Nathan Chen

Nathan's new exhibition is FANTASTIC. It was the highlight of what has been a crazy week at Nationals. I'm hoping that the exhibition comes across just as great when it's aired on T.V., because it was electric seeing it live. I think it will even satisfy the most fastidious Nathan fan :luv17:. Although, you should all be warned that it appeared as though Nathan was wearing his training gear (a Nike shirt and sweats) for the show and had no costume.
Why do I have a feeling this comment was targeted at me :o:

Oh weird, you are right - sheetz! It is there! That makes me hopeful that it's not gone. :) I wonder why he didn't do it in the long program.

From the Olympic send off event, Part 1

I had the dubious honor of being the unofficial English-speaking wrangler of several aggressive Japanese fans at the Olympic sendoff dinner, and ended up clarifying quite a few “lost in translation” moments for Nathan, Nathan’s family, and Adam. :palmf: I’m going to split up my observations into parts because the event was about 2 hours long, so sorry for the length and I’ll be posting the parts as I get them written up.

Part 1: Nathan’s family

Nathan’s 21 year old brother: Is in school, is studying Aerospace Engineering. Says [he and Nathan] don’t do anything to get their hairy curly, it just does that. Wears hip chunky black glasses. He looks nearly exactly the same as Nathan, perhaps even a touch younger. Laughed when he was asked about hockey, admits he eats McDonalds. He has never been to Korea, so it will be exciting.

Two sisters were there (I didn’t catch which of the siblings were which because I was being polite and the bolder just charged ahead, ahh!): They don’t have to do these kinds of events very often, very proud, etc. They knew he was something special, so this [the shindig, notoriety etc] is not that surprising. Aside: they are very pretty and I’m totally jealous of this family’s genes. I asked about the paper Nathan linked in his twitter, but didn’t pursue it further because I asked the wrong sister, doh.

Mom: As stated before, she told us to ask him whatever we want, assuming we can find him. She seemed very laid back about his whereabouts or what he does, which makes sense to me since his agent is on top of it and obviously he’s not a kid anymore. It looked like Mom was more the contact with the USFSA, and the other family members were not approached all that much by fans/press. The girls seemed a little bewildered when they were asked for selfies too.

Dad: I missed all the eavesdropping here. Also laid back.

At this point, none of the athletes had even arrived and Nathan’s agent was looking put upon by the Japanese fans.

Dear USFSA: The Japanese fans were very blunt that this was a very inexpensive opportunity to meet great skaters and that $100 was really not all that much considering how much the JSF charges for everything and they don’t even have these kinds of meet-and-greets at all. I think the USFSA could have milked a bit more money out of the event, since they had higher demand than supply of the tickets (i.e. space). ;)

I know US Nationals and even the Gala were broadcast live in Japan. Any idea how many came from Japan? Nathan had a few fans flying in. I'm not sure about other popular skaters like Jason or Adam.

I met two uber Adam fans who flew in specifically for him. Most were there for Nathan. I'd say about 15-20 were clearly from Japan. Considering that capacity for that room was probably 120-150 max, in which half the seats were reserved for Gold Level sponsors, they made a very large portion of the "fan" audience (as opposed to the donors and press).

Wow penniavaswen, this sounds like such a fun night! I'm so happy for you!!

I had no idea the Gala has been shown in Japan already. I wonder why there are no videos yet?

Part 2: Official events

When the Olympic nominees arrived, Adam gave a lovely speech (which I recorded on my potato of a camera :slink:), and the athletes were pulled for some official photos with the Gold Level USFSA sponsors.

Afterwards, I think it was supposed to be break-out sessions, but Nathan got about 4 feet before he was mobbed by more (and different) Japanese fans, all of whom wanted 1-3 things signed, a selfie, and were giving him a gift. There were at least 10 fans in the very first moment he was free. Poor guy crawled at about 1 foot every 5 minutes trying to get to his family at the back of the room. Other athletes started getting a queue, but the foreign fans had no such compunction, and I could observe how his agent would interrupt a fangirl moment to introduce various reporters.

