and they had color and lace and bling.

You're welcome to your opinion. I happen to think he looks nice in this costume.

I don't dislike his FS costume outside of the white zipper (scuba diving suits are great!). It's the SP one that makes me :slink: the most. Edit: And the preponderance of black across both programs.
