Nathan Chen

I'm still a little annoyed by the stereotype that the reporters had on Nathan, and asked those dumb questions in the summit. Just because you can land 5 different quads does not necessarily mean that you are just a jumper and you suck as artistry in default?! What a logic...
So what, the ISU may lower the quads jump values in the future, that Nathan will have a problem with that? And Nathan can not adapt to that?
Nathan is not Boyang (who indeed lacks some basic components training while grow up as a figure skater), just watch these programs Nathan did when he is 10 years old. how intricate and artistic it is (I mean really intricate performance using blade work and figure skating moves in the field, NOT just pretty poses) and what a musicality.

Real talent of figure skating are great in BOTH tech and artistry.

Agree with your post but more importantly OMG BB NATHAN SOOOO CUUUUTE thank you! :luv17:

indeed, very cuuuuuuuteeee:p and it is kinda crazy how many different, difficult entries and exists Nathan used for his jumps in those programs. and he tanos too.

I think a lot of Nathan's most interesting and innovative choreography came from Evgenia Chernyshova and Stephanie Grosscup. After he moved to Raf his programs became a bit more conventional.

Grosscup's last program for Nathan was his amazing Three Muskateers program in 2012-13. The moves were so complex and difficult I wonder if they contributed to his injuries.

Also, good hidden news in these interviews, it seems that Nathan may continue after this OG.

Barring injury, I really doubt Nathan will retire after the Olympics regardless of the result. USFS and his sponsors will NOT let him go without a fight. He has tremendous earnings potential and I can't see him throwing it all away just to go to school. And aside from financial considerations, he's talented enough to be one of the all time greats.

This may be true, but I really hope if he's to continue it is for his love of skating. In the interview with Shoma when asked if he will continue after 2018 he said it'll depend on the results at the Olympics. I really love Nathan but sometimes I wish he realized how much more he can still do with his skating, unrelated to winning competitions.

He just seems to like being mysterious and coy, which is why he won't reveal things like his music choices or jump layouts like everyone else does. (In fact I strongly suspect he personally asked that Instagram user to take down the videos of his Sun Valley rehearsal.) I'm sure USFS has heard about things he said about possibly retiring and spoken to him about it already.

We didn’t know about Hanyu’s program choices either until August shortly after Nathan’s Sun Valley SP, and people are still guessing the layout of Hanyu’s program. Some skaters don’t announce their programs at all but just skate to them, and the layouts can constantly change when there is need.

Ultimately Nathan will make whatever the life choice that suits him the best after Olympics. Who knows, he may want to have a normal college life, try something new after years of hard training and online schooling, or his love for skating prevails, and decides to skate competitively for a few more years. We'll just have to wait and see :)

You also have to read the comments under the videos. They are up to 7 years old. He already made people go crazy back then!! And they were already predicting him a bright future (with mentioning the 2018 Olympics) which turned into reality.
My favorite comment under this video:

Hey Nathan, if you're ever reading this comment, this is from Nam Nguyen and I just wanted to say that you are the most amazing skater I have ever seen and I wish you luck for this upcoming season and I look forward to competing against you in JGP:)

I'd say Nathan is on a whole different level as far as keeping his cards close to his chest. At Champs Camp Lynn Rutherford asked him about his music and he refused to tell her what they were. And according to SLC onsite reports he was the only skater to not do a practice run thru of his FS (he did 2 run thrus of his SP) so nobody knew what the music was until he actually competed it. As for layouts, I can't remember when a skater was so deliberately misleading as Nathan was when he said the 4Lo "wasn't a priority." From now on, lying about your planned layout is going to be called "pulling a Nathan."

Nathan is known for changing layouts in the mid of his programs without coach’s consent, as Raf said it before. This SLC 4Lo thing may just be another example of that :)

He was even practicing the 4Lo during the 6 minute warmup so it was 100% premeditated. Just accept that Nathan is a scamp and move on.

More Nathan in the media

Appearing in a TV news story about SLC 2030 Olympic bid

He'll be featured in next month's issue of the Japanese fashion magazine SPUR. My impression is that it's fairly unusual for a foreign athlete to be receiving this type of publicity. SPUR is targeted at Japanese women under 30, similar to Vogue.
