Nathan Chen

Hey no one should complain Nathan skating slow in that FS after all the craziness ...

so you are saying, Nathan felt maybe the ice is cursed because all the other skaters fell, thus he decided to skate slow to test it out. Could be:biggrin:

I only took that to mean that Raf was laying the groundwork for a 4A on the slight chance that Nathan might one day develop the body to make it possible. According to Nathan that was what they did with his other quads; they developed his triples with the intent of eventually upgrading them to quads.

Regarding Nathan's SS. I'm sure everyone here agrees that should be his next area of focus. However, I'm not sure I agree that Raf intentionally ignores those aspects of his students. I would say he is just extremely practical; Adam and Ashley did not have the jumps to be competitive when they went to him and therefore that was his focus. The result? Ashley has a world silver medal and Adam has an Olympic team bronze (and become America's Sweetheart!). Nathan's team is aware of his shortcomings, as they are constantly getting feedback from numerous sources. Everyone on Nathan's team wants him to be the best, so I'm sure they have a step by step plan to make that a reality.
I sincerely hope so.

I really hope Canadian Nathan fan can download and share Nathan's CBC commentary from CBC website , it really worth listening to. I do not have VPN to do that myself..

Is there a link? Perhaps I can ask my friend in Canada to help.

^I disagree. Nathan has definitely improved his SS over time. Even if you look at video of him from last season he's better. And vastly better than 2 seasons ago. Is he where we'd like him be? Of course not.

Hey, maybe I'm wrong. But he's got 4 years until Beijing, and he already has all the quads. What else is he going to work on? Quad axel? That's just a fairy tale as far as I'm concerned. If he's going to improve GOEs on his jumps that's going to require better SS, IMO.

Raf sent him to Marina. And he sent him to Lori and Shae this season. Like I said, Nathan has all the quads already. What else he going to work on?

idk - I wouldn’t think they are going to stop pushing the tech: new combos or possible 4-4.

But I don't think you can separate tech advancement from skating skills. In order to get better flow on his jump exits he's going to have to improve his blade work.

Tom Dickson teaches in Colorado Springs, and some of the skaters he worked with for years, developing their artistic skills are Matt Savoie, Jeremy Abbott, Joshua, Yuna Kim ( he actually started working with her in Italy, when Carlo moved back some moons ago, and took Tom with) etc... Tom In the past, I don’t know now, had the skaters do figures, and from time to time he will bring Janet Lynn to work with them for hours and days at a time.... he is a great teacher.
As for RAF, I think he is doing a great job developing skaters. Someone mention that Adam’s skating is embarrassing slow. I want you guys to go back and watch Adam’s programs during the years he skated in Canada under Orser, and you will then realize how much faster he skates now. Many artistic skaters tend to skate slow. See Jason.
I also agree with RAF that his older students when they went to him, they were lucking fundamentals. No doubt about it. But look who’s students reprised America the bes

Thanks for sharing the info and your experience, it must be such wonderful feeling to see Adam reached where he’s at now. Though I’m not a long time avid follower I think base on the upbringing Nathan has displayed I don’t believe his parents are naive or will allow a self-centered, pompous who has minimal accountability to coach their son for this long. Raf isn’t perfect and like how he makes noises by the rink, I would scream at the screen at times when Nathan struggles. That said, I’m sure at times it’s a pain to coach Nathan too as he has his teen rebellion and other moments we don’t see. Maybe Raf is that “imperfectly shaped piece” that’s completes Nathan’s puzzle, other world renowned coaches may not be his best fit. I recalled Nathan visiting Shaelyn to fine-tune his choreography after COR and there may well be other times not publicly disclosed where he is given opportunities to work with specialists. At this point, Nathan isn’t helpless to move on with another coach and I doubt (if fact, Raf helped him out financially) at this point, he still feel indebted to him, there are ways to repay him outside of being coach by him. Nathan is super competitive, smart with immense talents, I don’t think he’ll jeopardize his career merely on that alone.
I just want to add one minor thing - can’t recall when but there was a few posts about hearsay of some CA skaters that (base on what my cousin who also trains, shared from past chitchat moments) were the not true. This is my opinion and all are basically opinions, I’ll leave this as is.

Thanks, I should really start learning Japanese, add onto my Duolingo since he’ll be going there often and always enjoy the warm posts from his fans.

Yes I do see his SS improved YOY and it may not be enough or even satisfying depends on who you ask. Like he said he has lots to improve and as someone who is in touch with his dance and music choices I have to believe he knows the SS is the next thing he needs to check off. I also am one who love to see what’s the five year plan they have.

Mic drop 😁

@hhh it could be Nathan has no better options at the moment, i personally really really hope Nathan could got more perspectives (he deserves it)...

Maybe maybe not, I respect your opinion. Thanks for replying.

Raf mentioned 4A, so I think that in itself tells us a lot 😢

It means he’s bluffing. Yuzuru says he wants to do a 4A, so Raf has to say something or be seen as conceding a challenge. Skaters constantly say they’re working on jumps that they have no intention of debuting. After Elizaveta landed her 3A, frank show video of Gracie working on her 3A on the harness. Don’t take it seriously. Nathan’s 3A won’t allow him to do a 4A.

Oh god he’s too endearingly sweet here.

Well...
It’s just...
I...

Nathan I’ll say it for you - I don’t know why I’m good, don’t blink when I skate. Haha
Webster needs a new vocab - Natdorable!

Someone, I think Max said he saw him trying it out. Maybe the nature of 4A is easier for Nathan than 3A? His 3A has improved since National.

I just checked the tour schedule, poor guy is going to be on the road like almost the entire two months?! Hope he absolutely take an vacation after aside from the sponsorship events. He needs it even at 18.

Someone, I think Max said he saw him trying it out. ...

Nathan has said that he has seen Max's attempt (with harness) at 4A.

(The context was that at a presser long ago, Nathan, Yuzuru, Shoma were asked a question about the possibility of 4A. When it was Nathan's turn to answer, he kinda laughed and made a self-deprecating reference to his own challenges with 3A -- before mentioning Max.)

AFAIK, Max never has said that he has seen Nathan trying 4A??? Is it possible that your recollection has it backwards as to who was speaking of whom?
