Nathan Chen

I just wanted to congratulate Nathan on his National Title, but specially on his 5-quad feat! Amazing! He is already taking the men's field by storm, I can't wait to see him compete against the other top skaters at 4 CC
Also, him trolling everyone at the Gala with that quad setup really made me laugh out loud

He is WILD. When I was watching him yesterday my brain exploded. He has everything to be the Champion. Stamina (WTH is his lungs' capacity?!), consistency, technique, presence. Even his 4S was beautiful. I can't wait to see him at Worlds. Also 5th #yoloquad gave me both: life and heart attack at the same time. So right now I have to sacrifice some innocent sheep to make sure he'll stay unharmed and survive this season without any major (and minor) injuries.

Congratulations US, you have finally found your WMD.

After such dry spell and shamen cries (mostly mine), it is like when it rains, it pours!

Truly the world championships will never be the same again! I expect big explosions... tears of 50 shades of cry with ridiculous amount celebrations one way or another coming worlds!!!

WC can you please come quickly?!!

Nathan is amazing and deserves the hype, but he's also human not a "quad machine" like Tara called him. I'd like for him to be known as a great skater first who can do multiple quads with ease.

Also, let's pray that Raf gets that PT team around him to keep him going thru the Olympics.

Nathan made it through the skate very well, and I think it was Raf I was more worried about! :laugh2: I had to keep looking at him - he was pacing back and forth like a cat and shaking up the bottle of water that he was holding. It must be SO nerve wracking for the coaches! I guess I would be a wreck too if my student had tech that was that insane! I lost track of how many quads he had done.

Nathan's victory even made the Japanese print media! Although, it sounds like the story makes a bigger deal about the quads than the victory itself.

The headline reads, "Chen Does 5 Quads".

Also an interesting article from Phil Hersch. Raf says he thinks everybody's going to be doing all the quads pretty soon, and that they're planning on upping things for next season.

Japanese media is pretty obsessed with quads. Nathan's national performance made quite some impact. Nathan made Yuzuru and Shoma's fans worried. He also made Boyang's fans worried (probably Patrick and Javier's fans too) .

How else are they trying to upp things? A 6th quad?

It's pretty funny how much hysteria there is. It's way too early to say what will happen over the next year but it'll be fun to watch. From the article it sounds like Raf expects all the top contenders to be killing themselves trying to keep up.

I think Nathan has it in him to add one more. 4F is his 2nd best quad but another 4Lz would cause the most panic among the other skaters/fans.

I try to have low expectation of him. It's not possible to always deliver when you plan so many quads. As long as he doesn't have major bombing or withdraw from competitions due to major injuries, I'm good. :)

I have a feeling that USFSA is starting to support Chinese American skaters (Nathan, Vincent and Karen all medaled at national) now to prepare them for the next Olympic cycle since the following Olympics will be held in China. I think Nathan, Vincent and Karen will have USFSA's support in the next olympics cycle if they continue to deliver.

Question: is there a video of Nathan's gala performance for 2017? Or is this a stupid question bc I'm ignorant of something...

It'll be broadcast on TV this Saturday so videos should be showing up on Youtube by Sunday.

I think Nathan is in a pretty good position right now because he probably doesn't have to learn any new jumps for the rest of his career. Simply maintaining his jump arsenal should be relatively easy on the body. Now he can shift his focus to raising his PCS and improving his fitness. Hopefully Raf can get USFSA to help get him a full time physical therapist. That's actually the norm with the big money pro sports where athletes have entire teams of doctors, trainers, and dieticians at their disposal 24/7.

You know you've made the big time when you've got rabid Yuzuru fans leaving haterade comments on your performance underneath your YouTube videos, lol. I can't wait to see what types of further improvements he makes components wise at 4CC.

You really think that if Chinese American skaters compete in China they will win more medals than American skaters of other ethnic backgrounds? Really?

I do think so. There is a saying, it takes the right time, the right place, and the right social connections for someone to succeed.

Most of the audience at the olympics will be casual fans. They are very patriotic and won't be very friendly to foreigners who are direct rivals of their own skaters. But they will be friendly to athletes who share the same ethnic background. (It's the same as American skaters will get more support from American fans.) Chinese american skaters will get more publicity and media coverage in China. In fact, they already did after Nathan and Karen won national. Most Chinese skating fans were not angry at Patrick beating Boyang by a fraction in both 4CC and CoC last year. If Patrick isn't Chinese, their reaction would've been different.

IMO, Chinese American skaters would have more "right" social connection than American skaters of other ethnic backgrounds in Beijing Olympics.

I see. Since this is Nathan's fan thread, out of respect to him, I'll just leave it there.

There are also more threads about Nathan recently.

I can certainly understand Beijing audiences cheering for Chinese American skaters but I can't believe USFSA is thinking about that at all. What I can easily imagine is Nathan's agent telling him it would be good for his career to do well at Beijing. With Olympic Gold he'd likely be able to headline sellout shows all over China and make millions in endorsements.

Here's an interesting fluff piece on Nathan that must have been put together in the past few days. He was interviewed between GPF and Nationals but it looks like the last footage is taken from Nationals. He seems so incredibly chill!
