Nathan Chen

USFS Fanzone roundup.

"Of course, I didn't attempt all of the quads that I think I'm capable of doing," he quickly added. "I'm getting good training in now, but having the extra stress of school, I think it's the right move for me to take a little step back in terms of technical elements."

"(The program) is something I knew I was very confidently capable of doing, versus adding more quads," Chen said. "Yes, I can do it, but it takes away from my confidence a little. It takes away from my performance, which is really an important focus this year. That was really my thought process in doing what I did today and I'm glad it worked out the way it did."

Still thinking of ramen.

It's probably a stupid question, but it seems like he tapes his ankle around? are the pants too long or just not fitting?

lol I love the long crazy curls, but don't so much the gel he has to use to keep them under control when skating. He should just let them go wild. Wonder what his hair will look like next GP assignment. :eeking:

I think tape is for ankle support? Or to keep the skate strings out of the way. I've heard both.

Finally Nathan gives some glimpse of his busy Yale life in this most recent IFS magazine article. Kind of know what causes those stress zits all over the face: lots of lots of homework everyday and lack of sleep.

"I think just even handling school alone is a lot of work. Every night there are loads and loads of homework that you have to finish for the next day, which means that it kind of takes away from sleep. And then I come in to training the next day and think ‘I can’t do anything.’
“Those are definitely the times when I have to rearrange my time to find the time to skate, find the time to study, and find the time to sleep. It’s a balance, and I am still learning—there will definitely be harder times ahead, but there will also be times when it will be fun and great so that I can enjoy my college experience

Poor kid seemed to have a small cuts or something in his left hand. Hope it is not from falls on the ice.

I was a bit worried when I watched his Japan Open performance but he skated perfect and deserved to win! I'm so happy for him. Congrats Nathan :cheer:

Congrats to Nathan on his Gold Medal win! Beautifully skated and choreographed program!

Forgot something:

I also don't trust that he will only go for 3 quads... if he does, it'll be a very smart move and I'll applaud that, but... he's not been known to exercise restraint
(...)
I hope that he indeed does a less ambitious layout and that it goes well, and he doesn't get beaten by Zhou's planned 7 quad performance, teaching him that he doesn't always have to go all-out on technical difficulty!

  :2thumbs:
