Nathan Chen

Yes, sheetz! I think he did well considering how tired he looked. I didn't realize he UR the 4t though (I saw that sheet with the protocols but they were a little hard to read.) I think he just needed a bit more energy today. Will they air Carnival on Ice or not?

I don't remember if they marked the 4T underrotated on the protocols. Just that it looked that way on the slow motion replay. Carnival On Ice is supposed to air in a couple of days.

He looked tired, but the height on his jumps looked better (the ones he landed successfully). I was really eager to see if he was able to keep the same level of choreographic details and timing to the music when more quads were added and I have to say I did think the program was presented better at US Classic and he took some details and transitions out of the program, like the arm moves so well timed to the music after the 2nd jump and repeating counters he did before the 3rd jump. I really hope he puts them back and hope this was just because he was tired and he was rushing through.

I thought he might have left out a few things due to the fall on the 4F, but the jump layout is also different from US Classic so he might have to rework the choreo a bit.

lutz/loop height is very efficient for Nathan. I have a gut feeling that, Team Nathan is trying to use the most efficient way to jump as many quads as possible. Which is also a SKILL.
I think performance wise, is still remarkable with more quads in. he might skipped or changed choreo a bit due to fall and jumping passes swap, but those changes are minor.
The key of this performance is everything nuanced to the music. Nathan is not as calm as first outing(understandable).but overall is still good.
I hope Team Nathan can stick to a final KILLer jumping pass layout and practice/perfect THE choreo around it (secretly ). Please donot mess around it too much.

Also, Nathan please do NOT skip that gentle waltz jump after your second opening quad. THAT move is Everything!. You have to promise your fans, you will nail it every time. which means you will HAVE to nail your second quad perfectly every time.

^ I hope so. Those nuances and flourishes in the first half of the program inbetween jumps were SO GOOD at US Classic when he was more calm and just trying to present the program.

Thanks, Spins all level4. When I watch stsq this time, I have a gut feeling it is better than USIC, but still level3...

Nathan letting out his frustrations after a flawed skate?

Ha, Nathan totally let an f-bomb fly. I hope he wasn't too hard on himself, it was only Japan Open! When does Carnival on Ice air? I'm excited to see Nemesis again. :)

Really like both of Nathan's new programs. Just two weeks til Rostelecom!

Something that has started to concern me a little bit is how Nathan keeps throwing in too many double toes into his program. Last year at 4CC, last month at the US Classic, and now at the Japan open, he had three double toes, thus wasting one jump. Thankfully, Zayak rules have changed, so he only loses one jump in point values, not entire combinations. When he's dealing with such tough competition, little things can make a difference (Javi in 4th place last Olympic because of Zayak rules). I hope someone reminds him to turn one of the double toes or into a double loop, or else really work on his 1/2 loop 3 Flip three jump combo. He has often put it into his planned program content info, but he has yet to do it in competition.

So how was the reception for Nathan at JO in general? I noticed they gave him an SO at the end of his FS despite the numerous mistakes, which is relatively rare :)
