Nathan Chen

What mystery about his injury? I thought it had already been addressed before.

But the important thing is that he has learned to listen to his body, and make adjustments if needed.

I feel like there are so many more interesting questions that could have been asked other than about skating after the Pooh bears, Olympic disappointment/learning experience, and seemed that so many of the questions were in regards to others: Yuzu, Shoma/Eteri, Daisuke, Vincent, relationships with past US champions, Benoit Richaud, Rui Hachimura, Jeremy Lin.

Those questions, and DOI cast questions are complete waste of time. I am just glad he didn’t ask him Yale questions . He answered the popularity in Japan and US question really well. Phil was talking about lack of a dominant female skater was one of the causes of declining interest in FS, it is good to hear Nathan’s take. I want him to be that force he is talking about.

Oh the “mystery” was that lots of people, not necessarily fans think that attempting quad at the EX was what caused his hip injury. He clarified that in a Russian interview back in 2017, but it seemed that not many people read that Russian interview or forgot about the interview.

I wonder if Nathan will be invited to JO this year, or will Vincent? I wouldn't think they'd invite both else it would make the team too strong. Usually they invite Jeremy but he's doing Tessa and Scott's tour. They've already added Javi to the Europe team.

I would think Vincent will be invited, due to his new sponsor.

Not sure if that would preclude Nathan from being invited.

The interpreter lady seems really impressed by Nathan. She really enjoyed his Ikebo , but in the meantime she was “tortured” by how fast he talked ;). Nathan didn’t sound quite awake to me in the interview ;)

I was SO impressed with this translator. I wonder if she is the same one they used for Worlds. I could hardly keep up with Nathan myself and probably listened at least 5 times to transcribe his comments about Shoma and his new training situation. He may have had a little extra Red Bull or Starbucks to wake up! I don't think skaters like being asked about other skaters' training, but he handled it like a champ. I enjoyed listening to the interview.

Did they think the questions were inappropriate?

Kind of, like for instance a Japanese interviewer would never ask about personal finances. But also just that some of the questions seemed pointless and didn't really have much to do with Nathan.

Not a native speaker, but I usually have no problems understanding Nathan, since I speak just as fast, if not faster than him. I often don't even notice his above average speed of speech. :p

Although, concerning Vincent, did he really say "I'm proud of that kid"? Lol, Nathan sweetie, you're barely 1,5 years older than him.

The question about his finances was really unnecessary (read: stupid), because it didn't tell us anything about him as a person, his plans/goals or thoughts or anything concerning his skating career specifically. It's not something your average skating or Nathan fan would be that curious about, so it just came across kind of nosy.

Yeah, Nathan said “I’m proud of that kid” lol

I think he speaks really fast. And a few times in the interview he had to backtrack, so seems that at times his words come out faster than he can gather his thoughts.

He talks WAY too fast, and out of courtesy to the translator, it would be nice if he would slow down a little bit. I am a native speaker and have listened to him several times where I honestly can't tell what he's saying. In this case, I was trying to write down what he was saying, so it was extremely difficult...I haven't quite listened to the whole thing so look forward to hearing the rest of the interview. Other than the talking too fast, I think he does just great in his interviews. He comes across as humble and as a very good representative for Team USA.
