Nathan Chen

I agree with you regarding the involvment of the family as a tricky material to be exposed in a public interview, from an Asian point of view. If you all remember Yuna-Borser split the last straw was Borser hinting at Yuna's mum involvment and influence and her calling it over in defense of her mum. I don't think that Rafael should have put that in the press or maybe he put that in the press because there are already voices of a split all around and he uses this as a defense. And all in all, I don't particularly appreciate Rafael approach nor his "now or never-big hardware approach" towards Nathan. Much prefer someone like Borser.
On the other hand, I truly hope in another SP from Shae (also JButtle would be interesting to see) and I truly crave to see him paired with Tom Dickson. If Nathan manages to improve in the PCS area, funny thing is that Dickson major dream is to find a good skater for a LP on Rites of Spring...I would have love Daisuke do this but I would not mind an improved Nathan at all, plus he should already be partly familiar with it.

I happen to think Rafael's interview is not him complaining but his journey to coach an once in a lifetime prodigy and just his
feelings overall, the appreciation, the pride, and the frustration.... I think it's not inappropriate for him to reveal what's on
his mind when being interviewed (he didn't initiate the interview himself) after the overwhelming Olympics.

And the "now or never-big hardware approach" towards Nathan was for the majestic Olympics. It's Nathan's lifetime dream and
that approach had been proved to be successful by Nathan's FS score. At the end of the interview, Rafael praised Aljona Savchenko's
achievements and longevity and the last things he said in the interview is "(Aljona) Set an example for people like Nathan. Being an
athlete is not a profession it's a philosophy". By saying that, I don't believe that Rafael is that kind of coaches that trade injuries for
quick success.

By the way, I also don't think Nathan is a brat or is arrogant just because he didn't always listen to his coach.

Speaking of costumes: they changed them one by one so quickly. I wonder if new costumes have been made right during the Olympics?
1. Nationals: SP "Throne"-like costume with white stripes, FS snaky costume with shiny zipper
2. Team Event: used his snaky FS costume for the SP, no zipper already.
3. Main Event: new costumes out of nowhere, though it definitely doesn't take much time to create those: b/w assimetrical one for SP, black + white collar for FS.

Seems that Vera made the last version in one night  BUT, logically, he skated in his old FS costume at the TE because maybe new costumes weren't yet ready. Maybe it even took ALL THAT time after NATIONALS to create, ahem, THIS.

If I were a journalist, I'd definitely ask Rafael about costumes: Whose decision it was to start working with Vera? How much they payed for it? Why did they change costumes for the Main Event, though there wasn't a big difference? How long did it take to create those for the Main Event?

about Nathan's motivation...
just one word, for someone has such innate musicality like Nathan, skating to the music is the best feeling ever.

@besti loop :laugh::biggrin:
the pants are the same one through out, they only changed the top

Nathan keeps wearing gloves with holes in it in practice (this OG included), the explanation for that is simply, they can still be used, so there is no reason to toss them away.

Also, why don't they hire Yuzuru's choreographer Jeffrey Buttle? Maybe it also takes good skating skills to get high PCs, but a choreographer famous for his gold programs would be useful!
I mean, "Nemesis" is choreographed by "Yuzuru's" Shae-Lynn and it's so cool, but his FS could be better (though I don't judge Nathan - he's beautiful in it, anyway). But such a gold choreographers combo would be a bomb! Maybe next season...

Yes, aaaand actually I love these pants so  I think they fit him very much, but of course pants are not necessary to mention 'cause they're black, and they've been black for 2 of his senior years... (Corsaire, Polovtsian, early Nemesis with the red shirt)
So when I wrote it I actually meant the top of his costumes  And my question wasn't about it

Also, I adore these gloves with holes, so cute :luv17:

Lori is renowned perhaps the most expensive choreographer as well. I think Team Nathan went straight for the best choreographers in the biz for this OG season. Shae is obvious, cause they wanted something cool to differentiate Nathan from others, Shae is the best choice.
For the long, you know, you always win the OG on the long. And people will always remember that winning long. That is why Nathan's historical long weights so much more. So I guess they went for Lori for a OG status long. The long is a masterpiece from Lori tbh, and it is the program that I personally watched the most out of all Nathan's program.

this is purely speculation: Nathan's mom perhaps is involved in choreographer choices and inviting Vera Wang for costumes.

I don't think Vera charges the skaters when she creates their costumes. She does it for the publicity that she gets back and I think she is the one that initiates the conversation. It's a long tradition for US Olympic hopefuls (one that I don't particularly care about and she fared better with the ladies than the men, IMO).

there are some great fancam of Nathan's FS (also SP:sad21:) out there on youtube, I am so glad that this OG is in South Korea, which means we got lots of great fancams.

Yeah, that's what I don't understand, no one has asked any questions related to his costumes!!
After all that Vera hype beforehand and now with those even newer costumes!
I really wanna know if this was actually planned all along or if they changed them because the initial ones weren't well received (and if so, who was the one asking for a change, Vera/her team or Nathan, his family...?).

whole post

I know, it's just that Rafael bluntness sometimes irks me a bit. Also, I hope he asked permission to Nathan before disclosing his health problems, current and previous; those are private informations and have nothing to do with Rafael and how he feels about the season. But I admit that with the exception of Nathan I cannot warm to any of Rafael's team so I tend to be critical of everything that come outside from it.
Nathan never seemed arrogant to me, quite the contrary.
