Nathan Chen

Olympic skaters tell us their spirit animal.

Photo with fan in British Columbia. I'm guessing this was taken during Skate Canada.

Nathan and other skaters in cool lighting.

Not directly related to Nathan, but had he gone to Worlds he would currently be on a flight to Japan with the others performing in SOI Japan.

SOI day 2 rehearsal photos

SOI Japan will hold a live press conference tomorrow on Youtube. There will be a 3 way discussion between Nathan, Shoma, and Yuma.

Olympic skaters asked what they would put on a billboard.

During the press conference Nathan revealed that his hip is doing better but will still need treatment after he's done with the SOI tour.

Here's part of Alysa's IG Live where Nathan is showing off his new camera.

Day 3 photos

Nathan has been honored with the Trailblazer Award by the Committee of 100 organization. He will accept the award at their conference in Washington DC on May 5, which is coincidentally his birthday!

First day of SOI is done. Nathan skated to Rocketman in the afternoon performance and a new EX program, Space Song by Beach House, in the evening. He also participated in several group numbers. No quads but did a few backflips.

Too many photos to list individually so here are some places where you browse them at your leisure:

I also heard that there was a short interview in the SOI program. According to those who read it Nathan says the reason he switched his Oly EX to Caravan was because the organizers wanted him to do something more upbeat, and the reason he wanted to attend Worlds was to see if it would help him decide whether or not he would like to continue competing.

I’m wondering if they only asked Nathan to change his gala program because he‘s so easygoing and versatile, or if other skaters were asked as well. Also, if Worlds was meant to be a deciding factor, I wonder what his plans are now? Of course, how well he recovers from his hip injury will be a factor, too.

My understanding is that they wanted a better balance between the slow, lyrical and fast, upbeat programs so it's possible they asked everyone. But it's also possible they knew he was using The Nights for EX earlier in the season so it would be easier for him to switch, even though he decided to use Caravan in the end.

the last time he recovered from a hip injury he added quad lutz and quad flip, maybe he'll add the quad axel or a quint when he decides to go back to competition...and maybe a college girlfriend.

That was his left hip last time. Is it his right hip (i.e. landing side) this time?

Was he supposed to do Mozart for the exhibition and for Worlds FS? I know it was rumored but don’t know if either was ever confirmed.

Nathan was interviewed during his visit to the Panasonic HQ. While there he also learned about the Panasonic Impulse American football team. I believe Yuki is there in the background in one of the slides.

Short interview with the Irvine Standard.

SOI Japan site has uploaded more photos from the show.

Mao wasn't able to make the event but she did send a message congratulating him and saying how impressed she was by his Olympic performance. He responded that she's always been an inspiration to him.

Poor Nathan has had to work the entire time while his friends have been sightseeing. The skaters are probably back to rehearsals tomorrow.
