Nathan Chen

Nathan’s mom is at Yale with him?

Yeah, the ‘coaching’ situation doesn’t seem ideal, but seems that it has been working ok so far.

Meh im not too worry about his mom, she work 2 jobs, cook clean, drive him around, she support her son, and clearly pushes him hard, and was willing to be a scapegoat for the short program. Rafael is like miles aways, it better to have someone then nobody around. Gooooo MOmmmy!

I am also in favor for his mom being there too. Without supervision, I was really worried about Nathan. The college experience Ian great but you can get very distracted and overloaded quickly. She knows how to handle a overloaded schedule. After all she was the one who helped him manage, hockey, piano, ballet, gymnasitics and figure skating simultaneously. She can help him stay focused, lower stress and keep him on the right path. She’s much better than nothing.

Fell asleep voting and playing the "I am not a robot" game last night. Just checked the past winners, Nathan has won 5 times already: 2016 December, 2017 January, October, December, and 2018 January. Guess the competition was not as fierce at those times. The archery boy really has lots of support.

I am so happy Nathan's mom is there right now! Nathan needs someone to give him feedback when he is fine tuning his technique. He needs someone to observe and tell him what she sees and I think his mom is great for that.

A Japanese fan from Yale writes that Nathan's mother is also at New Haven. She attends his practices.

Then Nathan's JP fanclub answers his mother is like a "second coach" to him? (sorry I use Google to translate )
I'm very sad because Nathan failed his Olympics SP with "precious" advices of his mother... :( :sad21:
A few skaters are successfully coached by their parents. but this is obviously not such case.
I just want him to go back to Raf ahsjasdfhdj :(

There is no report what so ever says that it is Nathan's mom suggested Nathan to do 4LZ+3T, 4F, 3A at OG individual SP (against whoever's opinion, or replaced whatever layout, yes the individual SP lay-out is different(more difficult) from team SP, but it is planned by the team and been known to the reporters in advance), as far as I know from Nathan's own interview, the short program lay-out is decided by the team and he changed his own mind half way through the SP program (on the fly) when he fell on the opening lutz and changed the planned 4F to a easier 4T(plus combo), which leads to even worse outcome unfortunately.

However NO fixed lay-out throughout the season is a decision decided by the team and approved and touted by Raf.

And indeed, Nathan's historical FS has the support from his mom (go all-out, instead of been conservative in that circumstances), which is been reported, which is the best decision ever, is what Nathan needed at that moment (perhaps in his life). and it is his Olympic moment.

I don't even know how this "Nathan's mom is the scapegoat for his 2018 OG SP failure" become a consensus.
Indeed "lost in translation".

Since, i am back at Nathan's FF right now:biggrin::biggrin:

might as well share this fan edit, it is an old one (made by his talented Chinese fan), don't know if it is been shared here already.

Always will love and support you Nathan, near or from afar. post or no post:biggrin: This love is as strong as first encounter

You can see there was someone sitting at the boards observing him on one of the fan videos.

I had noticed that person at the boards looking suspiciously like his mom...

I wonder if she was just visiting or if this is a regular or even longterm thing, at least for now?
I'm also curious how this came about, did Nathan ask for her assistance, or did she herself decide that he needs help?

If she's there supporting him on a more regular basis, that might have several benefits. She might be recording his training, driving him, organising meals and snacks throughout the day, maybe even taking care of his laundry and everyday stuff like that... all of this would be a great help to him I would think, since he would have more time for school, training, sleeping and recovery. But who knows, she probably just visited him.

That ‘storytime’ was barely readable - lol

Nathan’s mom might just be visiting? I’m sure he can benefit from her help even if it’s just for a short while.

Nathan was pretty sick before JO so she might have visited him at that time and decided to stay a bit longer.

Interesting stats of best sp, fs, jumps, spins etc. Nathan‘s stats don’t look that good except for Fs and triple axel ;). Lots of homework for Nathan before IdF.

Ahh, those fruit snacks mom provided when he was at Lakewood are really good.

And besides all important things frida80 and you mentioned, mom would help him to remember to break in his new boots and stuff like that, and provides some company when driving to Champions so Nathan won’t feel so lonely. I was wondering had mom be with him when he got sick, he probably won’t have that bad infection. He caught cold the second week of school, it has really been a long recovery time. He still coughed a lot at SkAm.

#teamnathansmom

She is surely a big help to Nathan. I am guessing she is there more to support him - rather than being a second coach.

Seems that they have moved past the Raf/Mom struggle - if that even ever existed.
