Nathan Chen

Thanks for the article. Can you translate the last question? I can't quite figure out what it says.

"-There is "control skates" in the U.S., too, but the specialists' opinions are not openly brought forward for discussion. The opinion on the skate is adressed only to the athletes and their coaches"

Okay, so in Russia there are "control skates" which take place in late August I guess, it's not a competition, athletes just skate their programs and show their state to the Federation. Everyone can see it and discuss it. The journalist here means that in the U.S. such "control skates" is out of public view and the results and opinions are only discussed between athletes and coaches.

Rafael answers that in the U.S. telling the bare truth is not in the habit (sadly). Means the U.S. Federation will just nod and say that everything was good at these "control performances", even if it was not. And in Russia they always tell tons of negative comments, observations etc (but that's good).

Hetty has raised great kids and deserves to be the happiest mom! After years of standing by Nathan, I honestly think it's more important for her to start enjoying her own life than witnessing Nathan's victory in person. The joy will not be discounted wherever she stands.

As someone who has been known to be extremely devoted to Nathan and his skating to the point of being present at almost all of his practices for the past 15 years (sometimes up to 8 hrs a day), and who has said on the record that she is going to see this through until March - and combined with Raf’s apparent smugness that the ‘advisors’ were gone (with the result being a win), I’m not sure if it’s very likely she didn’t show up at worlds so she could start enjoying her own life.

At least Nathan's mother has accountability.

I don't like what Raf said in the interview either. Nathan's family has dealt with Raf for so many years, they know well enough what kind of things he says and does. Bases on the fact that Nathan is communicating well with Raf during the competition, I believe they have reached consensus on what's the best for Nathan, at least temporarily. I feel it's the family decision to let Nathan complete his own journey to victory this time, to show their faith to him.

I don’t think we know enough about the situation to say what really happened. Raf giving Nathan an ultimatum after the Olympics could be just as likely as Nathan’s family wanting him to go compete on his own.
Nathan staying with Raf shouldn’t be equated to his family being completely fine with everything regarding Raf - including speaking negatively to the press. I’m sure they have their pride too. If indeed they decided to take a step back, then Raf should have had the graciousness to not rub past mistakes in their face yet again.

Yuzuru shake hands with his coach Brian Orser like partners and Yuzuru is still living with his mom. Just saying.

Yes no one knows enough about the situation regardless how long each has been following him to see what really happened and the reason his mom wasn’t there. To twist it one way or another is all personal assumptions.

@besti loop thanks for translating for us and explaining the process, it’s quite interesting to see the stark contrast between the two systems and I for one, would like to a good balance of both so they do receive some constructive feedback that may be irritating to others but very helpful to the skaters and serve as a guidance.
@ mamamiia yes, I know they even charge up to 2x more up in Connecticut for the novice class...

Considering she's been at most or all of Nathan's previous competitions for his 15 year skating career (according to SLC newspaper article), kinda sad if she wasn't present at Nathan's biggest win yet.
It sounds like Rafael may not have given Nathan much of a choice as he has spoken ill of the 'advisors' in regards to what happened at the Olympics, and says in this interview that at worlds, the main thing that made it easier to coach Nathan to a win in Milan was that the 'advisors' weren't there.
His mom in her latest interview said, Nathan is 18 yeats old, and time for him to fly on his own. It’s well known that moms and coaches don’t mix. So many stories to confirm that.

But you don’t know if his mom is involved in skating decisions. Right?

but you don't know whether or not Nathan's mom is involved in his skating decisions as well? As far as I know, Nathan's mother is mostly doing logistic work.

read the newest Raf Russian interview:
he said Nathan's 4S is 80% and all other jumps are 100%. According to Jackie's report, Nathan made various failed jump attempts on all his jumps (e.g. 4F, 4luz) in practices not just 4S, I bet if Nathan did step-out on some other jumps instead of 4S, he could say this other jump is 80% and else are 100%...

As for Nathan's OG SP lay-out, Nathan has been practicing 4Lz since the first day of OG practice, thus the opening 4LZ is planned, Nathan only changed his jump combo (4F-3T to 4T-3T) on the fly after first 4LZ fall, I think his fleet second of thinking is to change to an easier and more confident 4T jump to make sure he can tag on the -3T to make it a combo. Neither 4F-3T nor 4T-3T is planned (this jumping pass is suppose to be his solo jump). And Nathan apologized to Raf for this mistake. Yet, Raf himself also should take responsibility. it is his duty to communicate/explain well his plan(if he has a better one) with his student as for why it should work and what the advantage of this strategy. Yet he failed to do that and failed to recognize/admit his part of failure and blame the student and his family. For the most part, Nathan's OG failure is cost by Raf's endorsement of changing lay-outs (both SP and FS) constantly. and ofc the fault would never be on him according to Raf.

Well Raf specifically blamed Nathan for OG failure, while also taking credit for the win at worlds, from latest Russian interview:

Partnership with the athlete is much more difficult. And the blunder that happened to Chen at the Olympics, the consequence of such a relationship (Chen took 5th place in Pyeongchang - "Sport Day by Day") . He in fact spontaneously decided to do in the short program those elements that led to errors. I had a completely different plan, but Nathan insisted on his - and flew to the 17th place in the short program. I gave the opportunity to make a mistake at the main competition of the season, but now Chen listens carefully to my recommendations.

yes, and when Nathan did 6quads when he does not need to at worlds, Raf started to brag they stick to the planned lay-out blabla. Completely ignore and forget the fact that he is proud of constant lay-out change during this OG season.

