Nathan Chen

I'd disagree on one point: His edging and overall movement improvements came with working with Shae-Lynn Bourne more than Marina Z. Shae is known for her deep amazing edges.
Shae most likely also helped him, as did Lori Nichol, who got him to train with a blade specialist while doing his chroeography and I agree there was further improvement. But to me the leap he made between the 15-16 and 16-17 seasons was the most noticeable.

I wonder who Nathan is going to for choreo this year ?

The speculation could result in another 20 pages of discussion lol
I'm DYING to know. Even though I don't think even he has an idea yet himself. Didn't Nathan mention wanting to skate to Mozart or liking Mozart at some point? I think he also said he liked the movie Amadeus. I'd be DEAD if he skated to Mozart, anything to Mozart really.

I 💕how frugal he is - same black pants forever, seems like he has only one pair of black jeans, only one white button-down, always wearing that grey zip-up sweatshirt and Nathan clearly loves a free t-shirt! He has a million pair of Nikes, but they are free.

Funny how he used to be known for his Adidas gear.

Sounds like he is doing very well financially.

I also adore him for being frugal. He is a diamond himself.
He even inspired me to cut down a little. Some smart financial institutes should sponsor him lol

Speaking of the 16-17 season, I was rewatching his FS debut at Golden West and I was amazed at how different it was from later variations that season.

He landed 4Lz, 4F, and 4T, but due to technical difficulties with the music he had to stop the program going into the 3A. However when he restarted he decided to either skip it or forgot to include it. I think he also missed a combo so only ended up attempting 10 jumps.

I like Nathan’s short programs the last two years. Marina and ShenLynn both did wonders. I might be in the minority here - Mao’s Last Dancer is my least favorite program out of Nathan. Not a fan of the music nor the choreography. I think Lori Nicole’s most creative years are behind her. Time to move on.

I think I have to disagree with you here with last dancer, I agree that Lori's work could be very uneven lately, there are indeed quite a few subpar work from Lori in recent years, but I do appreciate Lori's comment on Nathan's SS and Lori found a SS expert just for Nathan, her devotion and care for Nathan is obvious.
As for Last Dance, actually, I love the music (as a Chinese I can personally relate so much), the editing (very precious that Lori actually did a decent job here for Nathan in music editing), the concept and the choreo.

Otherwise, I would not write that music/choreo analysis article for Nathan before becoming his uber, that is my first encounter with Nathan, and I fell in love with him ever since. It was unexpected, but it is this program. Also, I will never forget watching Nathan's Last Dancer OG live, I was crying. his performance at OG is so touching, emotional and masterful, I downloaded all versions his OG FS. this FS is one of the very few figure skating performance I watched repeatedly.
on top of all these, the development of this free this season seems a bit biographic, like telling his own story, the ups and downs this season. it is Nathan’s historic and heroic redemption free and it is indeed the last dancer of the season, and he smiled finally in worlds choreo sequence spread eagle. just like the original concept of this program in the end it is happiness.

sometimes, me and other Nathan fans thought this free is somehow destined for this OG for Nathan.

Although, I know and a little sad that he cut some choreo for quads, but nonetheless, for this little fan here, this free is the beginning, the first love.

I wanted to do a comparison video of that too, but the music cuts off in the middle, so I'd have to do a lot of editing to sync it properly.

His hair is so cute here. He's in full training mode, so he let it grow out fully before cutting it for the season. We haven't see his Nathan Fro in a while.

oh speaking of which,
I just remembered I wanna share one thing and for that Japanese questionnaire I still cannot figure it out, but I will vote my fav senior program of Nathan is of course "Last Dancer". Japanese fanclub can count one vote from here:biggrin:
A lovely friend and Nathan fan made a video montage using Nathan's OG and WC free. but changed music to one Chinese classic "Butterfly Lovers" she edited the music and it seems Nathan's first coach Ms Grosscup loves Butterfly Lovers and Chinese dance/acrobatics.
it is really good. I think Nathan's Mom may really love it.

I cried a little, when watching this especially Nathan's facial expression in his OG performance, I watched is so many times, it etched into my heart.

EDIT: HERE it is 6 perfect clean quads.

Preferance for music is always personal and subjective, which is the beauty of it. We need to keep in mind that most judges and audiences are not Chinese. Given its political background, the Chinese judge might actually dislike it more than any other judges. Some of the choreography is just awkward. All in all, a poor choice for the Olympics year in my humble opinion.

Sounds like Nathan needs to do a Mozart program then😍. How about either piano concerto no.20 or no.22 from the movie?

I think Nathan mentioned that he was interested in doing a Mozart program for his FS for this past season. But Lori came up with MLD and he kinda had to be talked into it.

Someone said that Mozart is his favorite composer ?

Chopin is my eternal favorite - but Mozart would be great too

all these info is from me:biggrin: and yes and yes and yes

my honest opinion about this, nowadays, I think the judges are more caught up in doing the Math of figure skating and political games(looking at you that Chinese OG judge) than really gave a *** about appreciation of true figure skating artistry like the nuances of music choice etc.

Anyways, I am glad it existed, so that it is there for people in the future to appreciate. I am also glad that Nathan did not convert back to his last season program like so many other skaters this season, and stick to it to the end, although it is kinda demanding for him in the beginning.

I can also tell, Nathan has put lots of effort in this free to the extend that ignored his short a bit, Guilty:hopelessness:

No, I bought ticket much earlier when I heard of the show and I wasn't a fan yet. When I tried to get MG pass in March it's all sold out.:sad4:

so sad, :sad21: I was about to ask you if you can go to M&G, you may ask: does Nathan know GS FF and read it, we left many secret hidden msg in small fond here for him:biggrin: well, actually maybe just say Hi to Nathan on behave of GS FF here.
I hope you enjoy your time with Nathan, and do share when you come back from the show, any thing would be appreciated.:luv17:

20 pages? Add a 0:biggrin:

Last year it was massive secret. We found out things in small tidbits over several months. First a choreography. Then some instagram My story videos that faded after a day. Then three Sun Valley videos, which spread like wild fire and the original poster took down. And his FS was such a huge secret. He never performed until USIC, not even in an official practice.

I expect this year to be just as frustrating because Nathan loves to keep us in suspense.

aww, this version has more choreo than his later versions. Guess it is a habit to cut choreo for quads then. but Nathan is so cute in this with that afro all natural hair of his  and his black training garb ;)

yes Shae is known for deep edges, and the one thing I hope for Nathan in terms of SS is deeper edges.
but the specific choreo Shae has given to Nathan: Nemesis and No Good does not really use that much of deep edge work. it is more catering to Nathan's usual complex fast and sharp blade work that he is good at, but I do think Shae broadened Nathan's skating vocab a bit. just hoped that Nathan can stick to original choreo after he left all his choreographers.
I think Lori may helped also in developing his deep edge and just basic SS.

Shae most likely also helped him, as did Lori Nichol, who got him to train with a blade specialist while doing his chroeography and I agree there was further improvement. But to me the leap he made between the 15-16 and 16-17 seasons was the most noticeable.

I'm going to kindly continue to disagree on these points. As the subject at hand is one of my expertise and I have seen him train this material with the edge work changes in person.
