Nathan Chen

Wish he'd made the podium, but he did amazing for his first worlds! Hopefully he has many years ahead of him :)

I figured he wouldn't do so well after his boot issues and the media hyping him up. I think this was one of the first times he felt a lot of pressure. Usually he's :/ when he takes the ice, but for the first time I saw him nervous before he began his SP. He still did well with all things considered, and at his first Worlds no less! But I do feel really bad for him and hope he takes this as motivation and improves on his PCS off season. And hopefully Marina will give him better programs. He isn't just a jumper, he is an artist. And I hope he proves everyone wrong next season. He has it in him to be the whole package.

So proud of Nathan! He had to skate in an impossible position and in those boots... Did anybody notice after the 4lz fall that he shook his foot like something had definitely happened to the boots? Amazing he was able to keep his composure as much as he did. He's a fighter and this was a super experience for him leading up to the Olympic year. Hopefully he sees it that way too. :)

I didn't watch live and don't want to find any video of his free program because feeling sad for him not on the podium.
But you are right Nathan is a fighter and I am proud of him too, and he helped to earn 3 spots for US for the Olympics.
I like Nathan's skating and to me he is also an artistically versatile skater besides his jumps, but I admit his long program
this year only showcases his technical abilities. He is smart and mature and will learn from this Worlds to know how to improve
his programs and pcs.

Eh, Nathan actually did ok all things considered. 290 is a VERY respectable score and would have easily made the podium last year; it's just that everyone else was unbelievable. Checking the ISU stats the only other men to have ever scored above 290 are the 5 men who finished above him today. I mean, it's shocking that Javi scored over 300 and still didn't medal.

I do think he was hampered by boot issues, though. The 4Lz attempt was his worst ever, and he didn't even bother trying it a second time, going for 4T instead.

My guess is that Nathan's going to use this as motivation to come back much stronger next year.

This article really goes into more detail about his boot issues. They basically began to realllllly break down during the warm-up. He sounds really disappointed - saying he's sorry about how he skated :( but I hope he realizes that despite everything, he did well!!

That's pretty amazing, but typical Nathan. Just like him making the podium at junior worlds with his hand in a cast.

I am sure everyone will remind him of what an amazing season he has had. What progress on those jumps, winning Nats and 4CC... his future is very bright and i"m sure next season he'll be a force to be reckoned with when he adds more this and that into his programs. I just wish he stays injury free because, man, some of those falls looked so painful...

I am not a fan of Nathan's (free) programs this season ut he has a lot to be proud of and a lot to take into next season. US champion, 4CC gold, shot up o be considered one of the top men in a very competitive feild. World's maybe wasn't his strongest performance but considering he's just 17 and it was his first time at senior worlds he should be proud. He had a lot of pressure on him going into this competition with all the hype and expectation, its not suurprising if that pressure got to him a little, with the added problem with his boots as well, his outcome was great. I hope next season he has a free program with a little bit more content around the jumps so if a jump does fail him, the program doesn't competely lose impact. He has a lot of potential, with some refinement he will definately be one of the greatest skaters out there.

I'm sure Nathan's disappointed but what a season he has had! A year ago I was nervous about whether he would be the same after surgery, I was doubtful he'd be ready to compete in the Grand Prix at all. I'm amazed at how he not only came back from injury and surgery but learned new quads and became one of the top men's skaters! I have a feeling this will just fuel his fire. I only worry about his health holding up. I too hope he has a stronger free program next year. I absolutely loved his short program, one of my favorite programs of this year.

..I just can't believe he has to skate after Hanyu AGAIN!

Well, it's a good experience, skating after the skate no one would want to follow. Good excercise for his nerves. Better happen now than in the oly.
Anyway, nathan got such a great debut season. He has a great future ahead of him!!

like chen, i have enough of figure skating right now, need a break from watching

this time i sorta get why some people comment about current judging system is failing, it discourages personality and includes too much choreography that doesn't make the program looks any better except for trained eyes

towards the end, the men's LP kinda all looks & feels the same to me

anyway, back on chen, i wouldn't worry chen's artistic side too much, people diss him mainly for two reasons

1. he didn't do a crowd-pleaser, like jin but that kind of performance i prefer chen not to do
2. fanboys attack, well, we all know where that's come from

For some reason I don't like the way Charlie White conducts an interview.

Back to Nathan.

1. He still needs to works on his 3A. I am afraid his 3A will be like Patrick Chan's - a kinda time bomb.

2. I think he is obviously nervous this time because his training hasn't been good due to the boots issue, not because of the pressure from the media.

3. 5 quads in LP are enough. He needs to add more transitions to increase his PCS. He is able to get Uno's PCS as long as he puts on enough effort.

You are right on all points. But I think Nathan appeared aiming for an all-quad long for the Olympics.

Well, then it's going to be an all or nothing program. If he doesn't skate it clean, he will be off the podium. I hope he and Raf will wake up after this worlds.

His right boot was a problem during the warmup. Raf adjusted it but then from what I have heard it split on the opening Lutz which is why Nathan changed his layout on the fly and took out the second Lutz, then added the second Toe. What he put out was pretty impressive, all things considered.

Nathan has so much to be proud of. Good showing for his first Worlds, especially considering the boot problems. I fully expect him to "come out swinging" next season in terms of better programs and improvement on his artistic side. He's such a hard worker. So get the boots in shape [[:luv17:]] and stay healthy! Hard to believe he's only 17. And many thx for getting back our 3 spots.

In the current field, whoever doesn't skate clean and his rival skates clean is at risk of being off podium, not just him. The field is getting deeper that there is almost no room for anyone to make any error. Even Patrick and Javier were off podium and they didn't skate too poorly. Even Yuzuru almost lost and he only made one mistake (not even a major mistake) in the entire competition.

Well, Yuzuru said he's planning to add 4Lz to his program next year so that's 5 quads + 2 3As for him. Nathan would want at least 6 quads + 1 3A to be competitive. It'll also be easier to increase his PCS if he can improve his strength and stamina so he'll have more energy for transitions.

then Nathan might indeed need to put seven quads in his LP given his low PCS. Anyway, whatever works for him.