Nathan is so ridiculously casual, and I don’t even think that he knows it or thinks about it. The other Olympic nominees were just dressed to the nines (or at least a button-down [looking at you, Vincent ;) ]) and Nathan is just wearing black pants/jeans and his cooldown jacket, lol. :palmf:

This was reflected when he talked to reporters: very casual, unfazed, but also keeps the habit of looking down while talking, which is why I think it’s an unaffected air. There was such a contrast between him and the other athletes/professional press, both of the latter seemed to be a lot more practiced at projecting their charisma. (Obv his is just natural!)
He and his family mostly stayed in a corner of the room, which made that area pretty congested, as opposed to Adam, the Shibs, H/B etc., all of whom were in the center of the area and looking very comfortable with the crowd. Even Vincent was more front-and-center!

The caterers kept filling up the serving area and I don't think any of the athletes ate until most of the official press were done with them after 11. They all looked kind of famished, and loaded up on the high proteins/veggies when I saw one of them manage to sneak away for a plate... leaving the carbs for us plebes!

End Part 2: Official shenanigans

Why do I have a feeling this comment was targeted at me :o:

Haha, I actually wasn't thinking of any particular fan when I wrote this comment :). I think the fans in this thread tend to be a touch nitpickier than fans of other skaters, likely because we have come to expect such great things from him.

Also, thanks sheetz, for correcting me on his gala attire. He was indeed wearing jeans, though they looked like sweats from where I was sitting. They're a little looser fitting than the style of jeans that other skaters are wearing, and also looked gray rather than blue, hence my assumption they were sweats.

Anyhow, I am now regretful that I had to leave San Jose before the send-off event, as I would have loved to meet his family and Japanese fans. Next time!

From the Olympic send off event, Part 3

Part 3: Mini-interview, or COSTUMES Q’S!
a.k.a. the part that most of us really seem to care about

I wandered a little bit away for a while, to greet Adam, Vincent, Mirai, the Shibs, and realized I was needed again for wrangling.

Since I’m a native English speaker, I tried to frame the burning question about his costumes in a positive manner (they were absolutely panned by the Japanese fans at my table), but nothing really prepares you for that moment when you really REALLY need to be a fan but also want to have dignity. I’m not sure I succeeded on either front tbh.

Question: We like that you were involved in the design of your new costumes - we were wondering what you were trying to achieve with the design of it - the black, the design elements.
Nathan: I told Vera what the story of the programs are, I told her the character and how I wanted to portray it. I also told her I wanted something contemporary, something modern, something different, and she gave me a whole bunch of different ideas, bunch of different sketches. Kinda made some mock costumes as we went into (long? Log? August?). We decided that was the cool fit for the situation. I kind of let her creative mind take over, you know.

Question: With respect to Mao’s Last Dancer, does this costume fit it? Or it’s kind of less contemporary… (-10 points for clarity)
Nathan [bless you, sweetie, for not putting up with any shade, as unintentional as it was]: Honestly, I would object to that and say it’s a little more contemporary. We tried at add some little things like the zipper.

Question: (inaudible, I think I was trying to say, “I mean the movie is less contemporary”)
Nathan: We wanted to take the movie and make a contemporary twist (inaudible) choreography with Lori. That was our initial idea and we tried to complement that with the costume.

Question: Last, would you say something to your Japanese fan base?
Nathan: I’m very happy with being able to make that US Olympic team. It’s a huge amount of responsibility for me. It’s been a dream come true, really, so I’m so excited to go to Pyeongchang.

He was so gracious, but I was too embarrassed to ask about the details of choreography that were changed/removed cause I felt like I had sounded negative enough, unintentionally or not. :(
(Soooo cringey to hear your own voice on a recording, so this took me a while to get this part up)

End Part 3. Part 4 will probably general impressions, atmosphere, things that were said re:Nathan at the table

@penniavanswen,
thank you so much,

Nathan indeed has his own idea now.
But I really don't like that shiny zipper thingy on his back. and that white strip on his SP chest. I mean the shiny part or the zipper part is not the most horrible.
but the fit of it, it seems not perfectly fitted. the zipper thingy protrudes out, not the most flattering of his chest and back at certain angles.

Maybe they could watch the videos of his new costumes and programs and make some changes/adjustment for better visual effect.

You know every thing is about visual.

I can appreciate the texture of his LP though, the mixed fabric of two different shades of black,

It reminds me of Chinese brush water and ink paintings. that is cohesive to its theme

Nathan's FS first part is "Brush Dance"

It also reminds me of Yuna's Homage to Korea black dress, that dress is also stylized towards Korean brush paintings. representing the mountains and waters in those kinda of painting (quite similar of Chines water ink paintings)
