Nathan Chen

We pretty much all agree the 6 quad LP was Nathan's decision.

And Raf was notified the morning of the competition. This info is from Nathan.

Also from Nathan: he talked to his mom about the plan, and he said she always supports him to push himself.

My biggest problem/concern is that he did not discuss this with Raf.
He would rather talk to his mom about this than his coach.

OK, I am from Taiwan. My last name is also Chen which is a main reason why I find such connection with Nathan.
I understand too well what family means for Chinese.
But this is dangerous.

I guess I am different. I rarely let my parents get involved in such issues.
For example, I study clarinet with several teachers over the past 20 years.
I always discuss issues related to my clarinet playing with my teacher, never with my parents.

Like I said previously, if I were Nathan's parent, I would have said to him, "I support you 100%, but you need to discuss this with Raf."
I honestly think him deciding to throw in the 6th quad without telling Raf is more of an exception than the norm. And considering the extraordinary circumstance he was in, I don't think there was a "good plan" either way so I don't really fault him for doing it this time. He literally had nothing to lose, so what if he threw in the 6th quad and fell? What would notifying Raf have done in this case? And because of his dire situation I don't feel like him making this move was that big deal this time. Also, yes, he did mention his talk with his mom, but it sounded more like a pep talk to cheer him up / boost his morale than a conversation about his jump plan. To me, there are just more worrying issues regarding him staying with Raf than this one-time incident.

and because of programs like this, delivered with equal authenticity as those programs you posted above.

I happen to be one of those fans who truly think he's unmatched in musicality or range, when he wants to be.

Uh, are we posting our favourite programs now? :luv17:

I looove these two:

The way he bends his whole body into each movement, slowing down or accelerating his movements...
I wish he would showcase this kind of abilities nowadays too...

Also, I agree about what you say about his range. There are several top skaters who cling to a certain style, that they are particularly good at, where they repeat a limited repertoire of choreographic moves in every program and you rarely see them deviate from that. Nathan on the other hand seems surprisingly versatile when it comes to musical style and choreography and it's not just the music itself, I also don't see him "recycling" choreographic details nearly as much as others.

That is not the impression I got from that interview. Nathan did mention about the 6 quad plan, and said his mom fully supported it because she always encourages him to push himself to his limit. From the context, it does sound like the specific plan was presented to his mom for approval.

Instead of saying that his mom is too involved in his skating, I think it is more that she failed to teach him the professional way to handle a situation like this.

I am old enough to be Nathan's father. I would support whatever decision he makes, but would also remind him to discuss any skating related issues with his coach. The last thing I wanted is to get in between my kid and the coach.

And I am not talking about either he landed 6 quads or fell all over the place. That is not the point.
I am talking about how he should interact with his coach. If his first resort is his family, then that is a huge problem no matter who the coach is.

In my eyes, and my psychologist friend's eyes, a ton of things went wrong.
As I said, my friend is very close to a Chinese family. And he has some very harsh things to say about the whole thing.
He keeps reminding what I was like when I was 18...
He said, 18 is an interesting age. That is when a teenager wants to be in charge of everything, but that is also when a person does not have the best judgement yet. Very dangerous age.

Some people think that Nathan fans are his fans because he is a quad machine, and don't care for the thing called artistry.

But I think exhibitions like these is the real reason we love Nathan. Not because of the quads!

I'm happy we'll have at least 4 more years of this <3

Yup. He has both the artistry, musicality and techniques, this why I’m a fan of his, of course I love the exhibitions he puts out, more alike himself. He is versatile like a sponge, and yes, no recycle.

Yeah, I can literally watch that Chopin program over and over (and I have been). As someone who grew up playing the piano, to me his sensitivity to this music is absolutely rare to see. In the slow 2nd movement his movement almost mimics the way a pianist would touch their fingers to the keys and in the upbeat 3rd movement he moves as if he were conducting the concerto. I want Nathan to be that skater again -- clearly it's in his blood and all he has to do is to go back to his roots.

I love lots of Nathan's programs when he is just a baby, those before 3A days. His transitions and his spins in those days are CRAZY!!!!
but my fav Nathan's program right now is last dancer, this is the one that I have watched the most, all competitions and fancams. watch over and over. especially his OG version, I always cry towards the end. the feeling that your breath has been taken away.
I rarely do this kinda thing to any other skaters.

EDIT: in my life of watching figure skating OG, I only cried twice while watching live, the first time is Yuna's 2014 Adios Nonino free, the second time is Nathan's 2018 Last Dancer free.

Yes, I too am obsessed with that program, I wish there was more available footage of it. :(

I also played the piano when I was younger (and incidentally, lots of Chopin ) and I had a wonderful teacher who put a lot of emphasis, not only on the right technique, but also on interpretation, so I know what you mean, and I also observe that kind of musicality in Nathan's movements, that you describe.

Also interesting, that this program wasn't choreographed by some renowned, big name choreographer...

the podcast interview is the best interview I heard from Nathan, feels he finally speak from his mind, not just the same old rehearsed stuff he has been talking about 1000 times already. Nathan sounded like he caught a cold.. I hope he is okay. he sill needs to skate in the gala.

He's obviously had a cold the whole time since he arrived in Korea ;) you could tell he was congested by the strained way he was trying to clear his throat/swallow, especially whenever he finished his programs, and the little coughs here and there.

I'm a little amused by how he gradually admits to the nerves he's experienced while competing at the olympics... first complete denial, then finally admitting to it, but still sounding a bit matter-of-fact about it, and now, when I listen to the podcast, he finally sounds genuine and emotional when he describes it, almost relieved that he's finally able to open up about this... I'm glad he's finally comfortable sharing this, instead of putting up a brave face (I mean, look where that got him...).

Speaking of favorite programs...

Talk about performance & musicality!

Wow, his style back then reminds me of a young Plushenko. The choreo is awesome, and he has such a natural interpretation.

Also, great videos with commentary and interview! That's the best commentary I heard so far. Though has anyone heard the B.ESP version?

I agree. I would also just like to point out that Raf was the one who told Nathan to do what he felt best and let Nathan take control. So it wasn't really Nathan not going to Raf to ask him about it especially since Raf was the one who said Nathan could do whatever he felt most comfortable doing. And in this case that was 6 quads because he needed that confidence and needed to just put it all out. And I think just like any teenager, you get the most support from your parents and family and so I think after his disappointing short skate he naturally went to his mom and they had a discussion as any upset teenager would with their mom. And he pitched the idea of doing six quads which she fully supported. I do think Nathan's mom is very involved but I don't think she's too involved to the point that we need to be concerned that they're not trusting Raf and his coaching techniques.

Thank you. Listened to both during workout, loved the excitement and second-to-second reporting and as always, Wylie made some good comments. After finishing the Podium podcast (so cool listening to him chat about NBA but Curry is the man sorry Nathan), I’m very happy he’s more open in addressing the pressure he avoided to recognize, glad he matured through the experience it didn’t went to waste or drown him.

Add on: Love the fuzzy warm affection Hoda and Savannah showed him, both at the event and on their show, like his thoughtful aunties haha <3

OMG, Nathan really caught a cold!!!!
How could he let that happen, how many times I have reminded him on this fan thread that Korea is very cold, be prepared....
Oh BOI.
Guess still gonna call you BOI for quite some time...
