But wouldn't surprise me if certain deals require athletes to use their social media accounts to promote sponsors on certain occasions or with a certain frequency or whatever.

No doubt that is true. But I thought it was peculiar in this case because Nathan usually spreads out his Instagram "ads" over a period of time, like a few weeks. I think sponsors would prefer that over uploading a bunch of them all at once.

Oh see -- I should have asked you! Already got Michelins. Don't tell Nathan! :scard7:

No worries, just buy a box of cereal. (His corn flakes box should be debuting in a few weeks.)

... You know Nathan really is into Simone when he posts yet another photo of them together

What we do know is that Nathan himself did intend for this particular Instagram to be promotional. (Again, nothing wrong with that.)

It is one of the ones to which he attached the label of "Paid partnership with kello ..." -- with the hyperlink to https://www.instagram.com/kelloggsus/.
Nathan used the hashtag #ad (as he previously has done [and as others do] with promotional content).
Plus Nathan used the hashtag #GetsMeStarted, which is Kellogg's marketing slogan.

As I said before: At the same time that this photo was promotional -- showing Nathan and Simone swapping their Kellogg's boxes -- I think it also was adorable.
I sincerely believe that they truly had a blast together and that the camera captured smiles that were genuine (an especially big one from Nathan :), which was fun to see).

Another thing that I liked from this shoot: I am a short person, and it was cute to me that next to Simone, Nathan looked comparatively tall  :ghug:.

On a big-picture level:

I think it is a huge credit to Nathan  (also to Yuki Saegusa ) that he has five major sponsorships (Coca-Cola, Nike, Bridgestone, United, Kellogg's) -- which is a remarkable number for a U.S. skater from the men's discipline.

My hope  is that if all goes well, Nathan's visibility at the Olympics would have a ripple effect of increasing interest from major U.S. sponsors in the men's discipline as a whole.
In 2013-14, Max had Liberty Mutual, and Evan had a couple of biggies. This year, Jason has Deloitte. Hope that men besides Nathan will have even more during the next cycle.

On Dec 16 Nathan, along with a few other locally based skaters including Grant and Caroline, will headline the Holidays Around the World show in Goleta, CA (near Santa Barbara). Following the show there will also be a meet and greet. Last year's show featured Gracie, Karen, and Brendan Kerry among others.

Carnival On Ice is being rebroadcast on Japanese TV, and it's kind of interesting to see whose photos the TV station is using to promote the show.

Those tweets basically cover it. He also talks about Benjamin Clementine and how he used to be homeless, and what the song is about. He calls Nathan an "all rounder" type skater (as opposed to a "jumper," "artist," etc.) Lots of fans are happy because the JP media likes to go on and on about Nathan's jumps but ignore other parts of his skating.

I'm eager to know if Nathan will have different costumes at Skate America? I heard his mom is Michelle Kwan's fan so maybe one day Vera Wang will design his costumes?

I like the short sleeve black outfit that he wears for his short program. For the long program I'd like for him to use the red shirt that he used for his short at the beginning of the season. Not sure how I will like the new costumes hope they're still something streamlined to let his skating speak for itself. No need for garnishes.

I agree about the black rolled up sleeves for the short. I actually really want him to go minimalist in the FS as well. I watched some of his practice vids where he was just wearing a plain black training shirt and pants. The tighter fitting practice outfits really accentuate his lines and the beautiful nuanced body movement that were somewhat hidden by the looser blouse he wore for the FS. I think a minimalist costume will emphasize the purity of artistry and dance that is kind of the theme of his FS this year.

Too bad we are not getting to see new costumes yet, but I’m soooo excited about SA!!!

That's an awesome article. Have been eager to hear about Lori's thoughts on working with Nathan and the journey behind it all ever since he debuted that FS. This didn't disappoint!
