Nathan Chen

Never underestimate Nathan. During basketball games he deliberately makes mental notes of how top athletes warm up. He modeled his training around how top US gymnasts train. He's always taking in more information and always planning for the future. And he likes to keep things secret.

When did he learn about his FS? On the very day of his first competition. When did he confirm he was adding in a 4Lo? When he did it in conpetition. He make be an analytical skater, but that's what makes him so formidable.

Just curious, were these talked about in any articles? If so I'd love to read them. Thanks!

The basket ball reference was mentioned in an article after nationals. And he mentioned switching up his training to mirror ladies gymnastics in an old interview. I know it was mentioned during a competition during the 2015 JGP.

I've been following this kid for a long time. Sigh.

The reason why Vincent and Nathan don't seem close is because the kinda rivals. Nathan won Junior nationals in 2012. Then Vincent won it over him in 2013, while Nathan struggled with his Osgood Schlatter. Then Nathan won again in 2014. Vincent may not have the jumps this year, but he's going to train like crazy to get them. I know their on different level but Nathan never takes anything for granted.

Honestly I only considered Vincent as his rival in this WC, though I felt really sorry for how it turned out for Vincent. He will learn from the experience just like Nathan learned from his OG.

Yesterday press conference, he did addressed why he still went for 6 quads and I personally don’t mind since one trait I love about him as athlete is pushing himself and not settle for less.
I love this. This is the best way to act, really (remember Yuzuru this season). Think it's good that they insisted on doing 5 quads till the very end though they themselves knew Nathan was going to do 6 quads.
True. Think about what Nathan has said: Six quads is too risky. Not thinking about 4Lo. Now in PJ's interview he says he's not trained 4-4 combo, even though Max Aaron has claimed to see him practice them. His team clearly has a plan but they don't want to reveal it to the public.

I think in any sector be it business, universities or sports, there’s a level of confidentiality with its territory and righteously so to keep them as is. I doubt other skaters coaches aren’t implementing their own strategies.
Again, Olympics was a great lesson Nathan repeatedly acknowledged he has learned from and moved on, moved on doesn’t mean he’s forgotten or felt nonchalant about it. Moving on is so important and necessary whether reporters wish to or not, most top athletes address this the same way. I for one don’t doubt vicent wanted 6 quads since you can tell he had this exploding ambition in his demeanor since OG, in hindsight now, I’m feel the great experience he had at OG did him good 100%. Btw, Yuzuru had 4 seasons of experience before his first OG.

Thanks again for sharing. Can’t believe YouTube is such a pain.

Yaas that’s why I love him so, he’s a whole package! And Yaas too - he doesn’t take anything for granted, again 💕

@oatmella
“I love dance, but this is a SPORT. And ice dancing already exists.”
*highfive* I’m with you on this, with oh maybe two quads max it has been a flatline for years for me, warhorses with same old dance gestures/movements and yes if you don’t wish to be elevate the athlecism and just want to look pretty on the ice then there’s ice dancing. I know the other side will fume and throw anything to stick to the wall but oh well, it is a sport. TES is an objective part of this funky isu score system where CS is very subjective, depending on what the judges like (or what they understand). As for health of an athletes, I don’t believe isu cares much. However it does benefit the mid-20 age skaters so they can go a bit easy and have judges pile on their GOE.

@skatingMusic He wore this maybe because it kinda fits the song, Ts and jeans with indie rock, but I would’ve like a nicer/cooler Ts graphic ;)

Honestly I don't like to watch most male skaters and if programs with fake emotion, seizure like moments (oh so artistic!)

Lol...I am 100% with you! That's how I usually found men's figure skating boring till 2 months ago I discovered Nathan. However I was not attracted because of his jumps, but the way he moves on ice - it's feels natural and confident.

I read the English translation of the Raf interview on FSU. He seems to focus heavily on jumps. With the new rules looming, will he/team Nathan adapt well? I heard from un-validated sources that the BV of all hard jumps will be reduced under the new rule. Triples will be reduced by 0.1-0.5 points. Quads will be reduced by 0.8-2.5. The harder the jump, the higher the decline. 4Lutz will be reduced by 2.1, and 4A will be reduced by 2.5. And GoE will be -5/+5.

We won't know how real the information is until the new rule gets published. But it's directionally correct. I'm really not sure trying to be the first to land a 4A is the most efficient way to win going forward. Getting higher consistency, higher GoE, adding more connections, and getting better choreography - all seem more important in my humble opinion.

I don't see why Nathan wouldn't adapt well to any new rules. His style as a junior was much different than what it is now because he didn't have the big jumps. He'll adapt to whatever is thrown at him because he's so crazy talented.

So any thoughts on what Nathan's GP assignments will be next season?

The events are in this order:

Skate America
Skate Canada
Cup of China
NHK
Rostelecom
Internationaux de France
GPF (Vancouver)

My thoughts:
Presumably he gets SkAm. And he won't get Russia because Kolyada is #3 seed. US and JP feds will probably want to keep him away from NHK assuming Hanyu is there. (If Uno is there then Nathan can't be there since he is #2 seed.) That leaves Canada, China, and France. Out of those the best scheduling wise is probably China.