Even if his mom didn't make coaching decisions I can see how it would cause problems by having her being too involved or just around in general. Too many cooks in the kitchen so to say and Nathan trying to please both sides. But Raf really shouldn't rub it in that he got his way. On the other hand, Nathan seems happy and the situation worked for whatever reason. I'm also not sure he would say Raf was like a second father to him and mentor, basically reiterating he's staying with him and trusts him as well, if there was a lot of bad blood between family and his coach. Of course, he could just be trying to make peace. It's hard to judge from the outside.

But right now I'll just trust in the situation and in Nathan's choice since there's no reason not to. Maybe in the future after listening to Raf like he wants him he won't get the results he wants and things will change. For now, it's just Raf being Raf and taking all credit and no blame as usual. In the future, Raf can't blame anyone but himself if Nathan's listening to him fully and the "advisers" aren't around.

Actually, there is another interview from Brian "Brian Orser: In my “kitchen” there will never be a room for a second cook" http://fs-gossips.com/brian-orser-in-my-kitchen-there-will-never-be-a-room-for-a-second-cook/

read it, BO's work with Tursynbaeva's components aspect of skating is amazing, I watched Elizabet's SS in person, hers is exactly what BO described, top notch SS, absolutely a fabulous job Team BO did on Elizabet's SS:bow: but somehow it is not reflected in PCS (well this is an another topic). And it does like BO said, SS components takes patience to train quote BO "all this is also a result of a long work, no less serious than jumping" Also quote Raf (from his previous russian interview) "program components are not actually an intelligence"

quote " I put all my knowledge in each of these athletes, but first of all I tried to keep them healthy people, that figure skating gave them pleasure. Only then a person can love training. In the same way, I consider my coaching responsibility all that happens to my athlete after he left sport. So that he does not leave the ice completely devastated, with the thought that all the invested efforts went to dust, if suddenly it was not possible to win this or that medal."
I really love this statement from BO, Just think about the amount of injuries Nathan already have, the increasing amount of quads Nathan was doing every year (literally one more quad each year). and the uncertainty from both Nathan and Nathan's mom they will take it day-by-day thinking that Nathan's body may not be able to hold-up by 2022. I really hope Nathan can have a healthy body when he leaves the ice, and knowing that his time spend on this ice is not just hardship but lots of pleasure with or without medals.

about one cook in the kitchen,
BO does not like parents dictate his coaching, like all coaches, but he is open to share his coaching with specialists and team members. We always saw Tracy Wilson. Davil Wilson etc. sitting on skaters' sides along with BO sometimes even skater's mom (Elizabet's mom). they donot mind to share the glory. whereas, it seems Raf really cares about the full ownership of the kiss&cry, e.g. in Mariah Bell's case, if she wants to train with Raf, she has to sever ties with his previous coach, and the notorious fight over Nathan with Zueva.

I think it's pretty obvious that Raf wanted that extra feather in his cap of having coached Nathan to yet another record - 6 clean quads in FS. There is clearly a pattern here:

2015 - first senior Nationals, 3 planned quads despite Nathan suffering from ongoing injury/growing pains. Nathan ended up attempting 1 quad unsuccessfully, was limping off the ice after FS
2016 Nationals - 6 quads across both programs, resulting in severe injury at the gala
2017 Nationals - Even with taking months off due to injury, 7 quads over 2 programs
2018 - Looks like they were going for 8 quads over 2 programs

I am so happy that Nathan won at worlds, the quads are a very exciting element and it's awesome that he is the best in the world at this - but as a fan who cares about Nathan's health as well, I'm not sure I can just blindly accept that Raf has a well-thought out 5 year plan for him that includes injury prevention, pacing, etc. There have been a lot of injuries since Nathan went to Raf, there was even a thread here from 2012 with people wondering what happened to Nathan - and someone posted they saw him at sectionals, clearly injured.

Raf is proud of Nathan competing injured, remember "you are a man now"..

Something worries me about Raf as Nathan's mentor/coach, what kinda figure skating ideology/philosophy he is instilling into Nathan.

Could compare to Team BO's school/philosophy of training as well as some others such as Patrick's, Stephen Lambiel's

That is why I really hope Nathan can have more perspectives in terms of figure skating, people and life.

If you're talking about Kori Ade my understanding is that it was Ade who objected to a joint coaching situation.

I bet if Nathan did step-out on some other jumps instead of 4S, he could say this other jump is 80% and else are 100%...

Nah, I don't think so, I was worried about his 4 Sal throughout the season, he obvsly had most of the problems with it.
I thought he's conquered it at Olys but oooops it happened at Worlds again :D
Also, I think Rafael says "the rest of the jumps are 100%" not icluding 4Lo? Cause like in the prev. interview he said he doesn't want to tell everyone what Nathan's training process is like at the moment, but saying that "all his jumps are 100%" would mean the 4Lo, too?? And it kinda reveals what should be kept hidden? So I hope Rafael didn't mean 4 Loop when he said that.

And I hope so much we'll see 4Lo next season! *__* he performed and landed it twice this season, idk why he left the idea of jumping it.
