Nathan Chen

Per Hersh article, it looks like French Grand Prix is the most suitable non-US event. Glad Nathan addressed the OG in a mature fashion kudos!

interesting article, but it sounds like he got super excited he was accepted, put it in his profile and didn't think anything further. Literally nothing is settled and he hasn't discussed anything with anyone. Ah, he's still young. And to think, we were analyzing so much.

Well, I'm just happy there's no thoughts of giving up skating. Or mostly no thoughts at least. Though rereading it it sounds like everything is really up in the air.

That might sound plausible if Brezina hadn't spilled the beans at Worlds.

He clearly knew of his acceptance well in advance of the official announcement, and I'm sure he would have told Raf before he told Brezina, of all people. I'm sure they've already had lengthy discussions about this, or else Nathan is an idiot and Raf isn't doing his job.

True. I forgot he did.

He still has to talk face to face with Raf about the whole thing. Regardless, he has a lot of planning and discussing to do with a lot of people. Sounds like nothing is settled at all.

And I think long distance coaching just doesn't sound workable at all.

I guess we'll have more information next month.

@oatmella

I hope so! Since it sounds like nobody knows what's going on here.

Sorry, Nathan(& his team)
We've known it since March 26 because of Brezina's interview.

I still don't think he has known for long and hasn't worked out how it's gong to work. USFS had no idea what was going on either.

And Raf seems like a big softy regarding Nathan.

You gotta read between the lines. He wants us to believe that he's making a rash decision to attend Yale without any thought of discussing it with his coach? Yeah right.

I suspect it's kind of a sensitive topic to discuss if Yale had to make special arrangements with him because it would appear they were giving him preferential treatment above the other students. Also there's probably a need for a secondary coach and they will have to conduct a search for one.

The interview is something Nathan is obligated to do. Base on his OG media experience I feel he won’t share much immediate details with the reporters, he still needs to have discussions with Yale and USFS, he definitely doesn’t want media to write headlines that will do a disfavor to the communication he’s forming with Yale. Good for him! I’m confident he and his squad will have a strong plan for him. I’m happy the USOC promise to pull out all resources to help him achieve greatness on and off the rink.

I feel like this interview may be full of non-truths, what a letdown lol

I have the same feeling reading it. But I feel relieved and am confident after reading these logistic details:

  • Skate America, in Everett, Washington, takes place during the Yale October recess.
  • The French Grand Prix event in Grenoble falls during the Thanksgiving recess.
  • The Grand Prix Final, in Vancouver, begins the day before Yale's pre-finals reading period starts.
  • The 2019 World Championships, in Japan, are during Yale's spring break.

Which means Nathan can do these major competitions without missing classes at Yale! He can have his programs done and do full-time training during the 4-month summer break from May-August in California or other places. He can do daily program run-throughs for 1-2 hours during the semesters. The Yale education not only can better him as a person but also could improve his skating.

Actually I suspect the school and competition scheduling agreement might be one of the reasons Nathan chooses Yale.

Okay, that does make sense. I was just slightly worried after reading the article. Thanks for talking me down. :drama:

I do think everyone will do a lot to help him. Even ole Phil figured out which competitions he could do already. I imagine others have also looked at the schedule as well.

I read it. and feel.... I don't kr.
One thing though, Nathan's mom (even name calling) is singled out (among family member) and is the "advisor" Raf is referring to (according to this article). And is confirmed that she is not there with Nathan at 2018 worlds.
However, what exactly they did (e.g. who made the call to change lay-out, who allowed the lay-out change strategy through-out the season etc.), whose fault it is, is still vague.
Nathan's answer is mature, did not blame either sides, take the blame on to himself. But do hinted that his team is "inexperienced" in terms of big event like OG. Also, seems Phill interviewed Raf as well not just Nathan.

other stuff, like you all pointed out, seems just intentionally kept secret, if not, then Nathan Boi you are really clueless:biggrin:

Maybe Nathan heard the Raf's Russian interviews through reading this forum:biggrin: whatever info we can get from this article seems already been discussed here.

the article did not really answer any burning questions.

So no Nathan in China. Well, I guess that’s better for my sleep schedule. But I was hoping for China. France’ s GP are ridiculous.

Phil didn't even ask the most obvious question--WHY did he choose Yale above all the other universities he applied to? Of course the answer to that might be the "sensitive" information I was referring to.

do you guys have confirmed info that Nathan will choose France as his other GP this coming season.

Some Chinese fans already did the calculation, in order to avoid conflict with other seeded skaters and back-to-back GPs. The only choice for Nathan regarding GPs is SA and TDF.
but is this info confirmed.

I’m not sure I would believe that he’s choosing Yale for scheduling reasons ? I guess it’s possible.
Regardless, I don’t think something like defending his world title next year in Japan against Hanyu (with possibly a 4A) with only minimal practice would be a great idea.
I’m in favor of Nathan choosing to do whatever he wants, but it will be very difficult to do it all - unless maybe he has some serious (and obviously undisclosed) accommodations from the school.
THeres no way that Yuzuru will have a 4A by worlds. None. All axles take years to master. Expect one in two seasons at best.

I thought he might just do a summer comp and Skate America, and then concentrate on school until Nationals.

Chinese fans dreamed Nathan to visit China so eagerly that they did the calculation immediately. it seems they will have to wait for another year.
but there is hope that Nathan may be able to do SOI tour in China, I heard SOI China is trying to invite Nathan over.
