Nathan Chen

Awesome-- he will have a ready made group of friends! I would've loved it if my college had had a skating club. Now Cal does, but it didn't exist back then.

Summary of the Japanese Article - A Young King Was Born

- "I've always wanted to become a world champion before I retire. Very happy I achieved my goal."
- "I came down with a flu after the Olympics. Went home and slept a whole week. Resumed training afterwards. I feel totally prepared when I come to Milan."
- "I felt much less pressure at Worlds, compared to the Olympics."
- Nathan wasn't sure if he should go for 6-quads. He wanted to try but didn't want to risk the title. But when others made mistakes, he felt he can afford to take the chance.
- Nathan was very humble about his 47 points lead. He said everybody was tired and Shoma was injured. YH, JH, PC weren't there.
- He was a little scared going into the Olympics. He was worried during practices and struggled with consistency. So he wasn't confident. He tried to hide in a small shell. After the terrible short program, he felt he had nothing to lose.
- The reporter said Mao cheered for Nathan's performance on IG. And the reporter said Mao had similar Olympics experience as Nathan. Nathan was very humble and grateful towards Mao. He realized all skaters, even the great ones made mistakes. Just as Alina did at this Worlds.
- Nathan now realized that the Olympics was just another competition.
- When asked if he was under a lot of pressure, Nathan said that YH must have endured more pressure. Nathan enjoyed the pressure from his countryman because it pushed him to work hard. He now learned to skate for himself, rather than being burdened by everyone else's expectation. He is alone on the ice after all.
- Nathan is 99% certain that he will keep competing. He wanted to experience more. He planed to discuss with his college of choice to find a way to balance. He will try to do both in the first year, and make adjustment for the next 3 years. He really wanted to balance both.
- It's too early to say if Beijing is his goal. He looks forward to the next season. New program. He looks forward to the grand prix. He needs to adjust to the new rules.
- About junior ladies quads, he was amazed that they did it earlier than him:-). He thought they were great.
- Off season, he wanted to take a break. He doesn't have desire for materialistic stuff, just wanted to hang out with family and friends. He wanted to go skiing with Romain and Mariah at Big Bear Resort. He didn't get to go this year. But wanted to try in the future.

Well, it will be only Nathan fans that are affiliated with Yale U.

Ehm I think it’s kinda difficult to both (1) enrol at Yale and (2) learn figure skating overnight since it seems like the members actually skate.

I actually meant Yale students. It won’t be a lot, but anyone that skated for a few years and quit will probably find some excuse to join.

Translating this article made me appreciate Nathan the person even more. For someone who accomplished so much early in life, he is down to earth and genuinely humble. He shows respect and compassion towards his rivals. He values family and friendship instead of the materialist stuff. It's just refreshing to see a well rounded young man like Nathan. I hope he can realize his full potential and reach all the goals he set for himself.

Thank you for translating :). Yes, I agree with you, he’s very humble.

Sometimes I do astrology readings of my favorites for fun just to get a sense of how they are as people before I know more about them and doing a reading on Nathan’s birth chart, it really fits him to a T which I’m glad because his chart shows many great qualities.

The part about Beijing is him being modest though lol, given his personality he’s absolutely going to be hungry for that gold, it’s in his nature. It’s the same quality that had him so mad at himself for making a mistake in his novice program (that he won by like 30 points anyways) that he re-did his entire program in the exhibition so that he did it perfectly. I predicted he’d try 6 quads at Worlds because he didn’t do it perfectly at Olympics and he ended up doing so. That quality jumps out in his chart so I fully expect him to have a very different experience in his next Olympics than this one. He’s gonna want to get it right ;)

I really hope his Olympics dream comes true in Beijing. It will be so special considering his mom is from Beijing.

nathan's on a gap year? didn't know that until I read the yale article

Yea, he skipped a grade, might actually be 2 grades because he turned 15 when he was a junior in HS so presumably he graduated at 16 but maybe the injury/rehab at the time prolonged it. But he skipped atleast one so he graduated earlier than usual and used that as time to prepare for Olympics before starting college.

Nathan said he skipped 8th grade

He mentioned before that he did some schoolwork during 4cc - so guessing he graduated HS in 2017

Thanks for the translation and sharing thoughts, indeed, it’s very precious for him to remain humble and kind with the potential and talents he possesses may he reach all of his goals.
